'Joe Wilson' top trending topic on Twitter

It looks like a Republican congressman's outburst on the House floor during President Barack Obama's address to Congress has momentarily eclipsed the speech itself, at least on Twitter.

"Joe Wilson," the South Carolina Republican congressman who shouted "you lie" at the president, is the top trending topic on Twitter right now. Trending topics track the most popular conversation subjects on the microblogging site.

"LIAR" and "R-SC" are also trending topics right now, meaning that three out of the ten topics are related to Wilson. "Obama" is the only non-Wilson topic trending about the speech right now.

Wilson made his comment after President Obama said that his health reform plan will insure illegal immigrants. Wilson's retort caused the presdient to pause momentarily during his speech.

It was a moment of clarity, and even if now he regrets it, he’s going to look better and better, while Obama looks worse and worse....

Don’t be sorry Joe..!!

Wilson's retort caused the presdient to pause momentarily during his speech.

Pause? It completely derailed him.

I appreciated it and regret it at the same time. It made me feel good. But we need to respect the office of the Presidency for the good of the nation.

Consider the lows the dems would stoop to if this were deemed acceptable behavior.

Again, I am glad he did it. I am glad he apologized. He should apologize all day tomorrow and go on talk shows to do it. But I loved it and am glad he did it. It was exactly what I was saying at the same time.

The apology means absolutely nothing. The damage is done.

The pressure he is under—and will remain under—is enormous. I would have preferred he not apologize either, but I understand why he did. I still applaud him. Who else has called it so clearly and boldly? No one.

Sounds like a new Republican tactic is born. Scream “Liar” and print how sorry you are... after the cameras have been turned off.

Obama loses grip on the topic as it becomes overwhelmed by the hate of the Left for Joe Wilson. Fantastic.

Were it not for political correctness, it would be the kind of moment written up in the history books.

I have watched a lot of speeches to Congress and never witnessed something like this.

The apology doesn't matter, no one will cue on it. The outburst was seen by everyone watching.

The damage is done.

Exactly. In a couple of days nobody will remember his boring campaign speech to Congress but Joe Wilson's comment will be all over the media. This is the 'don't taze me bro' incident all over again. Does anyone remember what Kerry was there to talk about ?

But we need to respect the office of the Presidency for the good of the nation.

The president is a public servant, not a monarch. He owes a duty of civility to the people he serves. Obama shirked that duty today. His entire speech was one long condescending sneer in which he essentially accused half of the country of dishonesty or worse.

He had no moral claim to civility. After attacking half the country as liars, he had no cause to justly complain that someone called him on his dishonesty in the same speech.

That’s like apologizing after hitting someone in the face. Damage done.

True, in war you never apologize to the enemy...NEVER! He did it full well knowing the consequences. HE KNEW what he was going and I applaud him for it, that was a gutsy move. Still he should have never apologized...It makes it sound like he surrendered to pressure from the DIRTY RATS...sigh! Where is McVAIN’s daughter and Ozero’s apology to Palin??

The entire discussion on this subject is ridiculous. We do not let illegal immigrants without insurance die in the street now. We would not let them die in the street even with nationalized health insurance, either. You are paying for it now anyway, as a hidden tax in hospital/doctor office visits, and free/reduced cost medicines provided by drug companies.

The real solution is to not permit persons illegally here to live here.

Joe could have took that grand opportunity to show all the world just where Obama lied. They got to him though, so he’d apologize and shut up...
