Within minutes, six-year-old Rubjit Thindal went from happily chatting in the back seat of the car to collapsing and dying in her father's arms.

"If we had known it was so serious, we would have called 911,'' Kuldip Thindal, Rubjit's distraught mother, said in Punjabi yesterday. "She just had a stomach ache -- she wasn't even crying.''

Rubjit was pronounced dead at hospital barely 24 hours after showing signs of a fever. Later, doctors told her parents she had the H1N1 influenza virus. She is believed to be the youngest person in Canada with the virus to have died.

Kentucky student “critical” with H1N1

A Kentucky high school student is in the hospital, in critical condition, sick with the H1N1 virus. Health officials say the virus is hitting several counties hard.

A common fixture throughout Williamsburg this week is a milk jug asking for donations. The reason, a 14-year old high school student is very ill. “I can just tell you, we had a student with confirmed H1N1. Currently, she is listed in critical but stable condition, showing signs of improvement,” says Whitley Co. Schools Deputy Superintendent Scott Paul.

The teen became sick last week and is among the many with confirmed cases of the H1N1 Flu in Whitley County, where schools have been closed.

And doctors’ offices have been full. “We’ve been seeing all ages, from birth to 21,” said Dr. Kathy Omer of Corbin Pediatrics. Doctor Omer says Corbin Pediatriacs is averaging 150 patients a day. She says many of the children are testing positive for H1N1. “Body aches, fevers, severe cough, vomiting,” she said of the common symptoms.

Doctor Omer says most cases aren’t any more serious than the typical seasonal flu and can be treated easily at home. But the 14-year old Whitley County freshman required a trip to the East Tennessee Hospital in Knoxville. “Obviously they are very concerned. But they are hopeful that everything will be ok. But we’re trying to show as much support as we can,” said Paul.

School officials say they do not know if the young lady had a preexisting condition that could have made her case of H1N1 more serious.

Teen’s mother speaks out after son dies of suspected H1N1 virus
Last Update: 9:16 pm

A 16-year old East Central student has passed away from Influenza Type A. The health department suspects it may be Tulsa County’s first deadly case of the H1N1 virus, also known as the Swine Flu.

Over the course of just two days, LaTowyn Gaston went from being a healthy teenager to fighting for his life. He passed away Thursday night in the ICU at St. Francis Hospital.

His mother hopes her story may help other families, by making them aware of just how dangerous this virus can be.

“He was like my little guardian angel. He would look out for me,” says Dwana Gaston.

Her son LaTowyn was a healthy, strong teenage boy. Then suddenly on Tuesday, the day before his 16th birthday, he complained of flu-like symptoms.

By Wednesday his body started shutting down.” And everything just got worse. His kidneys shut down. And then his heart stopped pumping on its own.” Just 48 hours after her son first became ill, he died.

While more lab tests will need to be done to confirm that LaTowyn died of the H1N1 strain, health officials suspect he is the second Oklahoma child to die from the virus.

Dwana urges parents to seek medical attention for their children immediately if they show flu-like symptoms, and make sure they don’t expose other kids to the virus by allowing them to go to school. “If your child is sick, don’t send them to school because you can infect other kids. And other kids may not be able to take the flu. Some kids can and some kids can’t.”

Gaston wants kids to wash their hands often and carry hand sanitizer, so they can’t catch or spread the virus. She says the more people who know how dangerous the H1N1 virus can be, the more lives her son’s story may save. “If there’s two people that listen, that’s two people may not have to go through what I am going through.”

Gaston was honored with a moment of silence at Friday’s night East Central football game.

Funeral services will be held next Friday at the Biglow Funeral Home at 1414 N. Norfolk Avenue at 11am.

Next week, 34,000 doses of the H1N1 flu vaccine should arrive at the Tulsa Health Department. More doses will follow over the next few months.

To be honest, I’m about the only person asking questions around here. You post this stuff, but you don’t have clue one what it means.

For instance, the CDC says tens of thousands of people die from Influenza each year, specifically 36,000 on average. It also states that Children are one of two specific high risk groups.

Despite this, you see no conflict in the data whatsoever. Tens of thousands of people die, but only a handful of children, despite them being in the high risk group.

Nope, you keep linking folks to the CDC site where it says only about 50 to 150 kids die each year from the influenza.

I’ve addressed this before, but you don’t find this interesting at all. You just keep linking people to the lowest figures you can find, so that this year can be made to look as austere as possible. I don’t think that is productive.

You’re posting every single news article on H1N1 you can find. Why it looks pretty bad until you realize that if we had reported every flu case in prior years, those would have been quite alarming as well.

Tens of thousands of people died in those years. Hundreds of thousands if not millions came down with the flu. If we had been reading moment by moment reports on those cases, it would have been quite alarming.

I’m just not sold on the idea that we are in the early stages of a full blown pandemic and that significantly more people are going to die this year than did in other years.

You’re out of your mind because:

1. You accuse me and others of hyping enforced vaccinations, although none of us have, and I in particular would never even have one or advise anyone to have one.

