Father’s Day 2009: “An End to Buffoonish Fathers”

Ah, Father’s Day is upon us. I can’t think of a better time for dads and men to remember how to be dads and men.

Flip on the tube any time during the day and you’ll see fathers portrayed as hapless buffoons – saved from themselves by their wives and all-knowing children. The real life of the modern dad isn’t much prettier.

To be sure, the state of the American male is in a shambles – though I’m not fully sure how we got here.

I remember the ‘60s. The women’s movement was beginning to gain traction, but in our neighborhood the moms tended to cook and watch the children, whereas the men earned the money and tended to the yard, then shot the bull over a few Pabst Blue Ribbons.

I remember the ‘70s. The evening news featured equal-rights protests at which women burned their bras. Still, in our neighborhood, most of the moms stayed home and the dads worked and drank Pabst Blue Ribbon.

During the ‘80s, the economy exploded. Everyone was so busy working and getting ahead that few noticed – or took the time to celebrate – the tremendous strides women were making.

I got my first job out of college in 1984 and began working with many female professionals – they excelled in a range of jobs they wouldn’t have been offered 20 years prior.

The ‘90s came and went quickly. Women kept blossoming and growing and doing well.

And in 2009, women are doing very well. They’re doing better than men at all levels of education. They’re gaining rapidly on men as small-business entrepreneurs. In the large metros, they’re out-earning us by thousands of dollars.

As females excel, males are faltering. We’re dropping out of school at a far greater rate than women. We’re seeing our income stall or decline – even men with college degrees are falling behind.

Somewhere along the way, women weren’t content with mere equality. They decided they wanted to remake us in their own image.

Boy, have we responded.

Sensitive new-age men now spend hours fretting over their looks and style – we spend thousands getting our hair primped, our skin moisturized, our eyebrows waxed.

Modern dads are unsure of themselves, too. Fathers can be found misting up at baby showers and clapping enthusiastically the first time junior uses the commode.

And with every concession men have made we have lost status – we have lost respect. Well, nuts to that.

Look, men, we need to whip ourselves back into shape – we need to remember how men and fathers should be.

When our wives dress our sons up in knickers and saddle shoes, we must respond the way older fathers would have responded: “No son of mine is going to wear any damn knickers!”

We must retake control over the naming process of our children. We must give our boys names such as Tom, Mike, Jim and Joe – not let our wives name them Gilad, Jeremy and Michelle.

We need to stop seeking the approval of our sons and daughters. We are the adults and they are the children. Our role is to focus on the unpleasant job of fathering – to do the often unpopular work that will prepare them for a competitive world.

We must regain our backbone. We must earn respect by being good husbands and fathers – and we must demand that we be respected.

There’s nothing wrong with being more attentive to our children than the father’s of old were. There’s nothing wrong with changing the diapers and having long conversations and showing emotion.

But somewhere along the way we’ve tossed the baby out with the bathwater – we’ve let ourselves become wimps and buffoons – and that isn’t good for our wives, our kids or ourselves.

It’s up to us now. We must restore some needed balance and equilibrium to the American family.

If we do, fathers, after a long productive day of fathering, will be able to enjoy an occasional Pabst Blue Ribbon on the back porch.

If we don’t, it is just a matter of time before modern dads are forced to wear knickers and saddle shoes, too.

“Here’s a Book Perez Hilton and Barack Obama Should Read”
by Doug Giles

SNIPPET: “Not only should Perez read this particular book, but so should Obama and his male entitlement mooks. Maybe Adam Lambert should give it a gander—and all the rest of the American Idol males, too, for that matter. I’m also certain that it would be advantageous for 99% of evangelical men and all the current boys who make up the Republican Party’s leadership to peruse its contents.

So, what’s the book that’ll cure Perez’s paranormalities and shore up BHO’s sell out mentality? Well, it is not Liberace’s biography or Dr. I. Blow’s new book, How Guys Can Get in Touch with Their Inner Diva, or my 2006 book, 10 Habits of Decidedly Defective People, or another one of Alinsky’s rags.

