Within minutes, six-year-old Rubjit Thindal went from happily chatting in the back seat of the car to collapsing and dying in her father's arms.

"If we had known it was so serious, we would have called 911,'' Kuldip Thindal, Rubjit's distraught mother, said in Punjabi yesterday. "She just had a stomach ache -- she wasn't even crying.''

Rubjit was pronounced dead at hospital barely 24 hours after showing signs of a fever. Later, doctors told her parents she had the H1N1 influenza virus. She is believed to be the youngest person in Canada with the virus to have died.

Hiya Dvdmom.

Just an update re the Yorkshire outbreak.

I'm 25 miles from Brsdford, nothing at all to report from my area, no one I know has any flu. No one talking about it.

Just FYI, Bowling Green in Bradford is a nearly 100% Pakistani/Bangladeshi community, whether that has any influence on demographics, people travelling back from Asia etc, I'm unsure, it might be a variable for a localised hotspot?

I'll keep you informed of any changes, but nothing to report as yet.

Regards, Beth.

Dalton swine flu death ‘heightens awareness’

DALTON, Ga. — Michael Starks was waiting to pick up his 7-year-old granddaughter from City Park Elementary School on Thursday when he learned that a second-grader there had died Wednesday from the flu.

He was “concerned for all the kids,” Mr. Starks said, and planned to talk to his second-grade granddaughter immediately to “see how she’s doing.”

Candy Chen, 7, died at a hospital, officials said Wednesday. Her death is the first from the H1N1 flu virus in Whitfield County, said North Georgia Health District spokeswoman Jennifer Moorer

Candy’s parents, could not be reached for comment Thursday afternoon.

City Park principal Rick Little sent a note to parents about the death. He told them that health officials had advised him not to “make any changes in our student health and safety protocols.”

Hi luckystarmom,

I’m a homeschool mom so hopefully I can answer your question. First, I think pulling your kids out right now is a wise idea, but to do so (at this point) would mean homeschooling. If it’s already in the school, and your kids are at risk, I’d be doing this ASAP. Each state has their own laws about this - here is a website that lists the laws by state: http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp

Just to give you an idea - in Georgia, (unless it’s changed recently) you can pull your child out at any point, and then file the paperwork within 30 days. Each state requires different stuff in terms of paperwork. Some states will require you to be under an “umbrella” school.

I hope that helps... feel free to send me mail if you have any questions

On a personal note - I’ve been homeschooling for years, but it is a particular blessing to be doing it now. My youngest has asthma and my oldest had brain surgery this year - flu would be very risky for them.

NO underlying health problems in 2nd grader

Dalton H1N1 Victim Called A Model Student

Paul Crawley
Updated 10/2/2009 10:38:21 AM
http://www.11alive.com/includes/tools/print.aspx?storyid=135878

DALTON, GA - Those who knew the bright second grader at Dalton’s City Park Elementary School describe 7-year-old Candy Chen as the kind of student every teacher and ever student loves.

“She was the type of child that would reach out to everybody,” Principal Rick Little told 11 Alive News, “If somebody needed a friend in the classroom, she would be that friend.”

Wednesday afternoon, principal Little had the somber task of sending home a letter to parents of Candy Chen’s fellow students telling them she had died earlier in the day.

The girl’s family didn’t want to talk to the news media Thursday, but local health officials confirmed the child was hospitalized about a week ago and passed away Wednesday morning.

She is now the 14th confirmed death in Georgia from the H1N1 flu and the first in North Georgia’s Whitfield County.

What makes her case unusual is that, as far as anyone knows, Candy Chen did not have the type of underlying health problems that usually prove fatal for H1N1 victims.

South Dakota reports first swine flu death

Associated Press - October 2, 2009 4:45 PM ET

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The state Health Department says South Dakota has recorded its first swine flu death.

The department says the patient was a Shannon County resident in the 40-49 age group who had underlying health conditions.

The department says the victim’s name and other details can’t be released due to state confidentiality statutes.

South Dakota has reported 191 lab-confirmed cases of H1N1 flu and 25 hospitalizations since the start of the 2009-2010 flu season.

The state expects to start offering H1N1 vaccine to high-risk groups such as pregnant women and young children by mid-October.

.S. laboratories to be overloaded with swine flu tests

www.chinaview.cn 2009-10-03 05:46:18
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-10/03/content_12175433.htm

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) — As the outbreak of H1N1, also known as swine flu, is spreading, U.S. laboratories could see a big surge in their testing workload this fall, the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) warned on Friday.

This would lead to delays in tests for other diseases, potentially putting some patients at risk, the society said.

