U.S. increasingly unlikely to take any Guantanamo detainees
LA Times ^ | June 12, 2009 | By Julian E. Barnes and Janet Hook

Washington -- The Obama administration has virtually abandoned plans to resettle in the United States some detainees from the military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, officials said, a recognition that the task had become politically impossible because of congressional opposition.

The promise to close the prison came in the first week of the Obama administration. But since then the White House has struggled to maintain the political initiative, and seemed caught unawares when Congress, in a series of votes, tried to ban former Guantanamo detainees from being brought to the United States.

European countries have said for months that they are willing to help Obama close Guantanamo by taking prisoners, but they have signaled that they want Washington to take the first step by accepting some detainees in the United States.

0bama wasn’t ‘caught unawares!’ He knew EXACTLY how to dump this problem back on Congress and get THEM to do his dirty work!

So he puts them just off our coast in Bermuda, releases them as “guest workers” free to come and go, and thereby adds to the growing terrorist population in the Caribbean (or near it, at any rate).

Maybe he should tell Congress, "I won"

Oh, wait. Turns out there's a difference between campaigning and governing. Next January is going to roll around, the the Gitmo detainees are going to be ... in Gitmo. The Islamic world will see you're an empty suited fraud. The rabid left will see you're an empty suited fraud. Pretty much everyone but the people holding your interviews and taking your picture will see you as an empty suited fraud.

Get ready for a long string of defeats after this one. Making sanctimonious promises you fail to keep will be great fodder for campaign ads in three years.

Obama won’t give them to China, because he’s afraid China will kill them. Think about it. These Ughers were training to kill Chinese, but somehow it’s okay to let them go since they weren’t trying to kill Americans.

Yup, walking on water only worked for the real Messiah.

A year from now, unemployment will still be out the moon. Who ya gonna blame after you’ve spent Trillions that you promised would fix the problem.

Anyone taking bets on where or when the first detainees will be sprung by their associates?

I say they get back to the battlefield, kill one of our troops, and then we'll be told that they shouldn't be blamed because we held them too long without cause in Gitmo. I'll give this scenario about 3-6 months to happen.

You might be right in terms of “releasable” detainees.

However, the embassy bombing terrorist is now here to be tried in U.S. federal court. Said to be only the first of his ilk to be brought here for trial.

We now have mirandizing of enemy combatants rounded up in Afghanistan.

What else but that they will be brought here?

Even General Petraeus of all people said he was ok with this mirandizing certain detainees. Well, looks like even the great General wants to keep his job.

A few brave souls have dared pose the question what happens if some of these characters get acquited and are released onto our streets.

Or if they go to prison and become cause celebs to other terrorists to threaten attacks or commit attacks on their behalf.

Or radicalize other inmates.

I think it was Rush who warned that this treating foreign enemy combatants the same as American citizens in terms of rights would lead to giving illegal aliens all the same rights, since, after all, they are actually on American soil and we can’t treat foreign terrorists better than “our own” illegal population.

This is a huge mess.

That will be the classic liberal spin for that scenario, and I think you are 100% correct. "They weren't terrorists until we made them terrorists by holding them at Gitmo".

Exactly right. You can guarantee that will be the mantra when (not if) those scumbags kill again.
