Former congressman to run for Ohio governor Posted: 06:11 PM ET

From CNN's Mark Preston and John King

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Former Rep. John Kasich plans to announce next month that he will run for governor of Ohio, two Republican sources tell CNN.

Kasich has already filed paperwork with the state that allows him to raise money, established a Web site and posted a YouTube video encouraging supporters to join him at a June 1 event in his hometown for a "very special announcement." Kasich has not yet officially announced his plans to challenge Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland in 2010.

"Your assumptions are based on the idea that the military will be on their side."

And what the military does will be the deciding factor in any such scenario. The 2nd Amendment is largely irrelevant either way.

"I have written many op-eds in the NW Ohio area on this subject and gun clubs all across this area know Kasich's view well and will be delighted if he is defeated, as will I."

Yes, far better the noted gun rights stalwart Ted Strickland (who is also worse than Kasich on every other issue) get another term.

"Who else do you have in mind to win during this very important time period?"

Win? What's that? You're talking to the wrong people with talk like that.

Better to lose on 100% of the issues than vote for somebody who would give us victory on 90% of them. Because that remaining 10% (whatever it is) is all-important, and if you're off the reservation on that 10%, you're a stinkin' RINO! So the next guy comes along and he's squishy on a different 10%, which is ALSO the critical litmus test, etc. So goes the logic of the modern GOP circular firing squad.

We need to beat Strickland and Obombah when they are up for reelection. That is my priority. If that means getting half a loaf when the alternative is nothing, I guess I'll take it. As long as it doesn't include abortion. I guess I'm single-issue on that, but I just can't bring myself to support an abortion candidate, and I don't think Kasich is.

On the 2nd Amendment thing, I understand your viewpoint as a tactical matter. But I am wondering if it really is hopeless if we as a free people and armed populace find ourselves facing a tyrannical government taken over by anti-liberty socialist-communist types. Remember Red Dawn? Those kids started with simple firearms and built up their armaments by capturing better weapons. I am thinking some kind of similar tactics might be an option. Take to the hills and harass the enemy into submission. The Afghans did it against the Soviets, the VC and NVA against us, to an extent, a decade earlier.

Note that I do not desire nor do I advocate a re-run of Concord, because we'd get slaughtered in a set-piece, head-to-head match against modern forces (as the Iraqi Army found out). Guerilla tactics would likely be the only viable option, and small arms might be useful there, especially in difficult terrain.

I think your posting history speaks loud enough about what sort of conservative you are...albeit it’s of course your right to be wrong

And if you think firearms rights are not for more than just self defense then you are hopelessly naive.

I’m betting you’re a social liberal fiscal conservative from up north and maybe not a Christian...or lapsed

just a hunch...there is often all that resentment underneath

folks usually spout off because of what they are more than what they believe ...myself included..

we all try to convince ourselves that who we are and where we come from and what are traditions are don’t matter as much as our reasoning but it’s simply not true..

just look at your behavior on this thread...can’t you see you’re sorta outta whack with most of us here

in case you wondered I think GOP big tent hand wringing is a waste of time

Who else do you have in mind to win during this very important time period?

You're likely not going to like this... but anyone but Kasich. I'll vote against him in the primary (for Coughlin but not DeWine if he runs) and the general (for Strickland - rate A by NRA).

I think John has become a little conservative lite but I would vote for him too. He has the name recognition going for him.

Yeah, well then join the 'circle' of which Dan speaks because he'll send you down the river with the next candidate that is 90% except for abortion.

"I think your posting history speaks loud enough about what sort of conservative you are..."

Again, back up your insults and innuendo with specifics evidence.

"And if you think firearms rights are not for more than just self defense then you are hopelessly naive."

Funny, hopelessly naive is the way I'd characterize people who think they're going to be able to take on an M2 Bradley with something they picked up at the local pawn shop.

"I’m betting you’re a social liberal fiscal conservative from up north and maybe not a Christian...or lapsed."

Social liberal? Actually, abortion was the formative issue in my political leanings, and I've volunteered with local pro-life organizations, which I bet is more than you've ever done for socially conservative causes, as long as we're engaging in uneducated guesses about each other.

Thanks for taking pity on me and giving the benefit of the doubt on fiscal conservatism.

Does Ohio count as up north? Keen detective work there, Sherlock. I'm only posting in a thread about the Ohio governor race and have Ohio listed as my home state on my profile. Nice job.

