WASHINGTON Millions of people living in nearly 600 neighborhoods across the country are breathing concentrations of toxic air pollutants that put them at a much greater risk of contracting cancer, according to new data from the Environmental Protection Agency.
The levels of 80 cancer-causing substances released by automobiles, factories and other sources in these areas exceed a 100 in 1 million cancer risk. That means that if 1 million people breathed air with similar concentrations over their lifetime, about 100 additional people would be expected to develop cancer because of their exposure to the pollution.
The average cancer risk across the country is 36 in 1 million, according to the National-Scale Air Toxics Assessment, which will be released by the EPA on Wednesday.
That's a decline from the 41.5 in 1 million cancer risk the EPA found when it released the last analysis in 2006. That data covered 1999 emissions.

doomed
And here I thought we were all going to live FOREVER in HopeyChangeyLand.
“about 100 additional people”
People get killed falling down stairs and choking on chicken bones, too. Sometimes they’re hit by lightning.
Just think how well they would do without air.
President Obama has issued a Presidential Executive Order this evening in the Rose Garden forbidding citizens of the U.S. to breathe air. Only certain people will be allowed to breathe....others must wear gas masks. This order will be monitored and enforced by the National Citizens Security Force, formally known as A.C.O.R.N. Deadly force has been authorized.
The EPA does this nasty bureaucratic trick of silently raising the bar every year, unreported by the whores and scoundrels of the drive by media, so it looks like we have dirty, carcinogenic air. We do not. They are lying.
And all for the sake of the cause. What cause? Cause Obama, Browner, and the rest of the true carcinogens, i.e. leftists, seek to scrape your carcass clean of any lingering scraps of wealth you may have managed to accumulate.
Well, if they died falling down stairs or choking on a chicken bone, we would know their names and could count them.
Whenever the statement is made that “about 100 people will die,” you know it’s a computer fantasy model and meaningless. It makes you really want to put the authors under and oath say, “OK, name one person that you can prove has died from this!” If we had a rational government, someone would do this.
It is all bullsh_t designed to have us give over more of our freedom and wealth to the Nazi bastards.
FUBO
This “data” is 7 years old being promoted just in time for the cap and trade climate change/gw scams. The wording and probably the reasoning seems tortuous.
With the lost manufacturing jobs of the past decade and reduced economic activity of the past 6 months, I would be surprised if air pollution hasn’t also been reduced. May be why they are using such old figures because more recent analysis doesn’t fit the agenda.
The account I read said the polluted air wasn’t as dangerous as smoking.
I’ll let you in on a secret regarding EPA cancer risk math. It is a qualitative, not a quantitative measure.
The calculations for cancer ignore solid science evidence both in the form of thresholds and negative studies. Even if the data indicates a threshold at which there is no risk, the EPA ignores the data. If a study shows no risk, it is considered insensitive and the data is ignored.
They also factor in multiple fudge factors so that the estimation of risk is always over estimated. No other risk is calculated the way the EPA calculates cancer risk.
If the EPA says that the risk is 1/100, it is certainly no more than 1/1000 because the very first thing they do is factor in a 10x fudge factor. Based on the data source there can be up to 5 of those 10x fudge factors included.
Because they usually use animal data and the most sensitive species is not know, the risk is usually over estimated by 1000. The real risk would lie somewhere between zero and 1/100,000.
Lets do a little math for the fun of it, lets assume that the risk is really 1/100,000 instead of zero. Applying that risk to 300,000,000 Americans, theretically causing 3,000 cancer deaths. That sounds like a lot but that is lifetime risk. Life time risk of cancer death is about 25% meaning that the estimation is cancer death is about 75,000,000. Assuming that you spend $billions to eliminate this risk, you only reduce the cancer death rate by about .05% which less than statistical fluctuation.
And the government will supply the gas!
Before 6 months are gone, there will be a program that will move these people to better neighborhoods for free and the houses and their contents will be destroyed and buried in hazmat waste areas at huge cost. The inhabitants will receive all new belonging such as furniture, clothes, and cars since the old ones are contaminated.
A year ago, you would have called me a fool and laughed me off of FR. Today, you know the only thing that sounds wrong about this is that it could take as long as 6 months.
Everything causes cancer...including this post.
