I’ve never had the flu and neither has anyone in my family or any of my close friends. 3 of my friends took the flu shot and were sick for a week. They said never again. If you eat healthy, use Purell on your hands 3-4 times a day, stay away from others that are sick the odds are in your favor you won’t get it. If you do, your body should be able to fight it unless it’s a rare killer strain.
The reason this one may be hitting the younger hardest is that they don’t have antibodies from other viruses that they haven’t had yet. The common cold is actually thousands of different viruses. Each time you get a cold from the time you are a baby and on, you build up antibodies to that virus and similar ones. That’s why kids always have colds and adults have them less and less as they get older.
. For that reason, I am declaring an unlimited state of national emergency, and among the measures authorized are temporary prohibitions on public gatherings of more than 10 people, with the exception of weddings, funerals, religious meetings, and school graduation ceremonies

WTH is your problem? Maybe we are sick and tired or paying for people that come here ILLEGALY to USE AND ABUSE our resources. I won’t work to support and take care of people that break the law and cross the border to get freebies on my tax dollars. Screw ‘em.
maybe someone already pointed this out....i read on cnn as they reported that a 2 yr old died in texas from this flu....there was no mention as i found out later in another article that this child was mexican and had travled to texas with his family where he died...i know it doesn’t make it any better that this child died , my point is cnn neglected to tell the whole story........they made it out that this was a child that contracted the flu in texas and died there shortly afterwards...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The 23-month-old child who died in Texas of the new swine flu virus was a Mexican who traveled to the United States for medical treatment, a spokeswomen for the Houston health department told CNN on Wednesday.
"The child came to Houston for medical treatment. The family had traveled to South Texas. The child became ill and they transported the child to Houston for medical care," Houston health department spokeswoman Kathy Barton told CNN by telephone.
She said she did not know which part of Mexico the child came from.

I am mystified that there are people posting on this thread that cannot see that this child must have been sick before he came here. Obviously when the flu stories broke the parents brought him here for treatment. Still no word on if they had a visa to “visit”. Very few come across our southern border to “visit” anymore. I read a post where someone asked a question about one of us getting sick if we took a trip somewhere like it just happened to this kid. I am sorry I am not able to remember who it was. I wanted to point out that very seldom do people travel and get sick. The percentages are very low unless they travel to an area that is overwhelmed with contagions. In the last 30 years that I have been traveling, I got sick only once once and in Denver and that was in 1987. Again...VERY SELDOM DO PEOPLE GET SICK WHEN TRAVELING...THEY ARE MORE APT TO BRING THE SICKNESS WITH THEM from where they originate. This child is an example. My condolences but I have my own children to look out for. I don’t need imported illnesses threatening mine or anyone else’s family. ZERO needs to buy a clue with a small portion of the bailout money to learn what “America first” means. He is more comfortable handing this country over to our enemies and I consider Mexico an enemy. God help us all when he and all the traitors in Washington sit back and do nothing. There are other illnesses brought from Mexico, cholera, TB (several different strains). The border needs to be closed. Maybe Gov. Perry will take it upon himself to close the borders with Texas and the fed gov. be damned.
A little good news... Biden is visiting in Houston today - sure hope he visits the little tykes at the Childrens Hospital of Houston

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!
No, what is appalling is the Mexican people would rather slink into our country and suck our social systems dry than stay in their own country and fight your so called "evil and corrupt" government. And they are WELL represented in every way possible.
By ignoring or accepting illegal immigration into this country, we have compromised our own rules, regulations and laws. You would have us turn a blind eye when the entire population of Mexico runs across the border fleeing disease and lawlessness? Fat chance.
People like you use a broad brush to paint those of us against ILLEGAL immigrants as RACISTS. People like you have an agenda. Wonder what that is?

Ask them, would American rather try to manage 500 sick and ill, or 20,000 potentially sick and ill crossing in every single day from Mexico?
_________
They won’t answer that but they probably hope this kills about 25 million Americans, at least. That’s the number Ayers gave and I’m sure that would thrill the hell out of the Kenyan Marxist mentally ill POS in the WH.
When WHO goes Level 5 sometime this week, Homeland Defense
will be there to plunge something like THIS into your arm.

