WASHINGTON -- Aiming to keep the focus on climate change legislation, President Barack Obama put a plug in for administration efforts to make lamps and lighting equipment use less energy.
"I know light bulbs may not seem sexy, but this simple action holds enormous promise because 7 percent of all the energy consumed in America is used to light our homes and businesses," the president said, standing alongside Energy Secretary Steven Chu at the White House.

I think the compact fluorescent bulbs suck and when they die, long before their advertised life span is up, ... The curly CFL bulbs are ugly and are awful dust catchers. Do not want.

The New Light Bulb Czar, Uncle Fester actually conserving on one date night to Broadway would save enough money to power the WH on tradional filament bulbs for twenty five years, not to mention the carbon footprint

Fox news just noted that Bush had mandated these same changes over a year ago.

If there is a brownshirt brigade to inspect light bulbs, I trust you know what your patriotic duty is, correct?

Will we still have to use government mandated compact fluorescent bulbs when the free market brings out super efficient LED bulbs in the near future?

I think the compact fluorescent bulbs suck and when they die, long before their advertised life span is up, I throw them in the trash. Oops! You're not supposed to throw them in the trsh, becauase they can break, and when they do, it's up to you to spend about an hour following all of the iinstructions to clean up the glass covered with toxic mercury.

The lousy twisty bulbs
DO NOT WORK IN THE COLD. Had one in Fargo, ND, and it took about 20 minutes to warm up in the winter before my garage was light enough to see properly.

We've been working on small easily hidden away "grow light" systems and the brackets are a problem. There's simply no need for the new LEDs to "screw in" or "snap in" ~ for many of them it'd make more sense to just give us a flat plastic block where we'd use rubber glue or velcro tabs to affix them. First off, I guess I'm having a problem with the terminology of: "bracket". That aside, if you can't deal with supplying "green" replacement bulbs, LED or otherwise, that a consumer can't screw into an existing - existing for close to 100 years - appliance, then you're going to have problems. Velcro or rubber cement, isn't going to cut it.
Yes, I can see the need for a new connection standard, but the world has been dealing with a very old, and in their mind, reliable standard for close to a century. If you can't be backward compatible, while promoting a newer standard, with no fuss or muss (and minimal cost) to the end user, you're going to lose.
Unless you want government to step in and mandate hope and change.
Oh wait...
Sorry about that last... sorta...

You will need a lot of quarters to finish your shower. Hot water will cost an extra quarter for each 15 seconds.

THREE minutes, that’s real short. This is all total insanity.

I have been buying up a supply of regular light bulbs, small PAR lamps like those used in appliances, Halogen bulbs, candelabra and three-ways. I have been ordering from 1000Bulbs as they have the best price.
I cannot stand the light from the CF things and in 2011 the federal standards will make regular bulbs expensive and scarce

“I will NOT use light bulbs with mercury in them. Period. End of discussion.”
Me, either!! That is why I am stockpiling incandescents.
From what I have heard, the compact florescents do not last as long as they say and cost more — another reason not to use them!
