Most people on Daily Kos are (painfully) aware of Free Republic, the bottomless digital repository of bigotry, authoritarianism and hatred for most other Americans, all wrapped in 90's-era HTML. Usually, sane people who stop by there to check it out, find something utterly appalling within a few minutes of browsing, and close the page, never to return. Thus, there isn't a lot of detailed knowledge of Free Republic on Daily Kos.
One important feature of the site is that it is community-supported through donation drives called "Freepathons." In 2008, Jim Robinson, the site founder, seems to have decided to purge the archives of all but the current and most-recent Freepathon threads. This is a wise decision on his part because you don't have to go back very far to see that Free Republic is struggling to meet its modest fundraising goals.

How can anybody live like that. It is weird and frightful. One would think we are all Michael Savage for what they are saying about us.

Ha. Pssst.. don't tell the Kos lurkers, but I'm a registered poster over at DU.
I haven't posted very much. I always feel like I need a shower when I come out of there.

What on earth can you SAY over there without getting banned. I could tell them, using nothing but MSM sources, exactly what a bumbler Obama is and I would be gone.

As far as hatred, bigotry, blah, blah, blah, I’ve heard it before. But this “all wrapped in 90’s-era HTML” business is a grave insult. Free Republic is far easier to negotiate than Daily Kos. And the commenting system is superior.

Only a few posts so far, mostly consisting of the "me too" variety.. waiting to hatch my evil plan.
New posters who speak truth over there get ridiculed then banned.
And the F bomb seems to be a requirement in posts. You know, nothing gets a passionate poster's point across like some crude effin' language. I think there is a lot of fighting and sniping among themselves there too.
I also found that I and FReepers like me are called "repugs". Wonder if they would let me explain the difference between a Conservative and a repug?
They really are a vile, myopic crew.

Last I heard FR was still one of the top 10 political sites on the internet.
KOS is in the gutter.

"Its better than the wild old days where an HTML gaffe could screw up the entire rest of the thread, until somebody posted appropriate tag closes."Ooh. I must be old. I remember those days. Seemed like just about every thread had a "CLOSE YOUR DAM*ED TAGS!" post somewhere. I have to admit, it did lead to some rather interesting-looking threads.

The statists have a LOT more to worry about than Free Republic now. Freepers are the small subset of Americans willing to take a stand on conservative principles. And they are dwarfed in number by the indignant tea-partiers who are motivated by the realization that the government is scamming them out of their savings and retirements.
The other night I attended a local "town hall" meeting of citizens that was every bit as outraged as any Freeper, and planning plenty of political action.
A sleeping giant is truly awakening, and it's numbers are legion.