“When we are talking about saving humanity, measures need to be taken.”
Don’t you think that “saving humanity” is a little much? True there will probably be several deaths from this flu, but I doubt that humanity is at stake.
As for WHO and CDC, they are good. They do many, many things that keep us safe. We will never know most of them. They do a decent job of predicting the next strain of flu, and creating vaccinations to prevent or mitigate the flu in people who receive it.
They didn’t catch this one, because it is a new combination.
Doctors and epidemiologists can’t foresee the future, they only make scientific predictions based upon past experience. This isn’t easy. We should appreciate the speed and accuracy with which they have identified this virus, and how quickly they have reacted to inform the public, determined the effectiveness of antiviral therapies, and sent appropriate antiviral stock to affected areas. Much planning and preparation has allowed all of this to happen.
Indeed, it's odd. I've been hearing a number of odd things about this H1N1 virus, though I don't know for a fact whether they're true.
For instance, on Fox News today, I heard that this strain is a composite of eight "layers" one of bird flu; three of swine flu; and the rest, "standard" human flu (i.e., the typical seasonal flu that humans ordinarily get; the human flu component helps to boost human-to-human transmissibility). So I wonder: Is this flu a "natural" occurrence, or is it a product of human design?
A reason for wondering about that: My husband told me he recalled reading an article sometime within the past few months as he recalled, in the Washington Post or Washington Times (???), but he doesn't specifically remember that reported certain biotoxins "went missing" from the Army's biological weapons research lab at Fort Dietrich, Maryland sometime earlier this year or late last year. To the best of his recollection, H1N1 was one of the missing agents.
So hubby tried to retrieve the article yesterday, but it seems it has "gone missing," too.
Anyhoot, I don't know whether this information is correct. But it seems clear there's a lot that's "unusual" about this flu strain, in particular something that you noted, Jim Noble: That the anticipated most impacted population is not the very young or the very old (as is typical with a "normal" human flu), but people in the middle decades of life the 2545 band.
Though this might be nothing but "tin-foil hat" material, it raises interesting questions.
Can anyone out there reading this provide further information?

I assume that you have a source for this evidence, or at least some evidence other than your own personal experience.
There isn’t enough information on this boy to determine how and why he came to the US. Outside of the fact that he is from Mexico, he got the flu in Mexico, came to Houston via Brownsville, and died in a Houston hospital. Everything else is just speculation.
The 1918 pandemic was the same thing, killing those in the prime of their life. I think it has something to do with the strong immune system in those middle years. IIRC, the immune system itself is what kills the person, as it aggresively goes after the virus.
“Can anyone out there reading this provide further information?”
There is human flu, bird flu, swine flu. Pigs are good incubators of both swine flu, and human flu. If a pig contracts a swine flu and a human flu at the same time, the RNA of both can combine and remix, creating a “new flu”. The flu virus mutates very quickly, and with RNA from both pigs and humans, each mutation has a chance of being easily transmitted to humans.
The same is true of birds and humans. At some point in the evolution of this particular virus, a bird flu, a human flu and a swine flu were all recombined. This RNA combination contains parts of bird, swine and human flu, and allows for easy transmission between humans. (the human flu is usually very contagious)
I think the statistical odds against this type of combination are pretty high, though clearly not impossible. Keep in mind that the bird flu was isolated to birds, but in a few cases it was transferred to humans. The epidemic producting combination of human flu and bird flu has yet to materialize, even though they have worried about it for years.
While there might be a slight possibility that this flu was “designed”,I doubt it. The quick and numerous mutations in any flu virus create the potential for a pandemic flu at any time. We spend a lot of effort trying to prevent it, because the flu is so dangerous. (30,000 - 50,000 deaths a year) Pandemics cannot be entirely prevented no matter how hard we try. Fortunately, we can prevent some of them, so we don’t have pandemics very often.
Interesting, 21twelve. We would expect the immune system to "aggressively go after the virus." Oddly, one would think the stronger the immune system, the more likely it would defeat the virus. So if that is not the case, then what does this mean? Could it mean that the virus has a way of co-opting the immune system IOW, by "recruiting" the immune system and "redeploying" it in unexpected ways (i.e., in ways that pervert its natural function) in order to serve its nefarious purposes?
Thus H1N1 is most successful where immune systems are strongest? Jeepers, this would seem to be a rather strange perversion of nature, the very reverse of what we'd expect.
I have a question. Since this is a NEW combination, shouldn't it have a 'new' name? Something other than swine flu sine it has other components?
