FreeP this Petition - The E-Cigarette
None - Petition ^ | Open

Good Day to all Freepers. I hope I have chosen the correct options to keep this in the proper topic area.

For about 6 months now, I have been using a device that helps me to reduce my cigarette consumption. Over time, I have gone from 2 1/2 packs of cigarettes per day down to about total 4 cigarettes per day. This device is one a lot of you may have heard about recently in the news, the electronic cigarette (or e-cig). It is also commonly referred to as a "PV" or personal vaporizer.

In recent weeks, the device has attracted the attention of the FDA and other do-gooders who want it banned on the grounds that it is untested.

I will breifly describe the device:

It consists of 3 parts

1- Power source (battery in most cases)

2- an "atomizer" that converts liquid into a vapor <0> 3- A cartridge that contains the liquid containing nicotine (some have no nicotine, most do)

The liquid contained in the cartridge is made of 3 ingredients: Vegetable Glycerin (most commonly used in baking), nicotine of varying strength ( the user chooses how strong or weak to buy the liquid up to a maximum of 34mg/ml), and flavoring.

When the user draws on the device similar to smoking, the battery is activated and charges the "atomizer" that converts the liquid into a vapor and it is inhaled in turn delivering nicotine and simulated smoke. The exhaled vapor is harmless water vapor that has near zero odor (I have yet to find anyone who can smell it at all).

Recently, legislation has been introduced to ban the sale of the devices and the liquid used by classifying the technology as a drug delivery device.

Everyone who uses one of these already knows the benefits and how much better they feel compared to conventional smoking. Nobody here is claiming it is harmless nor will anyone claim it is a smoking cessation device. However, MANY of us are using them to cut down on or totally stop smoking for many reasons including health and taxes.

We all know inhaling anything is risky. But we compare it to smoking and I think the conclusion pretty much speaks for itself. I cannot tell you how excited I am about this after smoking for 30 years, and now I am faced with losing it.

We can make many assumptions and accusations as to why some groups would want them banned, but we prefer to avoid that discussion and attempt to enlist the support of other smokers and anyone else who can think with reason, logic and common sense.

As users of the device, we want studies done just as much as anyone else, but we demand that the politics and lobbying stay hands-off while those studies are done and this very new technology is evaluated for both it's risks and benefits.

I am here asking for support from all Freepers and anyone else those members can bring on board to assist in signing the petition.

I personally consider this a life saving and life changing device. I have newfound freedom from the harassment and degradation of being a smoker.

I really did not want to post this here, but this is a very exciting technology that is in danger of being lost to politics. Who better than Freepers to help us in our fight!

I'm asking with all respect for anyone who has 2 minutes to please visit and fill out the petition. If you want your husband or wife to stop stinking up the house, you really need to look at this.

As a side note, anyone who is interested can read the public community forums and check it out for themselves. Just google "e-cig" and look for the various forums available.

Good luck to you. I missed the hand/mouth and blowing smoke movements of actually smoking. This is a great replacement. You can still get the nicotine. But you also can lesson the amount of nicotine in the e-cig by cutting it with glycerine or buying the liquid in different nicotine strengths.

I really love that I don't smell like an ashtray anymore..or bother anyone else in my home with smoke. I use the 901 mini.

Cost isn't really one of the benefits.

Well, considering that it now costs me more than $100 a week to feed my and my wife's habits, it may be very attractive, cost-wise.

If I got similar results to others, I'd be done spending money on nicotine after a few weeks. Saving over $5,000 a year at this time sounds mighty good to me.

Funky, they are great..glad I found them. The only thing is-they are not quite technologically efficient yet. Hope someday someone can get the atomizer and the liquid delivery system down better. I baby mine and have ordered lots of backup stuff too...just in case Obama’s FDA restricts them.

I missed the hand/mouth and blowing smoke movements of actually smoking. This is a great replacement.

That's been one of the reasons why I never considered patches or gum as replacement therapies. I would want the physical action of smoking too much, and would likely revert to my addiction in no time.

This sounds like just the right therapy for me.

The Dura-C and the DSE 510 are interchangeable. Each comes with 2 batteries, 2 atomizers, a battery charger and 5 filled cartridge - usually with some “tobacco” flavor nic juice. The Dura-C was around 55.00 and the DSE around 45.00. You can also buy extra atomizers or batteries a la carte.

Nic juice can be purchased in many flavors, my personal favorite being apple. You can buy in 10ml quantities for about 9.00, and you can buy in varying amounts of nicotine per ml. Totallywicked e-juice(don’t know the url) sells nic juice in 30ml quantities for 19.99. You can also buy blank cartridges that you fill with the juice yourself. The cartridges are made of a plastic tube filled with polyfil batting. You can save money by purchasing the batting yourself (some people use fish tank filter material) and reusing the cartridges after the batting becomes too used to vape properly.

The problem lies in the fact that the e-cig is starting to pick up steam (or vapor, pardon the pun) in the US. They’ve been around the UK for quite some time. Distributors run out of stock almost as soon as they get it in.

