It looks like a Republican congressman's outburst on the House floor during President Barack Obama's address to Congress has momentarily eclipsed the speech itself, at least on Twitter.
"Joe Wilson," the South Carolina Republican congressman who shouted "you lie" at the president, is the top trending topic on Twitter right now. Trending topics track the most popular conversation subjects on the microblogging site.
"LIAR" and "R-SC" are also trending topics right now, meaning that three out of the ten topics are related to Wilson. "Obama" is the only non-Wilson topic trending about the speech right now.
Wilson made his comment after President Obama said that his health reform plan will insure illegal immigrants. Wilson's retort caused the presdient to pause momentarily during his speech.
A historical moment, very true! If only our leaders had the fortitude of people like Rush, Levin, Beck and the lowly conservative Internet blogger. There would be no apology forthcoming, only bold defiance for the sake of liberty.
Palin - Wilson 2012!!
Bump.
I actually am glad he apologized. I enjoyed the moment, but really it was inappropriate. I don’t want the precedent set that Congress heckles the President.
Joe Wilson stopped taking it tonight. When will you stop taking it?
"Oh You're So Condescending
Your Gall Is Never Ending
We Don't Want Nothin', Not A Thing From You"
“Were it not for political correctness, it would be the kind of moment written up in the history books.
I have watched a lot of speeches to Congress and never witnessed something like this.”
...but still, it was bad behavior and sets a bad precedent unless seriously admonished now. If someone stood up and called a politician a liar every time they were known to have lied (never mind, when they were THOUGHT to have lied), it would be utter chaos for all political parties. OTOH, speeches would be much shorter...
He didn’t apologize for the substance of the comment, only for the outburst during the speech.
It’s like cutting the cheese and then apologizing. Too late. The damage is done.
The libs’ heads are exploding over at MSDNC.
Yeah, but Obama hasn’t apologized for calling the media, radio, leaders in Washington and the American citizenry liars....
Yeah, that knowledge makes me feel sooooo good. Bout time they got some of what they dished out the last 6 years!
EXACTLY! He did not retract his outburst. He acknowledged that it was inappropriate to disrupt the president's speech and he let his anger and emotion get to him.
It is a perfect publicity stunt and I think he will get more opportunities to explain his frustration during the course of an apology tour.
No! Obama needs to respect the people he serves. That’s the start of it. When he dishonors his office he deserves NO respect. None.
What would we be posting right now if the speech would have been in 2006 and Democrats were screaming about Bush lying about weapons of mass destruction?
Now I personally believe that a lie suggests the orator know the truth and intentionally deceives his/her audience. Does any here think Bush lied about weapons of mass destruction as an excuse to go to war in Iraq? Then do we believe that many democrats believed he did?
If we accept, as both of you have said, it is appropriate in this case because we believe he is a liar (as I do), then we give up our intellectual honesty and integrity when we admonish our opposition in the future for behaving the same way whether we think their pretense for doing so is right or wrong. Shall we be hypocrites because liberals are?
I personally enjoy being a conservative and all the presumptions of strong values and nobility that the label carries. Even liberal admit that they are wacky when you try to engage in intellectual debate about issues.
As I started, we may not agree on this. But dang I did so love it when he did. And it will help me sleep tonight.
As I have said, I choose to honor the position and the office for the sake of our founding fathers and the sacrifices of a million soldiers before us.
I do not respect the man in that position.
This could be a “but the Emperor isn’t wearing any clothes!” moment.
