Tom Daschle, the man originally tapped to lead President Obama's health care push, is now urging him to drop the idea of offering a government-run plan.
According to ABC, the former Democratic Senate Majority leader had this to say:
"While I feel very strongly that consumers should have the choice of a national, Medicare-like plan, my colleagues do not. . . But we were concerned that the ongoing health reform debate is beginning to show signs of fracture on the public plan issue, so in order to advance the process of developing bipartisan legislation and to move it forward, it's time to find consensus here," Daschle said.
"We've come too far and gained too much momentum for our efforts to fail over disagreements on one single issue," he said.
This is significant news not merely as a result of his relationship to Obama, but because Daschle is somebody who is recognized for his network on Capitol Hill, his ability to shepard legislation through Congress and strike compromises. If he is coming out and saying this publicly, it's a pretty good indication that Democrats simply do not have the votes to pass legislation that would include a government plan.

Nope....Tommy is ALWAYS plays the fall guy....Remember the picture of him at the airport.
This means the same thing that it did during the fight over amnesty: KEEP THE PRESSURE ON!!!
It isn’t over ‘til Helen Thomas sings.
Daschle remembers what happened to a Dem run congress the last time they tried health care reform...a lot of his friends lost their jobs.
Exactly- the progressives always find new and different words to disguise what they’re up to..
Chuckled at that.
The GOP better not compromise
“it’s time to find consensus here”
Huh? No, it isn’t. The DhimmiRats have all the votes they need to pass this tripe, and shove it down our throats. There is absolutely NO bipartisan support needed. The pubbies ought, rather, to be throwing this in the LibTards’ faces at every chance and opportunity.
This is a clearly defining legislative effort. Let the DhimmiRats own it, lock, stock and barrel.
I wonder what Daschle is really thinking.
You mean Daschle has his head screwed on right? I am amazed.
Demos in Congress, especially Blue Dogs, are likely getting VERY nervous about this issue. Dingy Harry already said that immigration with Amnesty is next, not sure they want to try and get reelected with those two anchors around their necks.
Bam has to decide if he is all in or not. If he decides to go for it all, d**n the torpedoes, he risks everything. If he fails, then many will believe it is OK to oppose him and this will be the end of the emperor mentality.
We shall see, but this is good news.
schu
The demonRATS do not have the votes!
I’m sure he and his evil minions have multiple back doors through which they will try and push this through. It’s actually stunning to see the arrogance of our leaders in Washington, many Republicans included. The people say NO, loudly, but they try and figure out a way to circumvent their will in any way possible.
Daschle, the one who said we of a certain age should accept our fate if we become ill and just die - that Daschle?
The one who wrote “Critical”?
Seriously?
Daschle is smart enough to realize that ramming Obamacare through Congress at this time will bankrupt the country,
push taxes to stratospheric levels and be hated by most Americans. If Obama goes ahead anyway it could end the Democratic party and give Republicans decades of control in Washington.
Not quite. See post #8.
Now I see, I missed that one while writing or something I guess.
I knew I didn't *really* agree with Tom Daschle, of all people. Thanks for saving me. ;0)
WTF?
Hmmm. Which lobbyists are paying him off, and how much is he getting to say that?
Daschle just wants Obama and the democrats to sneak it into bills under the cover of darkness bit by bit. (eye roll)
