Free Republic.com is Dying (Daily Kooks mention us)
Daily Kooks | Sat May 9, 2009 | The Red Pen

Posted on 05/09/2009 10:08:27 PM PDT by Tzimisce

Most people on Daily Kos are (painfully) aware of Free Republic, the bottomless digital repository of bigotry, authoritarianism and hatred for most other Americans, all wrapped in 90's-era HTML. Usually, sane people who stop by there to check it out, find something utterly appalling within a few minutes of browsing, and close the page, never to return. Thus, there isn't a lot of detailed knowledge of Free Republic on Daily Kos.

One important feature of the site is that it is community-supported through donation drives called "Freepathons." In 2008, Jim Robinson, the site founder, seems to have decided to purge the archives of all but the current and most-recent Freepathon threads. This is a wise decision on his part because you don't have to go back very far to see that Free Republic is struggling to meet its modest fundraising goals.

I’ve been to Kos, and it’s what you would expect. Not mere liberal, but absolutely lefty blather at which sight is to alternately gag and wonder.

Color me puzzled. What would a so called Facebook friendly FR look like? I hope it wouldn’t be cram full of slow, hard to read, busy, and cross-browser unfriendly web code.

Oh, and as good a place as any to go evangelize is townhall.com. It’s chock full of liberal trolls, almost always with almost no censorship. FR experience is invaluable in knocking those fools down again and again.

However, this would be chump change for the likes of Rush Limbaugh. Has Jim Rob thought of knocking on his door?

First of all, Rush Limbaugh supported Romney during the primary so that means Rush is "not a true conservative". Secondly, conservatives aren't usually reliant on handouts from others. I pay around $50 a year for my premium EIB membership. Maybe JR should consider charging. Those of us who think it is worth it will pay and stay. Those who don't will be banished to lurker status.

I often read FreeRepublic using Lynx, a text only browser, and it works fine. I suppose we could always bash those fancy sites because they are not as Section 508 accessible.

AHH, but the Lady Wisdom from Proverbs dispensing Wisdom from her “seven Pillars” can be the basis of Godly just govenment, indeed!

Ah, another Lynx-aware FReeper! Haven't used it much lately, but it used to save my butt regularly on limited-bandwidth networks.

I've worked on a number of projects where we used peer code reviews before committing a change to the source code control system. It really does ferret out problems. A retired admiral came to work at my start-up in 1997. He quipped that, "You don't get what you expect...you get what you inspect". My interfaces to FirstUSA Paymentech got a full department review. Marshall Rose recommended an improvement to the section of my code that took the DNS name and converted to IP address. I had taken the first answer. Marshall insisted that I have code that iterates through the alternatives until one succeeds. That technique is useful on a multi-homed host where one network might be down. I updated the implementation accordingly.

Our main problem is not these kooks but congress and the FCC which has wanted to shut down the internet the same way they want to shut down talk radio and the constitution. We are living in dangerous times. These people are out to establish an authoritarian socialist state and I fear that by 2010 they will have completed their mission. They have some 500 + days to go. Just look at what they accomplished in the first 100.

FreeRepublic is very fast and very readable using Lynx. Sometimes I use it even when I can use a graphical browser fro that reason.
