I remember when lots of us wanted Reagan to run for a third term. We considered asking for a constitutional amendment to allow it. Had we pressed for a vote on extending the rights of Americans to vote for who they chose for a third term or fourth term, would the US military have been right to have deposed Reagan in a coup?

Had we pressed for a vote on extending the rights of Americans to vote for who they chose for a third term or fourth term, would the US military have been right to have deposed Reagan in a coup?

1) Not all of us wanted that. 2) Reagan did not ask for that. 3) Reagan did not disobey a judicial order on it. 4) Reagan did not demand that the army do it anyway. 5) Reagan did not fire the Defense Secretary when he refused to do it anyway. 6) He did not do all this despite no support from his own party or the Congress as a whole. 7) He didn't do it in obvious collusion with Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez.

If Reagan had done all that to try to stay in power...then yes...someone with arms would have had to have stepped in.

Sorry, but even the supreme court doesn’t get to order a military coup. The correct procedure would have been to impeach him, which the Congress was considering at the time of the coup.

As bad as Clinton behaved, I would not have supported the military coming in and removing him from office. Nixon either. That’s not the way democracies work. That’s the way third world dictatorships work.

No way. We would have impeached him and removed him legally. Honduras had that option as well, and might have gone that route if the military had not intervened.

Maybe you missed it, but Clinton and Nixon both violated the law while they were in office. We didn’t have the military stage a coup to remove them. We followed our constitutional procedures. The Hondurans could have and should have followed their own constitution and removed Zelaya by impeachment.

The Honduran ex-President tried to persuade the army to back him for his call for an illegal referendum. In other words, he was going to call for a referendum to vote on whether he could go for another term, and if everybody didn't like it, well, he could claim the Honduran Army was going to make sure it would take place. Except this time the army didn't go for it as they usually do in Latin American everytime a tinpot dictator, like Chavez, wants to become president for life.

And you know, the "democracy" in Iraq voted for Hussein each election with 99% of the vote. Funny how that works out, isn't it?

What is the basis for your comment that Honduras has impeachment procedures like ours? I'm not saying they don't, but nothing I've read so far suggests that they do.

Are you still perusing the Honduran constitution to see if it has impeachment procedures similar to ours? I’d be very satisfied to read the relevant article (translated into English, of course).