Personally, I find them to be as good as, or better than regular cigs, because I like the flavoring. Plus, even though I’m still getting nicotine, what I’m NOT getting is all the chemicals in the cigarette. Neither is my family.

A positive is, since what you exhale is essentially steam, you aren’t smoking. People are doing it on airplanes, at work, in restaurants, etc.

BTW, I found out about the e-cig here on Freerepublic. If you look back in the forums about the cig tax going up on March 31 (the thread was that date), you’ll find a post to the thread with links. Try www.e-cigarette-forum.com for lots of info and videos.

Hope that helps.

Yes, it's the Nicotine addiction which really in and of itself isn't damaging.

I wrote to "estickusa" last night with a question about their "menthol" strength. It's only listed as Medium on their web site.

They were very prompt to answer that Menthol does come in full strength, so I am going to order this device for Dear Husband tomorrow morning.

I assume it's similiar to the Nicotine gum, which comes in 4 mg or 2mg strength.

I've been at it for nearly 40 years. I've recently learned that my dog is suffering adverse effects from my smoking so I've decided to take it outdoors.
This has seriously cut down my consumption. My dog is going through withdrawal though. He follows me outside to catch a whif.
Do they make a patch for dogs?

Try the most effective stop-smoking device in history...

The easy way. Allen Carr. Saved my life, I hope. I paid $15 for my copy, and it did everything it claimed it would do. Best $15 I ever spent.

"I would definitely sign this petition as I believe that all drugs (not just nicotine) should be legalized and that the government should stay out of our personal lives."

Ever see a friends kid laying on a slab in the morgue? How about your own, Or maybe your brother, sister?

Drugs kill and are a huge cost to society as it is, and you want to see them kill even more, and increase the cost "recreational drug use" has on society? brilliant.

There’s a tax on cigs. There’s no tax on nicotine. There’s the reason why there is a push to outlaw these things.

This isnt’ about quitting. Lots of smokers don’t want to quit. ever. They just want to cut back a little without suffering any withdrawl.

So you cut back a little and whenever you start to feel the urge, you have one of these electric cigarettes. What’s wrong with that?

"There’s a tax on cigs. There’s no tax on nicotine. There’s the reason why there is a push to outlaw these things."

Exactly. The government isn't interested in seeing true addicts quit smoking. The revenue potential on cigarettes has barely begun to be exploited like it has in countries like Canada. The revenue loss now and in the future would be staggering.

I signed the petition for the E-cig.

I never heard of it before and it sounds like a good idea I'll have to check into it.

The only thing that bothered me is at the end they asked me to sign a petition to

"Save the Polar Bears" and to stop Arctic drilling now.

Uhhh ... that would be NO

I have this book and have read it many times. I completely believe in his theories and recommendations. Smoking nothing is the best way, absolutely. Some e-cig smokers even go to no analogs (reg. cigs) and then to not even vaping.

It’s ironic that Mr. Carr died of lung cancer. However, his seminars and his book still holds true. Take the whole addiction thing and turn it backwards. Smokers are trying to get back to the feeling they had when they had never smoked before.

Keep in mind that the petition is hosted my a site that hosts, well.. Petitions. At the end, you were prompted to sign another petition someone else is having hosted there.. the next one in line. And to everyone else, thank you so much for taking the time to sign. Pass this along to as many people who can help us out.

I see a lot of interest here. If anyone has questions, by all means feel free to PM me and I will be more than happy to share information. Be warned: As with anything else, there are some vendors out there making false claims and selling junk. READ before you buy. If you want to skip the reading, I can give a couple of recommendations on reputable vendors who are honest and devices that I know work. Keep in mind that this technology is in it’s infancy and you should expect that it does have it’s own problems. For me, the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

As Freepers, I know I really don’t need to pass on common sense statements, but I want you all to keep in mind that you are dealing with vegetable glycerin that is 100% safe, but it is laced with nicotine, ie: 100% pure poison to children. Get yourself a lock box if you keep this in your home with kids or pets. If I were posting this on DU, I’d have to clamor on about safety since they can’t think for themselves over there, but you all get it.

I didn't want this to turn into a promotional thread, but I guess that is to be expected since this is such an exciting thing for smokers. Most people discourage using any kind of device to inhale nicotine and I do as well. Don’t just pick this up for the fun of it if you aren’t a current smoker. It’s not safe. It’s just WAY safer than smoking tobacco. But if you are in the same position as all the rest of us who are already smokers, this is a way out.

Also pay attention to WHERE you are buying from. Most of these vendors are in China or UK. Be prepared to wait several weeks in some cases if you buy from overseas.

A few years ago I was standing outside my office smoking a cigarette.

Two women were walking towards me as I puffed away.

As they approached, one of them (smoking nazi) said “ Do you know how many chemicals are in that ? “

I looked down at my cigarette...

Paused..

Looked back at her and said;

I’m suprised they’re not more expensive.

Got a great laugh out of her.

Yeah, it’s sad that lung cancer got him, but he almost certainly got an extra decade or two out of life because he quit. Five packs a day and that guy would have been dead possibly before 60. And in those extra decades, he probably saved thousands of lives. Hopefully mine as well.
