LONDON (AFP) Most passengers would be willing to stand during flights if the fare was free, according to a poll released Wednesday by Irish no-frills airline Ryanair.
More than 80,000 passengers, 66 percent of those polled by Ryanair, said they would be happy to stand during one-hour flights. Thirty-four percent said they wanted a seat.
"With 120,000 passengers voting and 80,000 saying they would stand on board, Ryanair will continue to explore the concept of 'fare free standing' flights with Boeing and the relevant aviation authorities in the US and EU," Ryanair's head of communications Stephen McNamara said.
Under the proposal, passengers would lean on a stool or ledge and wear a seatbelt during take off and landing. Passengers would still have to pay taxes and charges imposed by governments or airport operators.
The online poll showed 42 percent of passengers would stand if the fare was halved compared to 58 percent who wanted a seat.

some of the darn seats they have on airlines, I’d stand too..
Subway chic?.........
Geez...as if the airlines don’t already squeaze us in like sardines!
I’d rather stand than sit in an airliner seat.
Ummm, doesn’t FREE mean zero revenue? Are we trying to re-create the 2000 internet -stock mania?
I guess they will charge $15 for a coke to make up for it.
this standing stuff will have people draped all over each other, especially over the seats.. The obese who stand will take up 2x their room... the small people will be shoved.... and what about safety? this is insane.... all about the bottom line... and cattle calls.

There are people who are not healthy enough (overweight, etc.) to stand for an hour. They’ll show up for the free fare anyway. They’ll sue. How’s the airline going to handle that?
Landing he**! What about turbulence while flying? Wind shear can sometimes drop a plane like a rock, smashing people against the ceiling of the plane. Standing would be a joke in those conditions.
Standing while on an airplane? Would that violate FAA regs?
Pack ‘em in vertical like a pauper’s graveyard.
If JAL or American offered free (or even half-price) fare to Tokyo, I’d be willing to stand for 12 hours...
If there’s a patch of turbulence, people—and their crap—can get thrown around like rag dolls. I can also imagine all of the drunken chavs who’d take the free flight to their next attempt at soccer hooliganism.
Remind me not to fly Ryanair.
they charge through the nose for each checked bag now..
Plenty of low cost sitting space on the wings...
Might be tough to sell the concept on airlines with bad flight records. It would be like selling coffins on an airplane.
“Id rather stand than sit in an airliner seat”
You couldn’t pay me enough money to travel on an airliner where people are standing. I don’t need a 6’4” 350 lb offensive tackle becoming a flying bulldozer in the air during turbulence.
