06.15.09: Pittsburgh Officials Prepare for 350,000 fans at Penguins' Victory Parade
The City of Champions has gone Cup crazy. As Pittsburghers basked in the glow of a second pro sports championship in four months, the Stanley Cup toured PNC Park on Sunday, Sidney Crosby talked about the excitement of a two-title town and people crammed hotels in advance of today's celebration parade Downtown. "It's been an amazing couple of days," Penguins winger Bill Guerin said after throwing out the first pitch at yesterday's Pirates game. "This city is just crazy about it right now. It's awesome. Pittsburgh's such a huge sports town. The fans ... incredible. It's been wild." The Penguins' Stanley Cup victory parade starts at noon today and will take the same route the Steelers did in February after they won their sixth Super Bowl title. It will proceed through Grant Street, loop to the Boulevard of the Allies and end at Stanwix Street. Several Downtown streets will be closed. Pittsburgh officials are planning for the parade to draw as many as 350,000 people, the number who turned out for the Super Bowl victory parade, said Joanna Doven, a spokeswoman for Mayor Luke Ravenstahl.
"For over a thousand years Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed the honor of triumph, a tumultuous parade. In the procession came trumpeteers, musicians and strange animals from conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conquerors rode in a trimphal chariot, the dazed prisoners walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children robed in white stood with him in the chariot or rode the trace horses. A slave stood behind the conqueror holding a golden crown and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting. - General George S. Patton Jr.
>>Another Pittsburgh fan
In the series, I was a Penguins fan. I am hardly an ardent supporter.
I am a life-long Whalers fan, which if you ever posted before on a FR hockey thread, you’d know in about 5 minutes.
After they moved, I am a hockey fan first and foremost, but now root for the Bruins and the Rangers (depending on which team is on the TV).
>>You’re making Penguin fans look pretty juvenile
YOU are made an ass out of yourself with your stupid comment. No one, I repeat NO ONE in the NHL would ever say Malkin doesn’t deserve to be in the league. You have to be a complete and utter idiot to think so.
Does he sometimes display rash behavior? Yes. Do a lot of other players? Yes. BFD.
Here’s what you said in the post I replied to: Obviously you can excuse the petulant behavior shown by Malkin throughout the playoffs, acting, or at least looking like, a 10 year old kid playing pond rink hockey - grinning like a kid on Christmas when his teams wins, and ready to throw a temper tantrum because he didn’t get a puppy for Christmas when his team loses.
You’ve got nothing in there about attacking other players. And then when I asked what was wrong with showing emotion you said nothing. So indeed it IS your fault that what you’re saying doesn’t make sense, because what you’re saying doesn’t make sense.
Actually what shows that he indeed has the maturity to play without getting into fights with other players after the game is that he’s missed a total of 4 games in 3 seasons. Those kind of fights result in suspensions, which he hasn’t had.
I’m a Flames fan not a Guins fan. What you’re saying is silly because... well you’re saying silly things. You’re saying a guy with this awards list:
* NHL Rookie of the Month - October 2006, November 2006
* Calder Memorial Trophy (NHL Rookie of the Year) - 2007
* Michel Brière Rookie of the Year Award (Pittsburgh Penguins’ Rookie of the Year) - 2007 (shared with Jordan Staal)
* World Championships All-Star Team - 2007
* NHL All-Star Game - 2008, 2009 (starter)
* NHL First Star of the Month - February 2008
* NHL First All-Star Team - 2008
* Hart Memorial Trophy nomination - 2008, 2009
* Pittsburgh Penguins’ Most Valuable Player - 2008, 2009
* Art Ross Trophy - 200809 NHL season
* 2009 Stanley Cup Champion
* Conn Smythe Trophy - 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs
doesn’t belong in the league. And backing it up with NOTHING except some vague and statistically unsubstantiated claim of him attacking other players when he loses. That’s just plain silly.
Yup, Pens fan. I must be. After watching (and playing - not pro) hockey for almost 50 years, I must be a "complete and utter idiot".
You sir, are entitled to your beliefs and feelings and may say what you want - it is a free country.
I agree with you that noone in the NHL would say Malkin doesn't belong in the league. Why would they? What do they care? I never said someone in the league would say that!
