AP ^

YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. – As Gene Butman Ford opened its doors Saturday, salesmen outnumbered the shoppers looking at a depleted stock of cars and trucks, and it didn't appear that many customers were ready to buy.

Like many dealers across the country, the dealership in Ypsilanti Township, Mich., west of Detroit, is suffering from a Cash for Clunkers hangover, and Sales Manager Paul Grahl isn't sure when it will end.

I’ve been saying for a month now.

Everyone that was buying a new car in these next 12 months, did it last month. There will be an even deeper void in new auto sales for months to come. Why should anyone buy a new car now; just wait for the next C4C program!

I would not buy any of these new clunkers with crazy prices. Union made junk.

No kidding Glenn. I predicted his and I’m sure a lot of other folks did the same thing.

And guess which company will take it in the shorts the most? GM? Did it’s sales benefit much during the Cash for Clunkers program? No, the foreign auto makers did. Now GM will suffer the dead zone, all the sales already having been made from foreign auto dealers.

Obama, his team, and the Democrats are such a sages.

What?

It wasn't a solid and sustaining economic fix????

Imagine that!

The dealers who have gone broke awaiting government "clunker" payback don't have to worry about it for they have are out of business financially.

I am ready to purchase a 2010 Ford Taurus. I looked at a couple of those cars 10 days ago. However, the local dealers do not have more than one or two of them on their lots. And one dealer is charging a $2,500. premium on top of list price on a Taurus "SHO" model!

What idiots.

The people that were ready to buy already took advantage of the cars for clunkers scam.

Few people will be buying new cars now.

The same cars are still on their lots from 10 days ago, and have not been sold.

True that, George. It’ll cost less to maintain the average car until the next “freebie” giveaway program than to buy now and have a monthly payment.

My wife does foreclosures and we’re in agreement that the car repo market will have a sharp upswing beginning in a few months like the home foreclosure market has been doing for a few years. Plenty of families will end up getting the double-whammy, too.

Look at the bright side, GM employee's can anticipate government sanctioned health care paid for by taxpayers.

He!! of a political payback to the unions, eh?

I will NEVER EVER buy a vehicle manufactured in Detroit ever again!

Toyota here I come!

And there will be a flood of low-mileage used (repo) cars hitting the market in the next 6 months as well - when folks who traded their perfectly functional older vehicle in for a brand new one, and get reminded of why they hadn’t bought a new car...

It’s going to be a repo-man friendly market!

And perfectly good vehicles rendered useless via "engine seizing compound" just because of a warmed over Jimma' Carter liberal focusing on political paybacks instead of leading a nation!

Why Toyota? Toyota quality has been suffering. If you are going to go foreign, at least buy a quality Hyundai.

As for American cars, the Fords have been increasing in quality as Toyota has been slipping.

The new Taurus is really nice.

[Never saw that coming.]

I’m flumoxed and gobsmacked. Never in a million years would I suspect that running a subsidized firesale would move future sales into the present AND depress future sales when prices rose.

Or, as some videos early in the program's period, dealers who would drain the oil, then run the engine until it seized...

I made myself quite sick driving through several dealerships towards the end of the program. Not only were their some true "clunkers", there were vehicles that I would be more than proud to own/drive. Among them were vehicles that would likely blue-book at about what the government rebate was... or slightly more. But, as a dealership would never give you $4500 for a vehicle in trade that blue books for that figure, why not trade it in (even though you could sell it to somebody who needs a vehicle for that kind of cash).

I have been in the market for a pickup truck - something older, maybe 4 wheel drive, and I'm not too terribly hung up on the make. Just want a solid truck. I saw many on dealership lots.... and all with "Not For Sale" and "C4C" on the windows... Rather frustrating.

And those that didn't are going to hold off and wait for Cash for Clunkers 2.

Because UNION = political favor and I refuse to give favor to a political entity such as the dimocrat party.

Until that changes, and the government no longer owns an industry.....no way Hose'!
