The idea of secession gets under the skin of liberals like few other things can. And this is so because secession trumps their power grabs. When someone like Perry says his state has the right to leave the union if the federal government doesnt uphold their end of the bargain, its a stark reminder that the federal government exists by and for the states, not the other way around.
And Perry has been open to the thought of breaking with the union as a last resort for some time now. Just last week, on April 9, he announced his support for Texas House Concurrent Resolution 50 (HCR 50), one of the many Tenth Amendment resolutions currently being passed at the state level...

While I still don’t expect Texas or any other state to secede (or do much of anything to actually oppose the central government), just mentioning things like state sovereignty and secession is something that would be unheard of from a state government official before now. I’m impressed.
It’s fun to talk about but secession is absolutely insane I don’t know why Perry has to go down this road because it’s a dead end. See Civil War.
I remember being at the University of Virginia at the Army JAG school when all of a sudden it dawned on me just how tenuous federalism’s hold on the states is..................
If the federal government continues overstep its authority and betray the American people, then we will have no choice.
I’ve been to Texas before. It’s beautiful and I like it a lot!
I’ve been wondering something, by the way. Texas is home to three of the country’s large airlines (American, Continental and Southwest), as well as two of some of the largest airports in the country (DFW and IAH). How would these three airlines react, if Texas were to secede?
Just because the US Supreme Court ruled in 1969 that it didn’t recognize Texas’ right to secede doesn’t mean Texas can not secede if it doesn’t recognize the Supreme Court!
I disagree. The administration is not about to change course; indeed, it’s proceeding full speed ahead. The congress will support whatever the administration wants to do. There is not a “dime’s worth of difference”, for the most part, between the Democrat Party and the GOP. With nobody to oppose the government gone wild, secession will be the only option for many states.
sorry, 1869
“...because its a dead end. See Civil War....”
And you would expect those of us with real jobs to go to war with Texas to defend the Obamaloon and his social misfits?
Get real.
To succeed at secession you need a strong people, economic and military might.
Perry and others might be better demanding the federal government return to its Constitutional limits.
I already told Dh last night that if Texas suceeded we were selling everything and moving.
It doesn’t *have* to mean Civil War, and I’m sure the liberals would be glad to see Texas go.
That said, given the state of the union and the socialist path that the country is going down, would civil war really be such a bad thing? The South has most of the manufacturing, tech, and design/tech centers now, as well as most of the petroleum and natural gas reserves. Texas itself has nuclear weapons and the means to build more (Pantex). The North has.... um.... Obama?
We've seen plenty of things that would have been thought of insane just a decade ago.
At this point, perhaps secession isn't the way to go, but there may come a point that it will be the best idea. All options should remain open.
I'm proud that Gov. Perry is man enough to acknowledge the RIGHT of Texas to seceded.
Lovely, lovely dream.
Why is it insane. Looks to me like the Feds are now upholding their part of the Constitution by telling States what to do so why should states listen?
Go Gov Perry for telling it like it is!
Strong people: Texans. No more need be said.
Economic might: Texas is the 10th largest economy in the world. Think we have that dealt with.
Military might: We have our own army, navy and air force *separate* from the National Guard or Federal forces. Think we can consider that one dealt with.
We also have regiments of lawyers.
I don’t give a flying crap what was proposed pre civil war or any other nonsense, secessionists are traitors and as was done before the only logical step will be to arrest them, followed by all out military action if necesssary. It’s absolutely insane and I must attribute the discussion of it to a loss of education and lack of knowledge of history on all sides.
