BANGKOK — For the first time, an experimental vaccine has prevented infection with the AIDS virus, a watershed event in the deadly epidemic and a surprising result. Recent failures led many scientists to think such a vaccine might never be possible.

The vaccine cut the risk of becoming infected with HIV by more than 31 percent in the world's largest AIDS vaccine trial of more than 16,000 volunteers in Thailand, researchers announced Thursday in Bangkok.

Even though the benefit is modest, "it's the first evidence that we could have a safe and effective preventive vaccine," Col. Jerome Kim said in a telephone interview. He helped lead the study for the U.S. Army, which sponsored it with the National

John O->Quarentine those who are infected and let them die out. The disease dies with them.

wolf78->That would mean forcing tests on 300.000.000 Americans, and even with PCR which is much more expensive than the standard ELISA test you'd have to hold them for a week or two just to be sure.

I never said it was an easy solution.

By the time HIV / AIDS was first described in scientific journals, it was way too late.

If we would have treated it like any other infectious disease in the seventies we'd not have an AIDs problem in this country today. Tuberculosis is still occurring in the third world. Don't see many cases inthe US.

I know a thoracic surgeon who got infected because he cut his hand on the bone of his patient while operating. Did he volunteer?

Of course not. I stated that some few did not volunteer. But most GRIDs cases volunteered to get the disease. (through their chosen behavior)

Chucky posted: I have found the 100% perfect AIDS vaccine! Don't sleep around like a dog!

To which I made my comment about ignorance on display...I'd like to amend that to stupidity on display!

As your post pointed out, sex isn't implicated in 100% of the cases.

Even then indiscriminate sex and promiscuity are not always implicated...sometimes innocent people get infected.

So since you have inadvertently used a credible source to back up my assertion, and your response to me:

You think it’s ignorant to not sleep around?
You are the definition of self-proclaimed ignorance.

showed that not only did you not read with comprehension but that you had to take up straw man arguments, I want to thank you for supporting my position and destroying yours.

I never said or implied that indiscriminate sex was a good thing, only that it was ignorant stupid to proclaim that refraining from promiscuity was a 100% perfect prophylaxis.

Obviously I need to go watch the Sesame Street where Big Bird tells us that it’s OK to have AIDS & to give them hugs & kisses.

I respect most everyone on here apart from a few obvious liberals. I’m not going to call anyone names based on an Internet post or two. AIDS is a sin-borne disease, and I believe that with every inch of my glorious conservative body.

If people want to throw names around for that, they might want to consider loosening the grip on that trigger.

it's the first evidence that we could have a safe and effective preventive vaccine

Most of us found a safe and effective preventive vaccine years ago. Here it is:

Don't share needles with junkies who shoot heroin
Don't have unprotected sex with a guy you just met at a bathhouse
Be in a monogamous, committed relationship with someone who hasn't done any of the above

It's amazing how few heterosexual, monogamous, non drug users contract the aids virus.

For the record; I understand that there are unfortunate instances where people are contaminated through no fault of their own, such as children who are born to IV drug users and those (such as Arhtur Ashe) who contracted the virus through a blood transfusion. These are the people who should be first in line for any vaccine.

Chuck, you are a moron. You can believe all you want anything you want but that does not make it true or even factual.

I personally knew two people who contracted HIV thru no wrong doing on their own.

So when you or anyone else says that it is all about sleeping around or sinful conduct on the part of the one who contracts the disease, you are lying because you know better or should know better.

There are still cases from medical contamination and cases where unsuspecting spouses contract the disease.

I’m sure you FEEL justified in condemning everyone with HIV as sinners and I’m sure Jesus is very proud of your condemnation and self justification.

Get your facts straight.

Yeah, like I said, obviously I need to go watch the Sesame Street where Big Bird tells us that it’s OK to have AIDS & to give them hugs & kisses.

Just keep on throwing the names around. It's really helping your case.

