I think that’s the single fact that has everyone’s spidey sense on alert: Why this particular day, at this particular time, at this particular place? Either a bonehead decision somewhere up the line of command, or there’s something fishy about this. I suspect some poor Coastie is going to take the fall for this one.

Does it matter?

Looks to me like somebody with a scanner but the errant crap out there. FOX did not run with it until later when CNN would not drop the story. I'm sure all the news services who usually make these sorts of mistakes, all made them at the same time.

There was nothing short of scrambling all their radio channels that Coast Guard could do to Idiot proof their training regimen.

I doubt it. Obama wants us to forget about the terrorists on 9-11. We're supposed to be remembering "man-made disasters" through state-directed "service."

Sounds like a low-level screwup, and not really much of one, since it looks like these reports came from people listening over Coast Guard frequencies (which I'm surprised aren't more secure) rather than anyone actually observing the vessels involved.

In fact, I have no problem with them running exercises on September 11. Maintaining readiness to make sure September 11 doesn't happen again seems to me like a fine way to honor the victims. Besides, in its small way, it reminded us that we're still at war, a fact a lot of people in our government would like us to forget.

I am with you! The media is blowing this up beyond what actually happened!

Krap! The CG comes out at a news presser and tells everyone this was a training exercise - that should have been the end of it! But no! It takes the CG spokesman 15-20 min. to explain over and over to these idiot media people -

It Was An Exercise!

I would have done the same thing. These training things are not big planned out deals, they are more like play. You do them when you have 15 minutes to do them and everyone is available. There is no logical reason not to do them at any available time of day.

They were done with their mission for the day and they used the extra time to increase proficiency. You can't fault them for what the news people did.

They could have said it was an exercise two hours ago. It happened about 10am

So, you condone ill-timed exercises by law enforcement on the morning of 9-11?

Here I am again, prepping for something I can't see, and there is a good chance nothing will happen, but I am prepared, none the less.

Exactly. You don't wear a seatbelt planning to get in a wreck, you wear it because you know that you'll regret it if you do get in a wreck. It's just like what I tell people who see guns in my house and ask me if I'm expecting someone to break in. I say, "No. If I did, I'd move."

And I agree with what you said about the Coast Guard. This isn't their fault. In fact, for people whose job it is to defend us against terrorists to take this day to not stay sharp would be an awfully poor way to remember September 11th.

Despite Gibbsy's chastisement of CNN for getting it wrong, even the CG admitted in it's noon presser in re: the inceident that it may have screwed up here.

Coast Guard to review exercise after Potomac security scare:

The U.S. Coast Guard promised a "thorough review" after a training incident Friday along the Potomac River briefly triggered concerns about the security of President Obama on the eighth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

"We are still gathering information [on] how this training event might have been misconstrued as an actual incident. We will conduct a thorough review of this incident," the Coast Guard said.

Looks like CNN is to blame here. If the CG does these excercises everyday/every week..why hasn’t CNN jumped the gun before? I’ll tell you why...they are monitoring all traffic when Obama is on the move because they have bought their own meme...’that ‘domestic racists’ are out to get him’.

So who is really ‘hoping’ for something terrible to happen to Obama? CNN and the MSM! The media in this country never ‘worried’ about President George W. Bush...in fact, it was the left wing media, hollywood and the leftists that hoped for GW to be assasinated and made movies about it.

MORE MSM HYPOCRISY!

I agree. IIRC, during the presser the Coast Guard says it runs training four times per week. Though this incident seems to have been blown out of proportion it still seems odd that the exercises would run on 9-11, and moments before 0bama’s motorcade passed.

Doesn’t add up.

I do. In fact, I think that’s EXACTLY what they should be doing on 9-11. Their job is to stay ready to prevent a second one. What better day to train than the one that drives home just what they’re training for?

-- Wow! The FAA halted planes at Reagan Airport. --

I make a habit of being "last on" an airplane, unless the flight is near full, so I can pick an empty row. I was leaving town one AM, when, before the plane was loaded, the TSA shut down the airport on "suspicion." Turns out some dude checked an electronic bagpipe through the carry-on X-ray, and none of the screeners would accept his explanation. They saw a PVC pipe with wires inside, and concluded it might be a bomb.

Same idea here. Some bonehead hears something on the radio, and jumps to a conclusion. The media does it daily, although usually without this much detectable and prompt effect.

The Coast Guard main office would not have known about a exercise called by the local commander on the scene. These are just little proficiency exercises and do not involve anyone except the group of boats. There were four of them.

I really don't understand why you or anyone would be blaming the LEO's or the Guard for doing what they are paid to do.

The culprit here is the jerk who bought a scanner, tuned into a protected radio channel and misinterpreted what he heard, then passed that on to the media who aired it inappropriately.
