Those who are whipping up hysteria over the president's address are playing a dangerous game with an unhinged segment of public opinion.
While it long ago crossed the borders of reason and civility, the hysteria over healthcare reform is -- at some level -- understandable, because wellness and infirmity are really just stand-ins for those most terrifying of issues, life and death.
But there is no similar way to rationalize the bizarre controversy now raging over President Obama's plan to deliver a brief televised address on Tuesday to the nation's grammar school children.
According to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Obama will "challenge students to work hard, set educational goals and take responsibility for their learning. He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives as American citizens."
Sounds innocuous. Who, after all, could be against good study habits, personal responsibility and productive lives? As it turns out, quite a number of people who seem to believe that Obama intends to induct their children into -- well, it's not quite clear what they're afraid of. The Web and talk radio are abuzz with various attempts to organize a boycott of Tuesday's speech. One group is urging parents to demand that their children be excused from watching the president and be sent instead to the school library to read the Founding Fathers. (The theory, one supposes, is that a good dose of the Federalist Papers will inoculate the young against Obama's attempts to subvert the republic through good grades.)

No. It shows a healthy mistrust of the empty suit who is now occupying the Oval Office, and a correct one too.
There is a certain segment of society where the kids could be encouraged to study more seriously (Non-Asians).
If Obama were to say only this .....”challenge students to work hard, set educational goals and take responsibility for their learning”, I would not have a problem with it. Problem is thats not all he is going to say. It will be a push to politicize.
It’s simple. Obama gives us no confidence that he can address children without trying to recruit them to a particular cause.
All the hullabaloo about slavery and Lincoln during the election and inauguration, and now we have a President who thinks it’s OK that people want to be servants to him. Adding insult to injury you are then called names if you, as a freedom loving American, object.
What a kountry!
This coming from the paper who go the ‘finger biter’ story TOTALLY WRONG. Oh! And still is holding on to the tape of Obama in a dinner where Israel is vilified by Palestinian supporters by the key speakers.
The left media makes Obama into a cult of personality, then gets pouty when parents don’t want the cult anywhere near their kids.
Sorry leftards, you don’t get to have your arugula and eat it too.
Better yet, a 2-hour debate b/t Rush and what’s his name? No teleprompter.
I guess you can only see the truth after the koolaid wears off?*sarcasm*
When he reaffirms the pledge of Allegiance to this country I may at that time believe he has my child’s future as a priority.
Until then he’s still in campaign mode and want to try and salvage something of his legacy.

oh and I guess Obama is the one to do it?
Will he tell them they’ll need to start work sooner to pay off this debt he’s strapping to their backs?
We pray for our leaders - as God directs us to do - but I believe in addition to praying for their health, wisdom, and well-being, it is fair to pray that they get a heart and soul transplant.
The Fear of God is the beginning of Wisdom. Having leaders that walk around with no fear of God in their eyes (Romans 3:10-18) has given us leaders with no wisdom.
We have leaders that rule in manner more reminiscent to Lenin and the Bolsheviks than George Washington and the Continental Congress ...
Stay home from school - the worst thing to do for someone stuck in the gall of bitterness and the pit of inequity is to feed his ego by providing an audience to his blather...
read some of the excerpts from Sex Rebel: Black...written by Frank Marshall davis based on his life.
And this was Obama’s Mentor. I wouldn’t want him telling my kids anything.
It’s not the speech, it’s the lesson plans. LAT is trying to divert our attention.
The speech is one issue, the plans point to a deeper intent.
“Someone very important is going to ask you to do something. Are you up to it?..... Ok, he asked you. Now write down your commitment to do what he asked......Mary, it’s been a month. Are you doing what the President of the United States asked you to do? I have your letter here saying you’ll do it...”
I think Bush the elder did some televised meeting with a DC school class, but it was nothing like what obama is going to do.
I'd be a short speech.
LOL! So it's "inhinged" to utterly reject a commie totalitarian competing with parents for the minds of their children?
What a great lot of scumbags. The sooner the are gone, the safer our nation will be.
in 1989, President George H.W. Bush specifically spoke to students about drug abuse. I wonder why there was no huge hullabaloo then..
I wonder what’s the big deal with the president of the United States for talking to students about the importance of getting a good education and being a good citizen....
Maybe we should all just relax and let it go...