Maybe not a Christian. Wow, strong stuff there. I'm shot through the heart. Yeah, I believe you've read through my posting history. Really. Actually, to be precise, I'm a Baptist.

"just look at your behavior on this thread...can’t you see you’re sorta outta whack with most of us here"

Actually, this thread was about John Kasich running for governor, and it looks to me like I'm in the majority of posters on this thread, who will support him.

"in case you wondered I think GOP big tent hand wringing is a waste of time"

I didn't wonder, actually. Funny thing is, I think GOP big tent hand-wringing is a waste of time, too. But I don't have any patience for short-sighted, counter-productive, scorched-earth hissy fits, either.

No circles for me. I’m interested in beating ‘Rats, in particular Strickland and Obombah. If that means we get 90% of what we want, that sounds like a better tactical position than 0% with Strickland/Obombah. Only a fool would forego a 90% advantage in favor of 0%.

Well, what is it then? You said:

"As long as it doesn't include abortion."

IOW, you could have a candidate that was 90% except for abortion and you wouldn't vote for them. That makes you a 'fool' by your own stated standard above.

Allow me to reiterate: I SUPPORT THE 2ND AMENDMENT...because citizens should be able to own guns for personal protection against criminals. NOT because re-enacting Lexington and Concord is a viable plan for stopping the rise of a totalitarian regime in the United States.

How about when the criminals are wearing uniforms and have the power of the state behind them?

Or are you one of those foolish souls who earnestly believes, "It can't happen here, we're special, we're different, we're better?"

Can you read?

I only ask because I directly addressed this exact point in my previous post, a couple paragraphs up from the part you quoted. Not sure how you overlooked it. Makes you look a little foolish.

I'll copy and paste it in here for you:

"...people who have visions of a future armed uprising by gun-toting Americans against a tyrannical government are living in a fantasy world. Not because our government could never become tyrannical, but because if it did, in the end the 2nd Amendment wouldn't make any difference."

Hope that helped, buddy.

Tell that to the Jews of Europe, circa 1942. Tell it to the Warsaw Jews. Tell it to the well-armed and never-invaded Swiss.

I guess the difference between us is that some folks are naturally cowards, who project that flaw on everyone else.

Any Freepers have some solid opinions about him?

Like all these guys, they tend to get mush headed the longer they hang around. He at one time was a great congressman, unfortunately he has grown. He would still be a no brainer vote against any Democrat.

Oh, so you actually read what I said the second time around. Good for you. We'll say no more of your embarrassing earlier mistake.

"Tell that to the Jews of Europe, circa 1942."

I can't, they're dead. Because they didn't have guns, I suppose?

"Tell it to the Warsaw Jews."

Oh wait, they did have guns, and yet they're dead too, and the gap between the firepower a private citizen can muster and the firepower a military can muster is even bigger today than it was then.

They were courageous people, and they did the best thing they could given the limited options available to them, but they never had a chance.

I, for one, do not intend to follow in their footsteps. I intend to stop things well before they reach that point by, among other things, winning some elections, something a lot of FReepers these days apparently couldn't care less about because they would cut off not just their nose but their entire head to spite their face.

"Tell it to the well-armed and never-invaded Swiss."

This is the part where I call you on trying to change the subject from an uprising-against-a-tyrannical-domestic-government scenario to an invasion-by-a-foreign-power scenario. Nice try.

"I guess the difference between us is that some folks are naturally cowards, who project that flaw on everyone else."

And now we bottom out with insults and name-calling. Ho-hum.

Now, to be sure that we’re communicating here, I’m going to re-post my thoughts on the Warsaw Jews, since we know you have a little problem reading things sometimes. Oops, we said we weren’t going to bring that up again, didn’t we? Oh well. Just in case.

you're the one claiming to be fed up with all of us here pardner.

good luck with all that...and your notion too that only Ohio posters post on Ohio politics.

I've seen your type come and go here for years...if you are soft on what the second amendment is intended for then you have a real problem though to be fair your pro-life support is laudable...it like gun rights is a crucible for many here..

Do you really think the Left wants our guns so there will be less street crime in their naive reasoning or do you think they want us neutered on politics by other means

How on earth do you think a resistance could never happen here? What would you do if they go door to door...which some like Schumer would love to do? btw, I didn't insult you...if you think I did you must be mighty sensitive