A large spike in swine flu screenings could clog a lab system already struggling with a shortage of workers, the ASCP said.

Citing federal statistics, the ASCP said that 138,000 new laboratory professionals will be needed nationwide by 2012, but fewer than 50,000 will be trained.

California and other Far West states are weathering a 53 percent shortage of medical technologists in hospitals, commercial labs and other diagnostic facilities; followed by 46 percent in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas, and 42 percent in the Northeast.

The shortage drew concerns from several laboratory professionals affiliated with the ASCP.

“There are now thousands of different tests that doctors can order,” said Dr. Michael Laposata, chief of pathology at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville. “The whole issue of sheer workload and labor shortage is playing out in a big way with this H1N1 virus.”

Much of the concern among lab directors owes to the fact that since at least the 1990s, fewer people are choosing lab work as a career. Even if they do, fewer training programs are around to serve students, experts said.

There are several tests for H1N1, the virus that causes swine flu. They range from rapid influenza diagnostic tests, which can detect influenza viral nucleoprotein antigen in as little as 30 minutes, to more sophisticated polymerase chain reaction assays. All require lab personnel to administer and review results, Laposata said.

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A pregnant woman died after delivering a baby within the last week. The woman had swine flu, according to her doctor.

A University of South Carolina School of Medicine doctor said the baby was delivered successfully and is doing well. So far it’s unclear whether the infant has the H1N1 virus.

Privacy laws protect the woman’s identity and specific information about her condition or treatment.

Driscoll Children’s Hospital Begins Triage

Updated: Oct 2, 2009 03:19 PM

http://www.kristv.com/Global/story.asp?S=11249302

CORPUS CHRISTI - Driscoll Children’s Hospital started a process called triage to help ease overcrowding in the emergency room.

Since this summer, the number of children diagnosed with swine flu started to increase and so did the wait time in the emergency room.

Some parents have been waiting up to 10 hours to see a doctor. However, the triage plan should help with that.

Now, patients will be screened as soon as they walk through the doors. From there, they’ll be sent to the auditorium and then they’ll go to another area to be treated, depending on the seriousness of their illness.

The plan is to make sure the sickest children get cared for as soon as possible.

“By doing this it’s almost like an assembly line kind of approach to get all the patients in and out as fast as we can,” Driscoll Children’s Hospital Doctor Karl Serrao said.

We shall see what we shall see. I still say there’s a reasonable chance that we will see about as many deaths during this flu season as we normally see.

I’m not trying to promote hysteria.

But the regular flu usually kills those over 85 , and those under 2 .

I’ve never heard of nurses , doctors , or healthy children ever dying from the regular flu before .

This is a swineflu thread for posting swineflu article’s ...

What are your thoughts on the below thread

This is death rates, just for children who died from the flu, not for adults:

During the 2003-04 season, 153 flu-associated deaths in children were reported to CDC. (This data was collected by CDC.)
During the 2004-05 season, 47 deaths in children were reported to CDC. (This is the first year that influenza mortality in children became a nationally reportable condition.)
During the 2005-06 season, 46 deaths in children were reported to CDC.
During the 2006-07 season, 76 deaths in children were reported to CDC.
As of June 14, 2008, 83 deaths in children occurring during the 2007-08 season have been reported to CDC

Flu Deaths in Children
Flu-associated deaths in children (defined as persons aged 18 years and younger) first became a nationally notifiable condition during the 2004-05 flu season and are reported through the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS). The number of flu-associated deaths among children reported during the 2007-08 flu season can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/fluactivity.htm.

How many children have died from flu-associated complications during previous flu seasons?
During the 2003-04 season, 153 flu-associated deaths in children were reported to CDC. (This data was collected by CDC.)
During the 2004-05 season, 47 deaths in children were reported to CDC. (This is the first year that influenza mortality in children became a nationally reportable condition.)
During the 2005-06 season, 46 deaths in children were reported to CDC.
During the 2006-07 season, 76 deaths in children were reported to CDC.
As of June 14, 2008, 83 deaths in children occurring during the 2007-08 season have been reported to CDC.
(Note: The counts above are of flu-associated deaths among children according to the flu season the deaths occur, not when they are reported to CDC.)

My first reaction, is that it lends itself to the conclusion that this may be man made.

That spreadsheet you just linked me to shows an awful lot of people who had underlying conditions. I don’t have the time now, but I’ll come back after manipulating that data a bit.

When you mentioned the deaths to people mostly ever 85 or under 2, I have to look back on your declaration yesterday that only 50 children a year between the ages of zero and 17 die from influenza each year. I didn’t agree with that then, and I still don’t.
