Ohio jobless rate hits 11.1 percent (Highest in Decades! Obama gamble loses in bell-weather Ohio)

COLUMBUS — Ohio’s unemployment rate jumped to 11.1 percent in June, up from 10.8 percent in May and the first time in nearly 26 years that the rate has topped 11 percent.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services released the rate on Friday, July 17.

“Ohio’s labor market continued to weaken in June,” Douglas Lumpkin, ODJFS director, said in a press release. “Significant job losses in both the goods-producing and service-providing industries led to an increase in the unemployment rate to 11 .1 percent.

The state’s nonfarm wage and salary employment decreased 33,000 over the month, from 5,133,200 in May to 5,100,200 in June.

The number of unemployed workers, however, increased to 662,000, up from 647,000 in May.

During the past 12 months, the number of Ohioans out of work has climbed by 279,000 from 383,000.

In June 2008 the jobless rate was 6.4 percent. The unemployment rate hadn’t been above 11 percent since an 11.2 percent rate in August 1983. The June jobless rate marked the third straight month the rate has been in double digits, starting with a 10.2 percent rate in April.

The national unemployment rate in June was 9.5 percent, up from May’s 9.4 percent rate.

In the Dayton area, Veronica Adkins, Kettering branch manager for Spherion, a recruiting and staffing company, said her office is seeing a lot of people who worked for Delphi and General Motors.

"The quality of people we're seeing is a lot different," she said. "You see a lot more qualified people. Usually at this time of the year her company sees lots of requests for seasonal employment but that's changed," said Adkins.

"We're not seeing seasonal orders," she said. Companies are doing more with less in areas of seasonal employment such as landscaping and warehouse work, she said.

That reminds me of sea-change and c change. One makes sense, the other doesn’t, yet everyone writes sea-change.

Unemployment in OHio was 5.3% in Jan ‘07 when Strickland took office with the promise of bringing jobs to Ohio. Now it is over 10%, I do not see how any sane person could want to vote for him or Obama again!

My wife is from OH, we were just there last week-end. Everywhere we went it was like walking through a morgue. Lots of empty office buildings, idol factories, etc. Very depressing. My wife’s family and friends were multiple generations of GM, Delphi and other auto-related industries. I feel really sorry for them, they have nowhere to turn.

Kokomo, Indiana: Unemployment rate is 18%, I’ve been told that’s the highest in the country. Anyone know differently?

The only people who should be surprised at any of this are the ostammer true believers such as his black base, the ne’er-do-wells and those union workers who, at the direction of their union leaders, thugs and handlers, mindlessly voted for ostammer. Now they’re eating beans and wondering how to keep the lights on.

F ‘em. I don’t care if every ostammer voter in this country starves. I really don’t. The rest of us have been severely and probably irreparably damaged by their (variously) gross stupidity, white guilt, anti-Americanism and pro-black racism.

“They are ruining the country!”

That was the plan, so yes, it’s working.

You must be kidding. We’re in CA and hope to sell soon. Most prospective buyers want an inspection done, but they’re privately done.

Glenn Beck was talking about the process you describe as a looming element of cap and tax.

You might want to email him and let him know your state already requires a government inspection in connection with repairs.

The government wants to own all real property. There’s an idea ostammer and his thugs are floating that involved the gov taling over properties being foreclosed and allowing the homeowner to stay in the property as a tenant paying rent to the government.

He wants to own and control it all. He’s Hugo Chavez from Chicago. He’s nothing but a thieving thug.

What has happened?

Where are the protesters who said Bush lied now?

Did they give ANY explanation? Assessments are based on value and improvements. In this real estate market, I don’t see how the value could increase, at least not that much. Did the owner do some massive improvement to the property? Or is the government’s heavy hand trying to force a default so they can own the property and sell it for big bucks to a developer - in other words, a back-door imminent domain al la Kelo case method of getting the property without having to pay a dime for it?

Well, this isn’t in the state run media yet. He has set up a meeting for an explanation. Will give full report asap.

(back door imminent domain, IMHO)

Strickland has no excuses. He’s been there nearly a full term. On his watch Ford plants have closed, GM plants have closed, DHL has closed, ABS is going, Delphi is gone, businesses have left, employees have been laid off, workers have been part-timed, and even farming employment is off.

His plan has been more spending, more spending, and more spending. (I do hear he’s trying to get a nuke power plant for his HOME AREA of Piketon....but good luck on that, ‘cause the enviro-wackos in his party have his ear. It’s hard to tell what he really thinks.)

His party opposes coal, opposes nuke, opposes oil, and opposes exploration.

What business in its right mind would want to be here?
