Like a few other intrepid souls, I have received a lot of grief for my defense of Sarah Palins decision to resign the governorship of Alaska.
But after a week of consideration, Id like to amend my position. Not only does Sarah Palins resignation not preclude her from running for president in 2012. I would argue that she is now strongest candidate Republicans could nominate.
That is not to say Palin wouldnt have her work cut out for her to prepare for a run. Nor do I presume to know whether Palin even wants to run for office again. But the fact is Sarah Palin remains one of the most compelling figures in American politics, and she is a viable national candidate.
To listen to the media, though, is to believe that, in the words of NBCs David Shuster, Her national political career is over. Such a conclusion is easily arrived at by taking all the medias criticisms of her as gospel. But many of what the media see as Palins biggest liabilities are actually her greatest strengths. Here are a few.
Her roots: Palins small-town roots and non-Ivy League pedigree are supposed to be weaknesses. She attended obscure schools and uses plain words. She eats moose burgers instead of arugula and would eschew the cocktail circuit for a weekend of hunting and fishing.
But at a time when empathy has become a cardinal political virtue, Sarah Palin is one of the few national politicians who can empathize with middle class Americans. Ninety-nine percent of voters do not have an Ivy League education, nor did some of our most successful presidents (President Reagan graduated from Eureka College in Illinois).

I really like what the author has to say about Sarah...it is fair and thoughtful.
She’s a threat to the elites and their power. They know it.
The rest of us need to make the real political battle clear. It’s the elites who want to control us vs us who want to control our own lives.
IIRC Gary Bauer, the author of this article was a contender for nomination for the Presidency once upon a time, and during that brief moment in history he mentioned something to the effect that the most dangerous group(s), entities were the Leftist International Corporations whom have loyalty to no nation, but only to the persuit of the almighty dollar.
I agree with him to this day.
I think Bauer gets it....though I bet a lot of RINOs (some at Human Events, too) probably are giving him dirrty looks now....
“Palins small-town roots and non-Ivy League pedigree are supposed to be weaknesses. She attended obscure schools and uses plain words. She eats moose burgers instead of arugula and would eschew the cocktail circuit for a weekend of hunting and fishing.”
And THOSE are her cardinal sins, in the opinion of Politico-Media Elites. She is not “one of them”, which IMHO is her strongest possible qualification for the job!
I remember Bauer’s run in 2000. He raised some good issues...just didnt have the money behind him.
Surprised that Jed Babbin (Human Events editor) hasnt run our Bauer, yet. Babbin ran out Jerome Corsi after his exposing of GW Bush and the North American Union. Bauer’s comments surely arent sitting well with the liberal Babbin
This is what I posted in the comments section of the article:
Come July 27th, the Palin Revolution begins. By cutting herself free from the system altogether, she becomes the ultimate outsider. She has had no hand the the massive deficit, but she has, with the pipeline deal she organized, played a part in freeing the US from foreign oil. Sarah Palin not only talks the talk, she walks the walk. She has never shyed away from making tough decisions, in other words, she’s never voted “present.” She’s not the product of a corrupt political machine, she got to where she is on her own without benefit of a machine, without benefit of a rich family, and without riding her husbands coattails. Sarah Palin is just the type of person we need, not just a political hack, but a leader.
She needs to design a choke hold for that Levi Johnston kid.
I am with you 100% — time to tell the elitist in the GOP to stuff it. Grassroots needs to become very active starting right here on the Net and make the Sarah Palin movement grow.
She doesn’t make promises she can’t keep, and doesn’t (as Tony Blankley said) talk down to us, she talks to us.
When I hear her speak, it is like she is in my kitchen at the breakfast table, just talking to me.
When King George heard that George Washington had left the Presidency after two terms, he couldn’t believe it. Supposedly he said something to the effect, “How can he give up power?”
Yeah, George, why would one do that? The media is in a frenzy, “How could Sarah just give up power?”
They will never get it. WE get it, they don’t and won’t.
Someone posted yesterday about a reading of the Declaration of Independence at a Tea Party -
when the reader came to the party about “right and duty to alter or abolish”, the crowd roared in approval.
It’s coming.
MrB, I agree with you with one small exception. You never win on defense. "Its the elites who want to control us vs us who had better get control of the elites."
I don’t think the libtards are afraid of Sarah Palin. All 4,879 hysterical columns since last week indicate a low level of concern about her political future.
The teams are lining up. I’m happy to have Gary Bauer on our side.
Good post, good for Bauer.
More and more leading opinion makers associated with the GOP are coming out in defense of Sarah. Perhaps some recognize there is no point in doing otherwise.
Either way, Sarah’s got ‘em by the you-know-whats (well, those who have any you-know-whats). And they’re getting mighty uncomfortable.
I shouldn’t stoop to this level, but (forgive me Lord):
What’s up with Shuster at MSNBC? Is he queer? Or maybe just spent too much time around Keith the foamin’ Doberman?
And as for Maureen Dowdy (she of the “Palin is a nutty puppy” line): anyone have a count on how many pair of knee pads she’s worn out during her career?
Just curious.
You are soooo right. If I can figure out with whom he is negotiating a book deal, I’ll happily give them some free advice.
