Syndicated advice columnist Amy Dickinson sided with an un-named college today that told an incoming freshman he must room with a gay student despite his objections. Ms. Dickinson answered a letter of a mother of an 18-year old son:
"I agree with your school's policy not to discriminate. You could help your son by assuming that he will have a successful roommate experience, but let him know what his options are if he doesn't.
Sometimes students are held hostage by their roommates' nighttime schedule, alcohol use, or indiscriminate dating life. That's why the school permits students to switch roommates after a two-week trial.

What kind of response do you expect from THAT last name?
Bulls***!
ROFL!!!
Somebody’s never been in a dormitory with gay people. They are the LAST ones anyone cares to room with and for a whole bunch of really good reasons too numerous to mention in polite company.
I’m sure it would be OK for someone to force this person’s daughter, sister, or niece to live with a pervert, too.
He should have said his roomate was a Republican, Christian, or Jew and he couldn’t put up with his lack of sensitivity.
“My roommate is gay” in and of itself isn’t a valid reason to switch in advance, any more than, ‘my roommate is Asian’ would be.”
I wouldn’t mind an Asian looking at my ... umm ..well, nevermind.
No big deal.
No need to get all butt-hurt about it.
Wait. How do they find so many gay people? Are there gay people applying for this or...? Do they get a scholarship for this? How do they know they’re gay in the first place? Leather mask?
Is it proper for women to expect that men will not share their restrooms and public showers (in locker rooms, colleges)?
Assume that any man sharing the restroom or shower room would never approach or touch a woman in the room, or gawk, or even gaze too long. Assume that the woman had nothing to fear, other than the mere presence of a man and minimal observation of man.
Would it still be proper for women to refuse access to men?
I’m surprised that the college would expose itself to the possible legal consequences that may result from this policy.
I wonder what the response would have been if a gay student complained about being roomed with a straight guy and expressed fears about being ridiculed or discriminated against? I’m sure the answer would have been different.
The offended homosexual will seek counseling and medical attention for the trauma caused by the heterosexual roomate.
Trauma => crime.
Sexual prefence => hate crime
Sometimes students are held hostage by their roommates' nighttime schedule, alcohol use, or indiscriminate dating life.
Creating privileged classes of approved victims. You can’t ever complain about them, but they can complain about you, and get you thrown in jail for your thoughts.
I think “Dickinson” is exactly what the parent is concerned about!
All men are created equal, except some are created more equal than others. /sarc
Myspace, facebook — sometimes they advertise their perversions/unhealthy habits, etc.
My niece roomed with a whore, drunk/doper, thief combination in her freshman year of college. She checked out the girl’s facebook/myspace page whatever and hoped for the best. The hell she went through was unimaginable. She got no help from the RA except the futile advice “to try to work out the problems” with the slut. She worked them out alright on her own terms, but it wasn’t entirely satisfactory.
