LOS ANGELES After six years together, the relationship between a pair of gay male penguins at San Francisco zoo is apparently over, with Harry leaving Pepper for another penguin -- Linda.
The Los Angeles Times reported Friday that the relationship between Harry and Pepper, who lived side-by-side, protecting eggs abandoned by other penguins, came to a shocking end when Harry moved into a neighboring nest with recently-widowed Linda.
The development has sparked a variety of reactions in the blogosphere, where Linda has been called a "home wrecker" who "lives for her own happiness, no matter who gets hurt."
Harrison Edell, a curator of birds at the zoo, had a more pragmatic explanation, noting that Linda's recently-deceased partner was a leader of sorts among the small zoo penguin community, commanding not one but two nests.
"For penguins, real estate means a lot," Edell told the Los Angeles Times, so "as far as penguins go, she was a pretty attractive prospect."
With Pepper rejoining the ranks of the single, Christian website OneNewsNow.com took the split as a sign that "nature prefers heterosexual relationships."
Others were more sympathetic to the bereft Pepper.
John, writing on "The Frigging Loon" blog, said he was "heartbroken" about the split and that he hopes Pepper "finds another male penguin that is ten times hotter than Harry!"

Slut. The guy can’t make up his mind!
He was waiting for just the right kind of girl with a nice piece of real-estate. That sounds a lot like John Kerry.
Nah...he's just Bi-POLAR... >rimshot<
Wait a min! How can you be born homosexual and then simply ‘migrate’ to heterosexuality? I mean, you’re ‘born’ that way, it’s a ‘natural’ response...
GEEZ! This S—t again!? We just had to endure a Waterbury American-Republican article on this.
As that old bumper sticker years ago “Nuke the Gay Whales”, perhaps we could “Nuke the Gay Penguins” too.
I think its a bird thing. I had a baby robin who thought I was mommy for a while until he got his feathers. Now, there he is, out there in the yard with his Robin friends.
parsy, who has gotten two wild birds raised
That was good.
You are TOO good with words! or for words!
Years ago, I attended a cat show and observed two males doing the deed with each other. I asked the owner about that; she said that it’s a common phenomenon among young cats, but that they eventually grow out of it.
Poor Pepper...abandoned for another penguin. I guess he will have to find another mate now.
Well, then the reason is obvious...
She had huge... tracts of land!
Where but San Francisco could you find a queer penguin?
Dude humans are born retarded, or without penises, or with missing ears— why can’t they be born gay?? Of all the defections in nature— that homosexuality could not possibly be one of them seems odd.
There is no scientific evidence to support the born that way theory and no credible scientist will state otherwise. Science is actually quite hostile to the born that way theory.
What seems odd is some believe homosexuals are born that way but there is nothing on which to base their belief.
Don’t confuse him with facts, he is having a bad day...
It just didn’t work out, he kept wearing the same outfit as me!
All the commentators are fracking mad, or have been watching too many Disney films.
This was a ridiculous story when it broke and its still a ridiculous story now. Trying to justify or condemn Human behaviour because of what Penguins do is anthropomorphism run riot.
Truth IS stranger than fiction...I thought I was reading The Onion...LOL
Lol Yeah. Someone out there has a sense of humor.