The book that could possibly (maybe) cure Hilton’s heinously deep weirdness, the effete bent of our culture, the wuss tick in churches, Obama’s many ills, as well as the pusillanimity of GOP politicos is Frank Miniter’s new destined-to-be-bestselling tome, The Ultimate Man’s Survival Guide: Recovering the Lost Art of Manhood.

As most of my regular readers know, one of my favorite whipping posts is the metrosexual male imago the man-haters are successfully saddling our sons with. This Puss-in-Boots culture detests men who would be men. That’s why parents and grandparents who loathe what the media and various institutions are trying to do to our boys need Miniter’s new book more than Pelosi needs Jesus and a straight jacket. Frank has penned a manifesto for manhood, a veritable tour de force for testosterone that decisively rebels against the gush of this sassy society.”

"And these do not exist in my generation or any younger. and maybe not in the next older generation or two. This has been my observation at least."

There are a few who think for themselves and are willing to dedicate all of their loyalty to their own clans but not many. Most of the young men have been essentially fatherless, too, and have been misled. The family-prohibiting propaganda is all around us.

While somebody else reared their sons. Why should anyone be surprised, then, if the sons are following the path of those who brought them up?

What a sad epitaph: "I traded my sons' manhood for b*llsh*t and Pabst Blue Ribbon."

But, she tried, slowly at first, to make me urinate sitting down. She was patient with the idea, but would not give it up

And how would she know you were not just "hangin your hog"? I mean did she have to watch? I suppose you could have just lied to her, but it's the principal that counts. Kudos to you for sending her on here way.

Our boys play dodgeball and they use a foam ball instead of the rubber balls we used (they'd leave a nice mark and you knew you were hit. The best ones were underinflated).

But, the games are lively and the boys love the hunt (reminds me of the short story - The Most Dangerous Game). We need to work hard to prevent the sissification of our males.

I'm 52 year old. My daughters asked me what I wanted for fathers day. I told them at this point in my life I have enough “stuff.” How's about some Hebrew Nationals and a steak or two on the grill with a case of Yuengling Lager iced down in the cooler? Okay pop. Now that's living!!

My father was not about to let any of his sons turn out to be some sissy, nor was his daughters didnt dare bring home some wussified limp-wristed worthless male home.
Dang he taught us well. I still go for that rugged but clean look

My Father has told me that at times he felt like he rarely saw his own Father. This is because he was working 6-7 days a week during the depression to support his family. I suggest that this has been the common experience of most children as widespread farming has declined.

IMHO, learning how to respect ones Mother in no way turns him into a buffoon. Rather, it makes him a better man.

Perhaps a better Epitath would be: "We let daycares, and TVs raise our children. Now we have a whole generation of over sensitive, live for the moment cry babies. Waaahhh."

This is because he was working 6-7 days a week during the depression to support his family.

That was not unusual in the 30s and 40s, nor was it uncommon for men to have to leave their families behind to find work. My own father was a Navy officer for almost 30 years, and several times was at sea for a year or more. My brother and I certainly respected our mother, who was commonly known in the family as "The C.O."

However, the article seemed to be describing, as an example to be imitated, men who chose to use their non-work time in shallow amusement rather than in the upbringing of their children. My father and other officers we knew would at least take all the children camping or hunting, and, yes, drink some beer and even some Bourbon in the process!

Part of the perception, I think is due to the fact that the older generation has ALWAYS thought the the younger ones were lazy, braindead, semi-barbarians. It has ever been thus.

Now, some American dude is squatting to piss. Pathetic. But he’s with a fox.

Decisions, decisions. But nobody's holding a gun to your head. The call is always yours, as are the consequences.

I do hope you're enjoying your freedom, because no good could possibly come from any woman who obsesses on how men urinate.

Yes, that’s true. It’s rather amazing that the earliest known examples of writing, after accounting records and inventories, bring up the theme of how decadent and useless the kids are these days. Clearly it’s a universal complaint of adults, across time and culture.