And I'm still entitled to my belief about Malkin. Obviously, he has proved to you and others here that he does belong in the NHL - I remain unconvinced. I may change my mind next year or the year after that - I consider a tiny little thing called maturity. Notice, I did not call you a name nor question your judgement.
Because I made it clear in my previous posts, which you obviously failed to read - or understand, one of the two. I dislike having to repeat myself, especially to people who fail to or do not wish to comprehend what others say instead of reading what they want read of what others post.
I didn’t fail to read it, I was simply commenting on your OTHER complaint, the one in the post I replied DIRECTLY to.
Let’s review the chain.
You: Obviously you can excuse the petulant behavior shown by Malkin throughout the playoffs, acting, or at least looking like, a 10 year old kid playing pond rink hockey - grinning like a kid on Christmas when his teams wins, and ready to throw a temper tantrum because he didn’t get a puppy for Christmas when his team loses.
Me: Whats wrong with being happy when your team wins and mad when they lose?
You: Nothing.
Now this exchange has NOTHING AT ALL to do with your previous post. You complain in post 47 EXCLUSIVELY about him acting like a kid at Christmas (sometimes happy sometimes not). There is NOT ONE WORD in that post about him attacking other players after losing (which again there’s no back up of this statement from you, he’s never once been suspended in his 3 season career).
So there’s the simple question: what wrong with acting like a kid at Christmas? Don’t go dodging around with previously made completely unrelated comments. Why not be happy when your team wins and mad when they lose.
And meanwhile, you really should drop all the condescension. You lack the clear ability to express yourself that would give you cause to be annoyed at others for not being able to figure out what you’re saying. And frankly being a condescending jerk while accusing others of being juvenile has is a serious pot and kettle violation.
I thought it was funny and good natured.
All the statistics are meaningless when you're not talking about a player's ability . . .
WHICH I'M NOT! ! ! ! !
I'm only referring to his maturity level. Can we agree to disagree on that? I'm not saying Malkin is not a good player, but I still disagree on attacking an opposing player after the game is clearly over.
Being happy when your team wins and sad when they lose has nothing to do with ability. It even has nothing to do with maturity. We all cheer when we win and are sad when we lose.
Next year Malkin will be older (albeit, one year, but hey) and I'll probably change my mind about him then.
So stop throwing his statistic about his ability at me when I'm not talking about his ABILITY!
You fail, as you have an utter inability for comprehension for your interlocutor. You don't even try.
I am sorry you cannot understand what I've said. You see what someone says not from their point, but only yours.
Goodbye.
Stop shouting, it’s juvenile.
Remember two parts of statistics are games played and penalty minutes. Both parts of the instigator rule have existed for all of Malkin’s career, both parts result in suspensions for players, yet Malkin has never been suspended. If Malkin made a habit of what you say he makes a habit of he’d be getting suspended regularly and he’d have a fat stack of PIM (remember the PIM stat is based on assessed not served, so a 10 minute misconduct at the end of the game goes on the stat sheet).
This isn’t about agreeing to disagree. You’re making specific accusations on Malkin, not just general immaturity but a specific kind of immaturity, which would show up on the stat sheet but doesn’t. You say he attacks players after loses, his stats say he doesn’t, and that DOES show up in stats, they aren’t meaningless.
Yes we are all happy when our team wins and sad when they lose. Yet in post 47 you complain about Malkin doing just that. And it is JUST that you complained about because there’s nothing in that post about attacking players, only about him grinning and pouting.
I understand perfectly well what you’re saying. You made a silly statement in post 6, and instead of being man enough to admit it was silly you’ve tried to nuance it into something else. But that something else is false and flies against the facts. I throw the statistics about because they DO show you to be wrong. And all your shouting won’t change that. But it is damn funny watching the guy whining about everybody else being juvenile in a discussion about maturity behaving in such a juvenile immature way.
Well since he didn’t like it, it’s only right for me to apologize.
After all, it’s just about a game.
And we won the Stanley Cup!!! 8^)
I must apologize.
I re-read your post with the "Me" statement above. I thought the "your" meant the fans, not the players, that's why I sad "nothing".
I meant for the fans it's OK be happy when they win and, I'll use the term "unhappy" instead of "mad", if you will allow me, when they lose.
