Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter will switch his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat and announced today that he will run in 2010 as a Democrat, according to a statement he released this morning.
Specter's decision would give Democrats a 60 seat filibuster proof majority in the Senate assuming Democrat Al Franken is eventually sworn in as the next Senator from Minnesota. (Former Sen. Norm Coleman is appealing Franken's victory in the state Supreme Court.)

Unfortunately, I think he stands a good chance of being re-elected as a Dem. Many “Republicans” switched parties to vote in the presidential primary (I remember upwards of 200,000) and then apparently voted for Obama in the general. The takeaway is that there are simply fewer Republicans in Pennsylvania than there used to be. He would have lost the primary to Toomey because it is closed, but I think he wins the general. JMHO.
If I were in Pennsylvania I would do what ever is needed to bee able to vote in the Democrat primay so I could make sure Specter does not even get the Democrat nomination. Seriously, we need to get such a movement going. This would be a good movement for Sean Hannity to start. If the dems can mess up our primaries and give is Mccain we can do the same to their primaries.
...this isn’t going to change anything. RINOs support all the major Democrat legislation (like amnesty) anyway.
A continuing place at the trough.
1) I suspect he knows this is the only way he gets out of the primary to the general election. 2) Further I suspect a retirement of a Supreme Court Justice is just days away.
I will say that the hard core right has cost us everything. You guys can say stuff like “he voted with the dems anyway” but that just shows how ignorant you are. There is no check on Obama now. Nothing at all. He does whatever he wants and America will never be the same.
And why? Because a the far right of the party decided that it wasn’t enough of a spanking to overwhelmingly lose an election. We need to shrink the party down to conservatives only and kill all the moderates.
That’s right, because what the people of Maine, PA, NJ, MI etc really want is far right conservatives.
Please. Until we realize that to be a majority party we need to a be a big tent that fields moderates and even quasi-liberals where those people play we will be meaningless in the national dialogue. You’ve chased Specter out of the party. Go ahead, chase Collins and Snowe out too.
I’m sure we’ll get those seats back when we nominate Tom Coburn types.
In the meanwhile the democrats will govern unchecked and re-shape this country until it doesn’t even matter who we nominate. Why is the far left smart enough to swallow moderates in conservative states but we’re too stupid to? We deserve Obama and the liberal damage he will do that will likely be permanent. Good for us.
Looks to me like a lot of the Republican “leadership” needs to loose their jobs.
Now he follow in the illustrious footsteps of that Jeffords idiot.
Why? Spector has never ever listened to Republican 'leadership', let him go to where his heart has always been. WE conservatives do NOT need a fraud.
Functionally this changes nothing. He was on their side every time we needed him to filibuster something anyway.
I think we’ll find this to be a productive loss.
INDEED.
Though . . .
It’s the bats in their belfry that are particularly garish.
With a 60 Democrat filibuster proof majority, it is almost like the patient has then been called back and told he has A.I.D.S. to boot. No biggie, country is being given a big wedgie either way. The backlash starts in 2010. Folks, 2010 is LESS THAN NINE MONTHS AWAY!!
At least we’ve gotten rid of one political whore. On to the others.
As did Bush and company some years back.... Oh and the good Samaritan , compassionate conservatism has come back to BITE US time and again.
Even RUSH was 'deceived' by the Spector scam and gave him free advertising time in the Bush era. NOBODOY seems immune from these scoundrels.
Until the leadership is replaced, there is very little chance that things will (or even can) change.
