In a rare win for gun control advocates, the Senate on Wednesday rejected a measure allowing a person with a concealed weapon permit in one state to also hide his firearm when visiting another state. The vote was 58-39 in favor of the provision establishing concealed carry permit reciprocity in the 48 states that have concealed weapons laws. That fell two votes short of the 60 needed to approve the measure, offered as an amendment to a defense spending bill.
Opponents prevailed in their argument that the measure violated states rights by forcing states with stringent requirements for permits to recognize concealed weapons carriers from states that give out permits to almost any gun owner.

Quelle surprise, mon freres....
Not fun, but I do believe it does violate states rights, and I don’t want a guy from a state with a “no-issue” for domestic violence driving to the next state to get a license from a state that doesn’t have one.
Any chance to resubmit?
58 in favor is pretty impressive. I’m surprised.
That wasn't what it was about at all. This was about folks with carry permits from their "home state" being able to cross borders without automatically becoming a criminal. Someone with a domestic violence rap wouldn't have a valid permit (in most states) in the first place.
So, where do I find out who voted against it?
Once they get their foot in, there is no telling what 'requirements' would be necessary for this type of law to be followed. It would be the initiation of FEDERAL guidlines for the states to pass or not.
It does, however, drive impetus for the other states to increase reciprocity with other states.
Dang, that was a pretty big margin too. The NRA better start using their power to stop this bunch of gun grabbers!
OK - WHO are the Senators that voted against it???
Can anybody post what the roll call vote was?
Reid and his Whip made sure that there would not be the needed 60 votes. That allowed some Senators to pander vote and say that they supported the amendment.
Lugar and Voinovich would have been 60. Nice to see that more Dems voted for it than R’s voted against it though.
Still, knowing that there are more of them afraid to be counted on the wrong side of the tally is good news. If the RKBA crowd can keep playing offense instead of defense with this legislative make-up (remember park-carry and the D.C. vote bill), we’re in better shape than anyone thought we’d be in.
I agree.
I believe in some states, they would be able to get a permit. I don’t know who would have access to each state’s database, but it seems it would be difficult for a cop out west, to know if someone had a legitimate permit from say, VA. I don’t think the state’s databases are available to the feds, I may be wrong on that though. I would hope that the feds didn’t have access to each state’s ccw data.
That's a whole other argument
wow a few surprises in there
Olympia Snowe voted yeah wow finally she actually did something that did not piss me off
Not in this case. Under this law, I could head across a state line, get a concealed-carry license, and come back. If state A has a no-issue for domestic battery and state B doesn’t, guess what you’ve got? A batterer with a concealed gun. No thank you. I’ll do open carry if necessary.
