"Obama delivered the finest speech of his presidency," Brooks begins. "Best of all for those who admire the political craft," he continues, "was the speech's seductive nature and careful ambiguity. Obama threw out enough rhetorical chum to keep the liberals happy, yet he subtly staked out ground in the center on nearly every substantive issue in order to win over the moderates needed to get anything passed."
In other words, Obama's speech was bookended by lies and phony concern for the uninsured and the elderly, while the substance was thoroughly right-wing.
"First, Obama rested the credibility of his presidency on what you might call the Dime Standard. He was flexible about many things, but not this: 'I will not sign a plan that adds one dime to our deficits—either now or in the future. Period.'"
As Brooks correctly concludes, this means that the more right-wing bill being worked out in the Senate will be the basis of negotiations, since the House bill does not satisfy the criterion of deficit neutrality.
More significantly, Obama's speech sets in motion a process that will lead to a raft of right-wing amendments and deeper cost-cutting measures...Thus, more people will be left without any form of insurance and those compelled by law to buy insurance from private companies will have to pay more out-of-pocket.

Turns out, many Socialist also believe that Obama is a liar.
I am starting to believe that Obama isn't a socialist; but he is a puppet. What is the REAL political stance of those pulling his strings?
There is a connection between the Dems and Republicans...as so many people say...'same bird, different wings.'

I know our government leaders are Opportunist and practice Opportunism; but there has to be some Socioeconomic term that describes our government that is more accurate than "Socialist."

Hmm...an empty promise if ever there were one. It’s not as though future budgets are fixed in stone. All you have to do is say “The deficit is no larger than it would have otherwise been.”

didn’t they use the term “Progressive” and still do...used that in the 30’s which was the same group: commies, socialists, lefties...(FDR, Kennedy, Alinsky et al)all together working for a very left, govt controlled agenda.
You have described this very well...even in Europe, the socialism has been a creep, creep, creep...but behind it is the Bader-Meinhof Gang..who literally just exploded “too soon”.
The word "I" is used ad nauseam in his speeches to give those who listen to him the crazy idea that Obama actually wrote the words that he reads from the teleprompter.
Why Communism? What does Communism offer that is more appealing than liberty?

Communism isn’t appealing to me, or to the 2 million who marched in Washington.
We must start electing representatives who will not only put the break on the inexorable creep toward communism, but reverse the train!
By the way...one of my pet issues is government schooling. Of all the weapons in the Marxist arsenal, schools are their most important and powerful weapon against freedom. Government schools must be shut down. We must get our nation’s children into private conservative schools.

I'd tend towards National Marxo-Racial-Socialist.
They do want private ownership with national control - like the National Socialists, but get their training and loyalty strictly from their Communist-socialist upbringing and training (college indoctrination/propaganda).

It is definitely apparent the author of this piece doesn't know David Brooks the way many authentic Conservatives know him: A Judas Goat who has spared no ink in trashing Sarah Palin and other social and fiscal Conservatives. As Mark 'The Great One' Levin quipped on one of his shows recently, Brooks is a buffoon and a putz.
I don’t disagree that he works incrementally.
