Programs that allow homeowners to trade in their old refrigerators and scoop up a rebate a sort of cash for clunkers system for the fridge are spreading quickly across the country.
Last week, New Jersey began a statewide program that offers residents a $30 rebate by recycling eligible refrigerators or freezers. Old refrigerators and freezers in Vermont also fetch $30, under a program begun last month.
Pickup is free in both states.
National Grid began a similar program in June, in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
These programs target old refrigerators and freezers the type often found in garages and basements because they use substantially more electricity than those built after the introduction of federal efficiency standards.

Hey you can’t have my beer frig!!
WOW, $30 on a $1000 refrigerator. Are people nuts?
William Jefferson for Refrigerator Czar! He’s got experience with both fridges AND large quantities of cash!!!
I heard today the old clunkers are being sold to Europe, so America, punked again. You’ve traded in a good car for some cheap (probably radioactive) Chinese hybrid while the mob makes out twice. Sure give’em the fridge, you’ll never find another one that runs for 40 years
Excuse me, is your refigerator running? It IS? Well, you better go catch it before it runs away!
A private company picks them up and pays the $50 and gets reimbursed by the State.
They do it for the R-12 freon.
Lol. Every word true. The government has ripped open our pockets, grabbed our wallet and given a cut of the loot to the mob, their co-conspirators. Unbelievable.
Here in Japan we have to PAY $ 30 to throw them away to be re-cycled !
its for GE OF COURSE
I will get rid of my 1947 Westinghouse when it quits. Right now its been keeping my beer, water, and medicines cold for me for over 25 years without a glitch. My freezer is over thirty years old and my primary fridge is twenty years old.
Who counts on 30$ to bump them over the edge into buying a $699 & up product???
WOW....What a savings.....sign me up. NOW
