I have it on good authority that those Tristars can suck a 200 pound 12 ft aluminum work stand from the wingtip and process it through the #3 engine during a 100& power runup.
I wasn’t there, but understood the engine was still making some power after the “racket” and had to be shut down, it didn’t flame out.
On teardown, there were only stubs left in the turbine section.

Here ya go.. JAL 747
A Japan Airlines plane sits on the tarmac at Los Angeles International airport after one of the jet engines sucked up a cargo container. JAL Flight 61 had been leaving the gate at around 1:30pm (2030 GMT) when the unidentified object blocked one of the engines, according to Los Angeles World Airports, the agency which operates the airport. Only because he had a flashlight that FOD'ed the engine so the pilot shutdown. Otherwise, he would have been the FOD
I saw this clip pretty recently and I think i recall it being said that it was his helmet that cause the engine to seize up...it was sucked off of his head just before his entered.I suppose I could have misunderstood.

Lousy “editing” of my post...but I’m sure you know what I mean! ;-)

WHY would they use THAT word, “ingest”? What a DUMB word. Engines don’t “eat” things, they ‘suck in’ things.

I saw some video’s from Boeing where they pulled this truck behind a powered up 747 and it blew the truck across the ramp ... so those engines can sure suck and blow .....

The engine looks a little stuffed. Maybe after the Pepto Bismol, it’ll ‘need more FOD’.

More than likely you're both thinking of ABE3 J. D. Bridges and the A-6, not a fighter, on 20 February 1991 aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt during Desert Storm. Bridges was saved by his cranial and float coat not the flashlight.

To this AF guy, except for the F-18, they are all FLNPs.
Oh, and to the person who thought it strange to use the word “ingest” when talking about FOD (Foreign Object Damage/ debris), that has been the traditional word used, although I agree “suck” is pretty clearly accurate.