2. You know nothing about the swine flu if you think it’s harmless.

3. Your foaming at the mouth is not becoming.

And also, I’m not trying to shut you down. It’s just that I’ve had enough dealings with crazy people here on FR and in real life to not want to step in it again.

Have fun talking to yourself since I will not waste any more of my precious human life reading your comments or responding to them.

Why are we crucifying DVDMom who works tirelessly to post information on this flu which may or may not turn into a deadly pandemic. None of us know yet which way this will go.

The flu season has only just begun and not into full bore infection yet.

I know that our news shows the hospital with tents outside because they cannot handle the hundreds of sick children. I have never seen that during a regular flu season.

I personally applaud her for working so hard and giving us a place to come and read the information and use it or not.

People don’t have to come into this thread if they don’t want to.....

Quix, many of these reports focus on one or two individuals and seem designed to scare the holy —— out of people.

Let’s take the report from Oklahoma for example. The way that 16 year old boy grew ill and died was terrible. My heart goes out to the family and friends of both those kids. That is only part of the story though, and the rest of the story was sadly missing.

These two kids could not possibly have been the only kids to have contracted this disease in Oklahoma. How many others did contract it? What were those outcomes? Why were those outcomes different? What percentage of the total infected patient base turned terminal?

If only a couple of hundred kids came down with it and only two kids died, the percentage of mortal outcomes rests at 1%. If thousands have contracted it so far, the percentage becomes minuscule.

So yes, these reports are interesting. They are also very alarming and almost panic inducing. They really needn’t be, if all the facts were laid out. And the fact that the rest of the data is lacking, bothers me.

These are being posted to keep people informed. And guess what. Not all the information is provided, so people are not informed. They are merely scared to death.

Hundreds of thousands if not millions of people contract influenza every year. Tens of thousands die. We could just as easily have said keep the ovens fired up in other years then couldn’t we.

So yes, comments like that do strike me as rather inappropriate.

Your question is a valid one. I’m sure it does look like I am angry with DvdMom. Look folks, while some on this thread are praised for what they are providing, it occurs to me they are not providing quite what you think they are.

See this post to understand where I am coming from.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2278371/posts?page=1753#1753

As far as the information that is posted goes, it’s interesting if you keep it in perspective. I am merely trying to provide some counter-balance to the hyper-calamitous nature of these posts.

Yes, some people are dying. People die every year. Yes some of these deaths are quick and to people who seemed young vibrant and healthy just before symptom onset. That is alarming. Is that the only information that is germane? No. It’s not. How many were infected? Who lived. Who died. What were the percentages?

We have had the steady drumbeat of “PANDEMIC” pounding on the conscious minds of people since April. So now we have literally thousands of people flocking to hospitals because they think a family member shows symptoms. Imagine how many hospitals would have had tents in prior years if influenza had been managed as this flu is being managed.

The media and government colluded to scare the living —— out of people from day one on this. And now everyone is flocking to hospitals, so much so that a big tent has been erected at one. So how many people have died that entered that big tent? How many people lived? If that big tent were truly needed, the percentages would be devastating.

I don’t believe they are. I believe this is being blown up way beyond reason. And as much as I admire the tenacity to post, I must say I find the counterbalance to panic inducing posts to be nearly non-existent here.

That’s all I’m saying. DvdMom is doing a great job of catching every public mention of death. I just don’t see much of anything mentioning survivors, what must be tens of thousands of them that didn’t die.

Yes , I post stories about swineflu deaths because that is swineflu news , & belongs on the swineflu thread.

Healthy children , young adults , & adults dropping dead within 4 days of getting the flu isn’t normal .

And in some of the cases I posted here they get the flu & there whole body shut’s down & they die quick .

Like this case

http://www.kjrh.com/news/local/story/Teens-mother-speaks-out-after-son-dies-of/6bQV_8KVeEmN1kzXEk8t9Q.cspx

I can post many more true stories of doctors , healthcare workers etc ...

who died from the swineflu & you wouldn’t care ....

You worship the mantra of the 32,000 number to proclaim your righteousness ...

You call me a panic / doomsayer for posting newspaper articles .

If your best friend died from the swineflu , yes I do believe you will still shout to the masses that the swineflu is no big deal....

I know many people in many towns & they never heard of the regular flu infecting so many people .

I went to school & HAVE never heard of a classmate dying from the flu . It never HAPPENED before !

You never hear of schools shutting down etc from the regular flu .

The swineflu was still going strong in the summer which is unheard of .

Execept for cruise ship novirus cases I’ve never heard of something so contagious before .

And then seeing this from the head of North Carolin’a Medical M.D. asking all healthcare workers to look out
for Hemorrhagic Pneumonia which can be a fatal symptom of the swineflu .

http://www.ncmedsoc.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/HemorrhagicPneumonia.pdf

You never hear of Hemorrhagic Pneumonia with the regular flu.

I would love for you to find me one article from 1969 to 2008 that has multiply schools closing because of the flu or children dying from a flu outbreak !!!!!

I know teachers who have worked in the public schools , & they NEVER had a child die from the flu until this year ...
