Scientists have discovered that a component of the superfood can protect arteries from furring which can block blood flow and lead to angina, heart attack and stroke.
Arteries dont clog at the same rate and researchers know that a protein is inactive in parts which are more vulnerable to disease.
New tests suggest that a chemical found in vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower can boost a natural defence mechanism to protect against the damage.
Tests in mice have shown that the chemical, known as Sulforaphane, found naturally in the vegetables can stimulate the protein to offer this protective effect.
Dr Paul Evans, from the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London, who led the research team, said: Sulforaphane is found naturally in broccoli, so our next steps include testing whether simply eating broccoli, or other vegetables in their family, has the same protective effect.
"We also need to see if the compound can reduce the progression of disease in affected arteries.
The research was funded by the British Heart Foundation (BHF).
Prof Peter Weissberg, Medical Director at the BHF, said: These fascinating findings provide a possible mechanism by which eating vegetables protects against heart disease.
As well as adding evidence to support the importance of eating five-a-day, the biochemistry revealed in this research could lead to more targeted dietary or medical approaches to prevent or lessen disease that leads to heart attacks and strokes.

green vegetable ping
I eat broccoli and cabbage 3-5 times per week. Maybe I should increase this but I might get sick of these excellent foods if I have them too often.

Dark leafy vegetables will help nearly any wound heal quickly. Cuts, burns, scrapes, surgical sites: the lot. You can see progress from one bandage change to the next.
Sweet. Thanks.
“the importance of eating five-a-day...”
Five what? Pounds? Florets? Truckloads?
These food recommendations drive me batty. Most don’t say in what quantities to eat something. And what’s a serving?
On a good day I can eat a half bag of chips. On a normal day not so much. Which is a proper serving?
Meanwhile I’ll work in the broccoli between the fudge and Jack Daniels. My food pyramid is very simple.
....and protects the children, the planet, your current healthcare plan and doctor, along with protecting us from evil banks, car companies.....
There’s also the little unmentioned fact that a cup of broccoli has as much Vitamin C as an orange.
Please don’t disparage a fine vegetable in this manner . . .
Great one!
Thanks for the posting.
Do they tell you how much broccoli you have to eat per day compared to your body weight to get any results?
If it’s a bushel a day, you’d be better off dead.
Would you like Hollandaise with that?
If they want your blood to coagulate faster why are you on a blood thinner?
My Doctor said I should eat things that have bright colors like Green,Red and Yellow, so I went home and bought a bag of M&M’s.
The article sez eating broccoli protects the lining of arteries, presumably prolonging life, yet avowed broccoli hater George H.W. Bush seems deathproof.

If you are on blood thinners, and have an artificial heart valve or have certain other heart problems you are not supposed to eat these items as they are high in Vitamin K and cause clotting of the blood which can cause angina, heart attacks and strokes. Cheetos is also high invitamin K.
