WASHINGTON Given hardening Republican opposition to congressional health care proposals, Democrats now say they see little chance for the minority's cooperation in approving any overhaul, and are increasingly focused on drawing support for a final plan from within their own ranks.
Top Democrats said Tuesday that their go-it-alone view was being shaped by what they saw as Republicans' purposely strident tone against health care legislation during this month's congressional recess, as well as remarks by leading Republicans that current proposals were flawed beyond repair.
The White House spokesman, Robert Gibbs, said of Republican lawmakers, "Only a handful seem interested in the type of comprehensive reform that so many people believe is necessary to ensure the principles and the goals that the president has laid out."
The Democratic shift may not make producing a final bill much easier. The party must still reconcile the views of moderate and conservative Democrats worried about the cost and scope of the legislation with those of more progressive lawmakers determined to win a government-run insurance option to compete with private insurers..........
“BEAUTIFUL!!!!!”
[doin’ mah BEST Dennis Miller impersonation] :)
They’re like hippy fugitives running from the law in a car chase. Their tires are blown, smoke is pouring from the engine, and they’re trying to beat a locomotive barreling down the tracks 100 ft. in front of them.
The bad is that big, encompassing social programs don't go away once instituted - ever. There will be no un-ringing of this bell. And, it in less than a decade, all insurance would be owned, operated and administered by the Federal government, forever.
They have said this several times.
I really wonder what the actual whip count is in the Senate. If they have 11 who are against the public option, which is entirely possible, they really are screwed.
Heckova thing BUMP.
Tatt
Legislation is purely a Congressional prerogative. They may take advice from outside, but Congress owns what Congress passes.
[My dreams have come true.]
More like a nightmare.
We’d gladly pay a king’s ransom to the Democrats to just up and leave Washington now.
This smells like Reconciliation is afoot.
The Left will happily burn the Constitution to destroy this country.
Stay on their butts, people. They are a tricky lot, but we've got 'em cornered. They're rattling tin-foil sabres now.
Obama is a gatekeeper. Congress can push legislation past the President, but it’s harder.
Schumer’s busy sticking pins in his Ted Kennedy voodoo doll because he knows that the exploding er..uh brain tumah will be enough to push this healthcare pile of crap across the finish line.
Immigration amnesty isn't just about votes. Both parties have a vested interest in growing population in order to obtain tax revenue in order to make entitlement payments.
The GOP is at least as pro-amnesty as the DEM party.
Yep!

2010 Elections! ... here we COME !!
Cool - it is theirs to own. Remember this in 2010 and 2012.
He’s the joker...
Isn’t that what they have already been doing? Fail to see how this is new.
Give me one example of an entitlement program that has been “virtually amended out of existence”. Just one example.
Take your time.
So the Borg... uh, I mean the Democrats are effectively telling everyone that Resistance Is Futile. These arrogant bastards have to be stopped and I don’t care how.