It's also OK for the players to feel that way, too, but not take it out on the opposing team's players!
But Malkin doesn’t take it out on opposing players. Again, that would show up in the stats as penalty minute and suspensions, he gets very few of the former and none of the later.
Stan Savran reporting 375,000 fans attended the parade today!
Also, over 6,000 walk ups for last nights’ Pirates game, where Crosby brought the Stanley Cup to share, and Billy Guerin threw out the first pitch.
Too bad they’re leaving Philly. It was a great rivalry btween them and the Bears.
Why should I "admit" it if I don't think it's silly. At least I'm man enough to stick around and try to defend myself instead of skulking off like people tend to do when attacked. And I had to shout (once!) to get people's attention to focus on what I'm saying - how many posts did it take to do that, huh?
I feel I'm being hit with player statistics when I'm talking a completely other subject. I never mentioned Malkin's stats, but someone brought them up to defend him, and I get accused of changing the subject.
Crosby has great stats, too, and he pulled a few "stunts" in the Finals, as did a few Wings. But I never said anything bad about Crosby, did I? Now I wonder why that is? Maybe he didn't attack a player after the game was over? I happen to like Crosby and think he's a good player and valuable asset to the Pens - unfortunately the Pens fans here will not give me credit for congratulating the Pens on their win and praising Crosby - no, you'd rather focus on what I said about Malkin, a slight observation that maybe he doesn't belong in the NHL (I'll add "yet"), and it's only an observation. Continue the attacks and I'll continue the defense.
It's only incomprehensible to some because they only see one aspect of what I've said and can't get off that.
So what if I think Malkin isn't mature. Lots of immature players play hockey, even in the NHL. And for that, I'm called "stupid", an "ass", and other names. When did call anyone else a name? Show me, and I will apologize immediately!
Almost 8 million people around the United States watched the Penguins’ Game 7 victory over the Detroit Red Wings, broadcast from Detroit on NBC.
That is the largest U.S. television audience, measured by the number of viewers, since Game 6 of the 1973 finals, NBC announced this evening.
Hmmm . . .I don't watch Penguin regular season games, so I don't get to see Malkin except in the playoffs. Still, a player (you've seen this) never gets called for all the penalties he commits.
You say Malkin doesn't take it out on opposing players, but I watched him go after after Zetterberg after the game was over. I've read where Zetterberg's assignment was to hound Malkin during the playoffs and, to me, it looks like it worked and Malkin let it boil over. Am I wrong on this supposition? Only Malkin knows the truth, and I'm sure he would not admit it if it where true . . . .
Because the stats show it was a silly statement. I went cruising his gamelogs on NHL.com, in his 3 full seasons of play he’s gotten 3 game misconducts, in over half his games he doesn’t even get any minors. That simply doesn’t add up to a temperament reminiscent of the Broad Street Bullies.
Your shouting was pointless because it really just showed your own unwillingness to understand how people actually ARE responding to what you’re saying. You keep insisting that stats don’t matter because you’re not talking about ability, and I keep pointing out that PIM is a stat and the immaturity you’re talking about would show up there.
Funny here you complain about being accused of changing the subject, then you change the subject. We’re not talking about Crosby. We’re talking about whether or not Malkin attacks players at the end of a loss, an action that results in 10 minute game misconducts, a penalty Malkin has received 3 times in his 291 career games.
The matter isn’t that you think he’s immature. The matter is that you said he doesn’t belong in the league because of his 70s era Flyers-esque behavior, and his PIM and GP stats say he doesn’t have 70s era Flyers-esque behavior.
All over the place you’re calling people juvenile and saying they can’t read. You’re pretty needlessly brutal.
And for your other post. Yes not all penalties get called. But 3 times in almost 300 games (and never resulting in a suspension) is basically none, unless we assume the refs are ignoring 90% of the time he’s doing it. Yes he went after Zetterberg. But as you say, Zetterberg was hounding him, and periodically players hounding others get things turned into a fight. Which would be one of 3 in Malkin’s career. Once every hundred games just isn’t a pattern.
Well I’m done for the day. Off to the sports bar for some greasy food. Have fun.
Now maybe more games will be broadcast over channels everyone gets. Not everyone gets NHLN or Versus.
