The 1918 pandemic was the same thing, killing those in the prime of their life. I think it has something to do with the strong immune system in those middle years. IIRC, the immune system itself is what kills the person, as it aggresively goes after the virus.

Cytokine Storm and ARDS.

I only got to look at the Cytokine storm one - very informative. The human body is pretty amazing. Guess my old boss wasn’t nuts at all for getting into the whole grape seed and antioxidants thing. (That was years ago before it has become more mainstream and accepted.)

I think the statistical odds against this type of [3-way] combination are pretty high, though clearly not impossible.

It would be nice to see what the statistical probabilities actually are that this is a natural event. My curiosity needs satisfaction!

Thank you ever so much for your insights, ga medic!

New Info:

This is 3rd hand info so believe what you will.

A friend of mine works with a hispanic lady that knows the family of the child that died. She said they LIVE in Houston and went to Mexico to visit family. The child got sick and they drove her here because they live here. They took the baby to Memorial Hermann and now the hospital is supposedly shut down. She wasn’t positive about the hospital. The woman that knows them told my friend exactly where they live. They are telling this other story (that they live there in Mexico) so they don’t get in trouble.

just FYI and of course I had no way of confirming the info, except I believe my friend...of course she could have been given false info.

No, what is appalling is the Mexican people would rather slink into our country and suck our social systems dry than stay in their own country and fight your so called "evil and corrupt" government.

This toddler did not "slink" into Texas. The family was visiting from Mexico City. Believe it or not, US customs checks foreign nationals when they arrive at airports. You may choose to believe that the new Mexican regime is "conservative" and friendly. I know that they are wealthy thugs, hiding behind a facade of machismo.

By ignoring or accepting illegal immigration into this country, we have compromised our own rules, regulations and laws. You would have us turn a blind eye when the entire population of Mexico runs across the border fleeing disease and lawlessness? Fat chance.

I do not accept or ignore illegal immigration. This child was not an illegal immigrant. Even if the parents were here illegally; Texas hospitals will not deny medical care. Federal law drives this. Just like any US citizen is not denied medical care in countries that we have agreements and treaties with.

People like you use a broad brush to paint those of us against ILLEGAL immigrants as RACISTS. People like you have an agenda. Wonder what that is?

People like you that believe there is no such thing as temporary work authorization, NAFTA visas, CAFTA visas, tourist visas, and other legal immigration options keep harping the same tired meme. My "agenda" as a lifelong Texan is simple. Respect life. Respect people as human beings. Love freedom. Fight statism in its many forms.

I have traveled to Mexico many times. Been to Europe and Eastern Europe. I have to admit that the statists in those countries do not even pretend any degree of conservatism.

It does have a new name. It is H1N1A. I think it is the media that is hung up on Swine flu 2009.

For what it is worth, KRLD 1080 radio in Dallas is reporting the family of the Mexican child that died had brought him to the US for medical treatment.

I doubt there are true statistics. The numbers would be astronomical. Each time a person or bird or pig gets the flu, there is a chance they could be the vehicle for this combination. I don’t think there is any way you could count how many birds have the flu; or pigs either. Each incidence of the flu for people would be difficult enough to quantify.

Thing about statistics is that if there is a possibility, then with enough combinations, it will eventually happen. In case of H1N1, it appears to take about 90 years to provide enough potential combinations.

So what does that bring the death rate to? Compared with other flus?

1 vs. 36,000 annually. And I heard on Fox that it was a Mexican toddler whose family was "visiting" from Mexico City. Have they renamed this the "Mexican flu" yet?

How would that get them into trouble?

LOLOL but I can't wait that long! I guess my curiosity will remain unsatisfied. :^)

Thank you so very much for writing, ga medic!

Don’t you think that “saving humanity” is a little much?

This entire swine flu episode is utterly insane. The other day on network news some camera man caught a bunch of people walking in some downtown area wearing surgical masks. It simply had to be that the camera man had a bunch of them and paid some people to don them so he could get the photo op.

The other day some baby in Texas died from it. That was tragic, but the news people swooned. How glorious that they could report that your very life is in danger. Then these overpaid underworked bozos at CDC could say they are taking the matter seriously, whatever that means.

I think every person who fears contracting it should sit in the darkest corner of his or her house starting today and stay there 'til Christmas. By then the danger will pass.

I have often felt that the equalizer in planet population will be some kind of bug. I doubt seriously that swine flu is that bug.

Speculation? Then you live the life of a hermit. What source do you have that people get sick every time they travel? I didn’t say no one ever gets sick, I said the percentages are low unless you travel to an area that is riddled with disease when you compare that to the amount of traveling done every year. The kid came from Mexico. End of story. There is nothing else to tell. He and his family just increased the chances for Americans to catch this awful flu. I bet they are all quarantined and I bet they are illegal. Just because they were “visiting relatives” doesn’t make the relatives legal residents. My point is simple. The gov. won’t stop people the sick people from bringing it here and even if it is here now, we don’t need to say “oh well” and leave the borders open. In case you don’t get it, its sick Mexicans that are infecting us. We didn’t give it to them, duh! If this child died within 3 days of arriving here, then he was very ill when they crossed the border. Doesn’t take a rocket scientists or a “medic” to see.
