The cost of living just went up for Illinois residents, but not because of inflation or other economic conditions. Rather, today marks the effective date for increased taxes levied upon alcohol, candy, soft drinks and personal hygiene products. The taxes, part of the $31 billion capital bill, are designed to offset the costs of infrastructure spending across the state.
Starting today a fifth of liquor in Illinois will now cost an additional 81 cents, reflecting a 90% increase in the excise tax on hard liquor. In addition, a 90% increase on the taxation of a bottle of wine and 24% increase in taxes on beer will also hit Illinois consumers. Despite, the increased taxes going into effect today, consumers may not feel the full effect of the legislation until a month from now. Most liquor stores and grocers have stock-piled as much liquor as possible in an attempt to keep prices lower for consumers for as long as possible.
September 1st also marks the effective date for a more than 600% increase...

Yet, these idiots continue to raise taxes. IDIOTS ALL!
I have to increase the amount of Gary Revitalization parfume
that I splash on every day!
This should be a economic learning lesson for everybody. If the people would exercise common sense, they can reverse this. Learn to distill, make your own candy (or do without) and buy shampoo in bulk (from a neighboring state).
Bami’s “home state” will now be the test state for any new proposed govt. program, I bet.
If the junk food tax flies there, it’ll be rolled out nationwide, dime to doughnuts.
They’ve been talking about it since Jan.
Everyday, EVERYDAY is a new affront to our sensibilities and values.
When, Lord? When?
“alcohol, candy, soft drinks and personal hygiene products. “
Wonderful. Folks will now be sober, healthy BUT WILL STINK TO HIGH HEAVEN!
(and broke, too.)
Taxing the poor. Works for me. Sort of helps to offset the earned income tax credit, subsidized day care, etc.
To us good hard working conservatives who drink homemade iced tea and drink in moderation,,make our own popcorn in pan on the stove..this is no big deal, but it will hurt the Sub-Continent owners of the convenience stores and gas stations.
Massachusetts recently upped its sales tax from 5% to 6.25%. Liquor is now included in the tax, even though the price of booze already has a tax built in (so we now have a tax upon a tax).
It is known as the New Hampshire Economic Recovery Act, as it has become well worth it for many of us in Mass. to burn a couple of bucks in gas to do a month’s worth of shopping tax free in NH.
Today is Tax Day in NC as well. Thank you Dems...
“and buy shampoo in bulk (from a neighboring state).”
Buy it on the Web in bulk. Many sites have free shipping if you spend X amount, and often no sales tax. Of course at some point Obama will go after the Internet as a source of taxation and revenue enhancement but at least for now, order beauty supplies off the Web.
“personal hygiene products”
Now there’s an extravagance that needs to be cracked down on. The beauty of this tax is that it will only impact those rich Republicans.
We're always one step ahead of you, Governor!
LOL!

Very clever (as they know that tax on personal hygiene products will never affect their core constituency...)
Personal hygiene products?
Are they calling that the Tampax Tax?
FEE, FINE, TAX, PENALTY, TAX, FEE, FINE, TAX, TAX, TAX, PENALTY, FEE, FINE, FINE, FEE, PENALTY, TAX, TAX, FEE, PENALTY....
No wonder so many damn people are running from Stalinois.
What a democrat-inspired cesspool that place must be.
In 2008, I heard many people complain because the Cook Co. board increased the county sales tax rate from 0.75% to 1.75%. The state sales tax rate is 6.75%. Everyone, who is angry at the county board, should be twice as angry at all of the state legislators who voted for the last state sales tax rate increase, in 2005.
Come one people lets put a sin tax on homosexuality and porn. We can balance the budget on the backs of perverts.
