I saw this clip pretty recently and I think i recall it being said that it was his helmet that cause the engine to seize up...it was sucked off of his head just before his entered.I suppose I could have misunderstood.

More than likely you're both thinking of ABE3 J. D. Bridges and the A-6, not a fighter, on 20 February 1991 aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt during Desert Storm. Bridges was saved by his cranial and float coat not the flashlight.