You know two people who caught aids through no fault of their own? Wow. You should play the lottery. You'd have a better chance of winning $100,000,000.

Liberals focus on single heartstring cases. "We should all get Obamacare because of this one guy blah blah". They can take their "this one guy" arguments and shove them. They never tell you the whole story, and only ever focus on the parts that support their argument.

And they always come at you with such nastiness, namecalling, and vitriol, as if by disagreeing with them, by having an opinion that differs from theirs, you are inherantly evil. Damn them. Damn their pathetic ways.

Of course there are opportunities for non-sinful behavior to bring on AIDS, but those are so few that your argument doesn’t hold water. You seem quite happy that a vaccine that has only a 31% effectiveness may become available. You deride someone for saying that staying away from sinful ways virtually guarantees you won’t get AIDS. This is entirely true. When less than 1/3 of one percent of people in the US have AIDS and of that 1/3 of one percent, only 2.18 percent of those got AIDS from a transfusion or some other “non-sinful” way.

For being named “Eagle Eye,” you are completely blind.

How dare you label yourself with the term "Conservative" when you are a blatant liar?

You seem quite happy that a vaccine that has only a 31% effectiveness may become available. Provide my quote that states that or shut up.

You deride someone for saying that staying away from sinful ways virtually guarantees you won’t get AIDS. This is entirely true.

First off, provide my quote where I deride someone for advocating abstaining from 'sinful' ways...and again, put up or shut up.

"Entirely true" means without exception. Perhaps the cases I personally know are the only exceptions in the world, and if they are then your statement of "entirely true" is false.

Your problem is that you cannot disprove my statements and even supplied third party verification of them while at the same time disproving your claims and you don't like that so you have to resort to lying and straw man arguments to give yourself something to say.

If dumazz chucky would have said 'most' I'd been ok with that because it would be true. I have a problem with people posting false statements as if they were true or factual.

I do not intend to entertain any more discussion on this thread. When I meet someone like you that blatantly lies I have no more time or interest in what they have to say but I don't mind at all exposing you for the liar you are.

This is going to be fun. I get to pick off your stupid words.

Yes, I said that “you seem quite happy” with the vaccine. After all, you didn't post one negative comment against it in a thread devoted to that very vaccine. However, you do deride someone who says they “have found the 100% perfect AIDS vaccine,” which is to not sleep around. His position may be effective to prevent up to 72% of AIDS cases. If he had added his “vaccine” also required not “doing illegal drugs,” then his vaccine would have been 97.82% effective. Amazingly, none of this would have required another study, nor additional funding from the government.

You said in post #87:

“So when you or anyone else says that it is all about sleeping around or sinful conduct on the part of the one who contracts the disease, you are lying because you know better or should know better.”

Aren't you the one bringing up the word “sinful?” Frankly, staying away from sinful ways would have prevented over 98% of all current AIDS cases. Why aren't you arguing against the vaccine in this thread, for being only 31% effective? You seem highly inconsistent here.

My words were: “You deride someone for saying that staying away from sinful ways virtually guarantees you won’t get AIDS. This is entirely true.” You said that “Entirely true” means without exception. Perhaps the cases I personally know are the only exceptions in the world, and if they are then your statement of ‘entirely true’ is false.” This really shows ignorance on your part.

I said that staying away from sinful ways “virtually guarantees you won't get AIDS.” Independent statistics show that to be completely true (98% effectiveness is a “virtual” guarantee against AIDS). This is what I said was “entirely true”. Again, my words are perfectly stated and provably correct. Open your eyes and your brain.

Please don't entertain any more discussion on this thread. your ignorance, unsupported allegations, and bizarre attitude are really not needed.

The results: New infections occurred in 51 of the 8,197 given vaccine and in 74 of the 8,198 who received dummy shots. That worked out to a 31 percent lower risk of infection for the vaccine group.

These numbers don't seem very convincing to me, in a group just going about their usual "average-risk" behavior. There are so many variables. It's too loose. The difference could be due to so many other things.
