I have decided at the last minute that I want to try to get to DC for the Tea Party on September 12th. My son works for one of the airlines, so I can fly standby to just about anywhere I want to go.
I hate traveling, and I especially hate airports. I am pretty much a small town country boy who stays at home as much as possible. I really despise going to big cities, but I want to see so many people show up in DC next Saturday that it scares the crap out of the beltway insiders.
What I would like to do is fly into a small town within commuting distance of DC. Can fellow freepers tell me the names of smaller towns that I could fly into and take a train into DC?
I'm not much of a traveler. This is a big deal for me to even attempt. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Charlottesville, Virginia.
You can fly in from Charlotte, NC, New York-Laguardia, Philadelphia, and a few other cities that I can't remember.
There's an Amtrak station downtown that will take you to the King Street Station in Alexandria or right to Union Station in Washington.
Baltimore is a easy city to fly into.
GODSPEED!!
YOU ARE A GREAT AMERICAN!!
Except Baltimore is still a big city, and plus all of Maryland sucks.
This metro link is important once you get there...print one out for your trip. It is the only way to get around in DC.
Hope this helps.
You shouldn’t need to print the maps out. All the Metro rail cars have them on the walls, and they are everywhere inside the Metro rail stations.
I have gone into DC that way many times. But you have to take the Mark into Union Station, then the Metro to your destination.
Why not do what I am doing this time? Flying into Reagan National. The Arlington Sheraton offers free shuttles from there to the hotel. IMO that is much simpler for a traveler not familiar with that area.
Assuming there are still rooms at the Sheraton.
It helped me when I was there..but I am a compulsive planner and like to know the lay of the land when I go somewhere...lol.
The White House has a room waiting for you. Just climb over the fence and you’re in.
LOL, fair enough.
BWI isn’t in Baltimore. It has several ways to get into DC via rail from there.
And yes... Maryland sucks. But I live here anyway! :)
What airline would you be flying on?
None. I'm going to get in my car, park at a Metro rail station, and take the Metro into DC.
Easy to fly into yes .... but it was a nightmare for me the first time getting out.
15 years a go I did some consult work for USFG, in Towsend. Flew into Baltimore, rented a car, drove to towsend for the week, no big deal. Returning I got detoured off the freeway going south, got lost in the inner harbor somewhere, then spent the next hour an a half trying to get out of the ghettos of ghettos.
Screw it ... never again.
That year I made 48 trips out of DFW. I NO LONGER fly and I NO LONGER travel to large cities unless I have to. There is absolutely nothing in them that appeals to me.
As much as I would love to attend the rally, I will never travel to D.C. for anything.

I’m flying into Reagan and taking the metro either to the Sheraton (where there will be other Freepers until about 9:30-10:00 am) or if I arrive late for that for some reason, I’m going directly to Freedom Plaza to look for people to walk with there. In any case, people will be really nice so you can fall in with anybody. I just wanted to find people from my state.
It might actually be easier to go directly to Reagan, and it’s not a bad airport.
But I’m really impressed that you’re going! This is really pulling people in who have never done anything like this before. Godspeed!
Will there be a tea party in Sacramento.
Oh man! I wish me and mr sneakers could go with you! Good luck! And let us know how it goes!
Several years ago, my son and I want to a freeper rally to support the troops. We live in western Pa. We drove to Rockville MD and caught the metro at the Shady Grove station. It was so very easy. It was a Saturday, so parking was free (huge parking lot!), and very inexpensive!
This summer, Mr sneakers and I camped in Southern MD We did the same, except that we caught the orange line.
Good luck!
