Taxpayers to Pay for UNION Retiree Health Plans !!!
Boston.com ^ | 8-6-09 | Foon Rhei

Last week I noticed an odd, inexplicable provision in the House bill.

Page 65, Section 164 sets aside $10 Billion for "eligible" health plans...for retirees. Not only that, it specifies the retirees can be as young as 55 yrs old. Now, I know very very few non-union private companies offer retirement health care plans, especially not at 55.
House Bill

So I suspected this was a payoff to the UAW and other unions. I called my Congressman and Senators but NO ONE could explain this to me.

NOW TODAY I SEE CONFIRMATION OF MY SUSPICIONS.

At the linked article, they discuss the letter John Sweeney sent to AFL-CIO members exhorting them to turn out at town hall meetings. Buried in the letter is this nugget:

Sweeney [demands] ... the legislation contain "relief for company/union funds providing pre-Medicare retiree coverage...

Freepers, this is blockbuster stuff.

WE are going to be forced to pay for union health benefits that WE DON't GET.

Aren’t those two groups usually unionized?

Most state and local public empolyees are union. And they’ve been promised GOLDEN health care benefits...for LIFE...paid for by you and me. Many of them retire as young as FIFTY YEARS OLD, so we’ll be paying for them for 30 or 40 years!

But the gov’t entities haven’t funded their liabilities. And they’re dreading taxing their local citizens for it.

I suspect this is Obama’s intent to pass FEDERAL funds along to those governments to pay off their union retirees. That is, you and I will be paying for those generously pensioned California public retirees.

I think that unions are going to be exempt from having to go to the government plan; there seem to be several agenda items afloat by the 0bama administration to give huge breaks to unions at the expense of the rest of us, which will no doubt give incentives for more union membership.

I don't want to pour my hard earned money into California's underfunded pension plan - I don't want to pay for ANYONE'S underfunded pension plan. Same for their generous health benefits that extend into retirement.

If the state or Feds or unions, whoever it may be, don't have the funds to pay the promised benefits, then their retirees must take cuts. I am not saying we leave them high and dry. But, if the funding isn't there, then no more living in high cotton with the gold-plated health care plan for life. Reduce pension payments and make them go on Medicare (or Obamacare, ugh)!

Definitely do NOT take my tax money and fund their bloated pension plans. It is despicable that Congress is trying to bury this 10 billion dollar (and counting) nugget into their abomination of a bill!

I forgot to mention the ones who retire at age 50, 52, 55. Believe me, there are thousands more of those now than there were two years ago. The recent "layoffs" and early buyouts have bloated the pension rolls. For most of us, if we decide to retire before age 65, health care coverage is a huge concern. I solved that problem by BUYING IT MYSELF! That is what the under-65 union retirees should have to do.

The unions must be protected at all costs ... after all, you never know when you might have to call on them for a little intimidation or getting out the vote.

"That is, you and I will be paying for those generously pensioned California public retirees."

That's what I'm afraid of.

I wonder how many other states' public retirees we may be supporting? There are plenty of states in trouble, though CA is by far worse off.
