Underlying medical problems could be many different things: asthma, cancer, chicken pox, and who knows what else. Is there any evidence the parents knew the child had the flu prior to visiting relatives? Given my experiences with Mexican culture, the last things parents would do is knowingly endanger their child or other family members.

The child is Mexican and came here for treatment of the flu.

Who knew that Egypt had so many pigs? Must be a lot of non-observant Muslims there. Sounds like the Mullahs are using this flu scare for political purposes.

Who would eat Egyptian pork anyway? Nile Crocodiles?

It’s like America’s first case of Mad Cow Disease, it comes from a foreign sourced victim that was already infected.

Quarantine. Now.

And we pay for the treatment.

Maybe if Mexico didn’t have socialized medicine, the people there would get better care.

We should send help to Mexico and treat them there...not HERE!

We absolutely agree on this point! I would add that we should not send money, we should send expertise. Alas, the zero administration already has proposed $1.5 Billion and the rubberstamp congress has approved it. The Mexican government is handing out masks (talismans) to their people instead of building the necessary healthcare procedures and infrastructure. They might as well give them lucky rabbit/chicken feet. While "conservatives" are screaming for an isolationist policy involving every port and border crossing.

We have so much going for us we don’t even realize.

That we do - health, wealth, freedom, daily comforts - it's so easy to take things for granted.

In the past few years I've delved pretty deeply into family genealogy and you wouldn't believe the number of families who lost young children - for centuries, it seems that it was more common than not.

In my family the most recent losses were around 1920 - both my maternal grandparents lost siblings as children. In 1913 my great-grandmother lost her only daughter at 16 months and wanted another daughter so bad (she had two other sons) that when my grandpa was born several years later she refused to name him. :)

I look at my kids today and I can't even imagine the heartbreak. I bet the 1918 flu and events like it were just terrifying.

we should send expertise

There are several doctors from the United States already there trying to figure out why so many in Mexico are dying compared to other countries.

It's not like we are wanting Mexicans to die. It's that we don't want anymore diseases imported to this country that can be prevented.

I want to know how many toddlers died from car accidents yesterday. I betcha, nationwide, it was more than one! So why isn’t the AP (American Pravda) jumping all over that story and wringing their hands?! Kinda makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

It’s a Mexican child. No less a tragedy, but it’s a Mexican’s death on USA soil - it’s more accurately part of the Mexican death toll.

Then we have some common ground. Good. I am not an isolationist however and neither are many conservatives. We are for enforcing our borders and now that this ‘crisis’ is here, we are more than a little frightened for our families. I live in a border state. I know what illegal immigration is costing Texas on a ‘normal day’.

Mexico was already in a ‘state of emergency’ before this happened...now they are streaming into this country carrying a potential pandemic disease and we are suppose to ‘keep our mouths shut’ or be called racists, isolationists, or heartless?

You still owe this thread a sincere apology. You were the one who was posting inflammatory remarks. I still have not seen one post on this thread that was lacking compassion or reason in regards to this issue, other than yours.

Geez! The hype on this non-existent "pandemic" continues. Now WHO says only 9 people dead, not 154. Yet the media keeps hyping this. A month from now this entire story will have disappeared.

Those are deaths that have been specifically confirmed by WHO. The Mexican govt says the 150 number. I'm not panicked, or even concerned, but I'm watching. We should all have a wait and see attitude, and you know what, we all know what the media is like, they breathlessly push stories to fill airtime, so we should all be intelligent enough to filter hype out of the facts. I have actually been grateful for some of the facts, because frankly, if it means that people are going to be more careful about personal hygiene, more careful with their kids' illnesses and exposure, then that's going to do nothing but help stem the spread of whatever potential this thing has.

I think you're right - a month from now this story will probably have disappeared, and Mexico seems to be getting hit harder due to lesser medical care and societal factors (ie third world elements), but in the meantime, it bears watching for the following reasons - it's not flu season, prior to this month the CDC had officially recorded only 12 deaths total from swine flu for the past three YEARS, it seems to be human transmitted (unusual), the mortality rate is higher than usual, it is a new strain for which they have no specific prior knowledge, and WHO has raised their alert level to 4, which they've never done before.

Panic? No way. Watch and wait? Absolutely.

This is from yesterday. There are doctors in Texas calling for the border to be closed until we get a handle on this disease. Should we believe them or Obama and his minions?

FWIW and take this with a grain of salt as this is the Iranian press:

WHO to raise swine flu alert level to 5
Tue, 28 Apr 2009 17:44:29 GMT

Considering the rapidly increasing number of confirmed swine flu cases, WHO officials have decided to raise the pandemic alert level to phase 5.

Swine Influenza (swine flu) caused by type A influenza, regularly leads to influenza outbreaks among pigs. The virus does not normally infect humans.

Confirmed sufferers in the United States and Mexico, however, are believed to have spread the disease to their families and others in close contact.

The alert level was increased to 4 on Monday, and WHO officials now say they will be forced to declare a phase 5 alert soon.

“We’re still awaiting for a final confirmation from the US authorities, but it appears that there’s a number of cases in New York which appear to be human-to-human transmission,” WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl told a news briefing.

The United Nations agency also raised its alert level to 4 on Monday as the virus was detected in several European countries.

Mexican authorities say the new strain has killed up to 149 people in Mexico. About 64 confirmed cases have been reported in five US states.
