Why taxes will need to go up

Health reform can reduce the deficit, but not nearly enough to address the country's debt problem. Higher taxes and spending cuts will be needed.

FIXING HEALTH CARE Why taxes will need to go up Health reform FAQ: Cutting through the noise Health debate: A little clarity, please Can't afford health care? Barter for it How health reform may help ... or hurt House GOP outlines health care bill

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The promise of health reform is to make care more accessible for everybody -- and to reduce the federal deficit by slowing the growth rate in costs.

But the promise of deficit reduction through health reform might be overstated.

Here's why: Even if reform works well, the cost savings will not be nearly enough to tackle the debt ogre breathing down Uncle Sam's neck.

"Ultimately, the long-term budget outlook will necessitate serious tax and spending changes," says the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, which is led by tax and budget experts from the left and the right.

And "ultimately" really means ASAP, say some tax experts. That's because the financial and economic crises have exacerbated an already tough budget outlook.

"The key message is the future is now. The future has arrived," said William Gale, co-director of the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, in a Brookings video discussing a sobering report on the fiscal predicament that he coauthored with Alan Auerbach, director of the Burch Center for Tax Policy and Finance at the University of California, Berkeley.

The risk is not decades from now, but within the next 10 years. Should investors in U.S. Treasurys consider the country's growing debt load to be unacceptably high, they will start demanding to be paid higher interest rates on the debt they buy to compensate them for the risk they're assuming.

Why have taxes at all... would be much more efficient to cut out the middleman (ie: businesses). Have 100% of salaries go to a new federal agency, with a czar of course. The govt can then take out everything it needs, and give us the pittance that remains. The only people then who need to file income taxes are the ones who expect to get paid.

CNN in Barry protectionist mode attempting to 'justify' why Barry is going to raises taxes on those he repeatedly--REPEATEDLY--made promise to that he would not raise their taxes "one dime." How quaint....NOT!

CNN is laying the groundwork to let the Obamessiah off the hook for his repeated claims that nobody making less than $250K would have their taxes raised.

That is going to be Obama’s “Read my lips” moment, and the media will help him get away with it.

If only we could get this message across.

It's like saying that our health care system is bad. No,it's health INSURANCE that needs change. The care is the best in the world.

‘need’ has nothing to do with the entire issue, IMHO.

Well, not so humble.

For the amount of money that Zero’s pi**ing away already, the fed should have repealed the income tax for an entire year. Oh yeah, silly me, that might have stimulated the economy.

I trust that all of the knee-jerk ninnies that voted for FOTUS (Fraud of the United States)are taking this all in and having real doubts and buyers remorse. They screwed themselves and the country. As the old saying goes, elections have consequences.

I’m thinking about printing and selling a new bumper sticker. I DID NOT VOTE FOR HIM

You know, I think maybe we can refine that idea, and make it really work!

Hmmm... Maybe we need everyone to contribute whatever they can, for the betterment of the Nation and its residents (citizen is so restricting). And we need to make sure a certain level/standard of living is maintained.

I think I could summarize this new, wonderful plan up with a pretty slick little phrase:

From each according to their ability, to each according to their need

Yeah, that's what we need!

/sarc, because some people will never get it
