The "party's over" at Notre Dame, as the old Comden and Green song says:
The party's over
It's time to call it a day
They've burst your pretty balloon
And taken the moon away
It's time to wind up the masquerade
Just make your mind up the piper must be paid
Notre Dame chose to honor President Obama. Fr. Jenkins defended the choice with arguments that should make a freshman blush. The mainstream media glossed over the widespread criticism, the withdrawal of Amb. Mary Ann Glendon, and ridiculed demonstrators, like Fr. Frank Pavone, praying at the university's gate.
But at the end the day, the party's over and Notre Dame will will pay for the piper for many years to come.
What is the price?
ND has become the symbol of dissent in the Catholic Church (a designation actually deserved by Boston College).
Many bishops will no longer support the institution and many prospective students and their parents will look elsewhere. Without those students, and the goodwill of the bishops, ND will become even more secular than it already is.
Until Fr. Jenkins leaves, and the board membership is overhauled, ND has destroyed its relationship with thousands of alums and hundreds of significant donors. Millions will be lost by the university over the next decade.
The saddest thing of all, and the most tragic, Notre Dame has committed a scandal that, for the time being, has seriously divided and weakened the evangel of the Catholic Church.
The commencement itself, if you watched it, was a spectacle of non-stop self-congratulation, supercilious flattery, and scripted self-justification. Eloquence was not to be found, though every inane claim to the moral highground received thunderous applause, until even the robed dignitaries placed carefully behind Obama began to look bewildered. Except for Fr. Jenkins, of course, whose face beamed with the delight of a boy who had avoided punishment for coming home with a failing report card.
I recommend everyone put this behind them and pay attention to the meeting today between President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu at the White House. The president is far better on the issue of Israel and Palestine than he is on the Catholic Church and its teaching on life issues.
For Shame!! Notre Dame!! Replace Touchdown Jesus with touchdown Obama and be done with it.
You mean, as in orthodox catholics "dissenting" from the presumptuous superiority of media catholics?
Because if your talking about the Notre Dame position, that's not dissent. It's apostasy.
Obama, the great uniter, the apostaciser.
By “the president” you must be referring to someone other then “Zero”.
Boycott ND televised events if you aren’t an alum; hurt them in the wallet.
Notre Dame has already shown itself to be more secular than Arizona State University where Obama did give the commencement address but was not awarded an honorary degree. If ND hadn’t given him that, the fact of his having given his speech wouldn’t have been such an issue. It was a way by which the university could poke faithful Catholics in the eye with a very sharp stick.
The lesson to be learned by this whole affair is that, with few exceptions, one can say anything, do anything, believe anything, and still be in Communion with the Catholic Church.
Bottom line: there are no standards.
"O villain, villain, smiling, damned villain!"
Hamlet (Act I, Scene V, 106)
Good line!
I don't know what Deal Hudson is smoking. He's normally a pretty smart guy.
Obama hates the Catholic Church and has taken this opportunity to try to damage and divide it.
Obama also hates Evangelicals, and will continue the campaign to demonize them as dangerous right-wing fanatics.
And Obama hates Jews. He intends to destroy Israel on behalf of Islam.
It's as simple as that.
The saddest thing of all, and the most tragic, Notre Dame has committed a scandal that, for the time being, has seriously divided and weakened the evangel of the Catholic Church.
Sadly true, on both counts. This will only embolden those Catholics who are suspicious of the "Jesusland" types, with whom they lump any Catholic who they consider gauche, because they even bring up the subject of abortion.
By the president you must be referring to someone other then Zero.
Unfortunately, conservative Catholics are not necessarily pro-Israel.
I felt VERY sorry for the man sitting directly behind HolyO—he’s in the picture above, in the upper right corner—he looked like he was going to throw up the entire time, and would stand when others stood, but steadfastly refused to applaud the hypocrisy ND showed. >:-(
It is long past due for true Catholics to close their checkbooks (and credit cards) to this modern, liberalistic institution who have methodically and systematically deceived a generation our of their money - their Church AND most importantly their Faith!
