Soldier suing after being stripped of Subway restaurant franchises

While serving in Afghanistan with the U.S. Army Reserve, Leon Batie Jr. dodged roadside bombs and scrambled to safety when rockets pierced the night sky.

When he returned to Dallas in early 2006, another battle loomed.

As Batie was returning from Afghanistan, he learned he was being stripped of the two Subway restaurants he bought before mobilizing.

The stores were sold to Subway insiders, with one transaction yielding a Subway executive a $100,000 profit, according to a lawsuit Batie filed last year in state court in Dallas County. One issue in the case is set for trial this week.

I personally know of a couple who put a large restaurant in a convenience store and subway put a store in the new wal mart 500 feet away from them.

I know of one shopping mall that has a subway in the wal mart and one right across the lot in a strip mall.
I don’t have a clue how they make any money.

I haven’t eaten there in 2 years. Last time, I had a order of around 50 bucks, they slowed us down to.......unbelievably count, yes count the black olives on all the sandwiches.

Sounds like a case for the SEC.

Not to stray too much, but the biggest problem with insurance plans I see is that, if you really make them "fair" young people won't pay much at all, and old people will pay huge amounts since at some point they are pretty much guaranteed of having major medical expenses.

Not so here in central Florida, unfortunately. Every, and I mean every, Quizno's I've been to in the Ocala area makes sandwiches which look absolutely nothing like their advertisements, but actually look like they've been stepped on! And they do not taste all that good.

The Subway in Dunnellon makes subs that look good and taste fresh-made. It's unfortunate (to me) because the only Subway sandwich I like is the Spicy Italian, whereas, a number of the Quizno's subs (Prime Rib and Peppercorn, Baja Chicken, etc.) sure look and sound good, but in reality, are pretty bland and un-satisfying.

Firehouse Subs (again, here in the Ocala area) offer subs that, of the few I've taseted, are in the Quizno's vein - pretty tasteless.

Both locations fell behind in rent, with Chris Batie and Travis Brown blaming each other for the problem. Leon Batie and Subway disagree on how much was owed. Subway puts the amount at $13,400, but Batie counters that he has copies of checks showing payments were made but not credited to his account, according to Grant Walsh, Batie's co-counsel on the case.

You don't fall behind in rent and expect to keep your franchise. If rent payment WAS made, Subway should be made to pay the damages to Batie.

You don't want to confuse anybody with objective facts, here.

This is strictly an emotion-based thread.

The local Subway is run by Goth’s. Never did want multi-pierce dude preparing my food.

And you stood there and took it?? I’d have waited till they were done and left. If they said you were walking out without paying for something you ordered, you could just say you hadn’t authorized any olive counting. (Course I don’t know what your time constraints were)

I guess it’s dependent on the individual store. Here in Nifongville, the local Quiznos near me does a very good job on their sandwiches, and the best part is, sometimes, they deliver! Awesome for those nights where you don’t feel like cooking and don’t feel like braving the heat, but don’t feel like pizza.

The nearest Subway, by comparison...the last sandwich I got from there, the bread was straight-up stale and hard as a rock. Their sandwiches aren’t nearly as good as Quiznos’. Baja Chicken, extra bacon. Yum.

Subway sandwiches are calorie controlled, fresh and healthy. Our local franchises are run by locals.

The one question I have is: after all of these years, Subway has managed to find only ONE person (Jared) who lost weight by eating there?

I hope this lawsuit is a slam-dunk against Subway. Subway makes me puke, in more ways than one. Nice to know their ethics are as crappy as their leathery, preservative-dripping sandwiches, not to mention that living prototype of people I wouldn’t want to babysit my kids, Jared.

Even though I never, ever eat there, I’m going to email them and let them know they suck for this. May they suffer the paroxysmic projectile diarrhea of a thousand Subway tuna sandwiches.

I had my first Quiznos about two years ago. After two crunchy bites, I realized that there was glass in my sandwich and immediately spit everything out. The manager was horrified and offered to refund my money and give me a new sandwich. I told them just to give me a new one and find the source so nobody would get hurt.

I don’t think I have been back since.

Mmm, mmm, mmm...crunchy.

I guess Subway and Quiznos are both on my do not visit list. Burger King is also on the list after two different hospital stays from their “fine” food. But that is another tale.

I don't know, I think the weight loss thing is probably legitimate. I know every time I eat there, I lose my appetite (and I don't mean that in a good way)! ;-)

Yeah, because you don't get any caloric intake when you puke out the old meat.

I don’t know how one could eat there and NOT lose weight!

They count the portions out and they are indeed measly. Ask for an extra slice of cheese and you are charged.

No thanks.

They count every item that is placed on the bread. Their sandwiches have almost nothing in them; they are virtually all bread.

I'm lucky to live in an area of the country where a sub sandwich at a local shop is usually enough for two meals, so I have great alternatives to the garbage Subway serves.
