‘Practicing Catholic’ (a liberal who goes to church discusses politics and "mainstream theology")
The New York Times ^ | April 10, 2009 | James Carroll

Why am I a Catholic? There are a thousand ways to answer that question, and this book will take up many of them. By its end, there will be one answer.

-SNIP-

...and in America (continuing racism), with the recognition that hatred of the Other (whether Jews, blacks, or, say, Muslims) is still virulent. Women came to a new self-understanding, from the workforce jolt of World War II to the claustrophobia of the suburbs in the 1950s to the liberation of the 1960s (the birth control pill) and 1970s (Roe v. Wade). Sexual sensibility itself was upended, with gay rights, the loosening of marriage, male insecurity, and the eroticizing of mass culture.

-SNIP-

The most striking instance of this new alliance centered on the U.S. Supreme Court, which had long been a hostile forum to Roman Catholics. Only one of the first fifty-four justices was a Catholic. -SNIP-

...But then, under a succession of conservative Republican presidents, a string of Catholic conservatives was appointed, until, with the naming of Samuel Alito in 2006, the Supreme Court had a Catholic majority for the first time, a majority composed of right-wing Catholics who were poised to reverse precedents on antidiscrimination statutes, conservation, women's rights, free speech, and government intrusions in the private lives of citizens.

But the brand of Catholicism represented by the court majority was out of step with the generally progressive social teachings of the Church (the Catholic justices were not, for example, opposed to the death penalty). Indeed, the court's five Catholics could be seen as holding out not only against the dominant current of contemporary American life but also against a new Catholic mainstream that had been set running in the mid-twentieth century,

Perhaps it is time for the Vatican to create a new creed.

That is, it seems that much of the purpose of the Nicene and Apostles’ creeds was to help standardize the understanding of the faith. What is essential to the faith, and what it means to be one of the faithful.

In changing times, there are many distractions and heterodoxies that infiltrate into the “common knowledge” of the faithful, so it is useful for there to be a concise statement of the truth, that can be used to dispel doubt, and caution those who have strayed.

Composition of a new creed is, of course, exceptionally hard, but the boundaries it provides act as a guide for a restoration of orthodoxy.

He says "only 1 of the first 54 justices" which means "2 of the first 55." He could have put it "one of the first 24" since Roger B. Taney was a Catholic. The second Catholic justice was Edward D. White.

Taney was Chief Justice from 1836 to 1864--so he could have said that of the first 75 years of the Court's existence, the Chief Justice was a Catholic for only 28 of them.

And people wonder why we had the Inquisition.

I wish Tomás de Torquemada were alive today. He’d flush out the wolves in sheep’s clothing.

This was a special Good Friday treat from the New York Times?

Are you suggesting that the Times has it in for the Church?

you are right.

They are trying to hijack the Catholic church like they are doig to the Episcopal church...that allows them to have the churches and schools and hospitals...

If the left can usurp the leadership, they already have a structure in place to spread their ideology to the members of the group. Infiltration.

DING! DING! DING! DING!

No more calls, please, no more calls ..... We have a winner!

Exactly. They want to steal the hard-earned prestige of the target group, e.g. Boy Scouts of America.

The Bible is a living document.

Except for the old, dead bits .... Like Genesis 19.

Some 2/3rds or 3/4's of the front-page editors at The New York Times are either homosexual or bisexual, and not very closeted about it. This according to one of their number, who wrote about it openly (by way of bragging about how much "better" things had become).

No. You’ve got it backwards. Tomas de Torquemada would take one look at the American Catholic community; would shake his head; and then would send a letter to the Pope, suggesting that it was high time to call a crusade.

First a crusade. THEN an inquisition.

And furthermore, try this:
It was not reported last Sunday, however, that three-quarters of the people who decide what appears on the front page of the New York Times are homosexuals, according to Richard Berke, the paper's National Political Correspondent, a longtime member of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association. [Emphasis added.]

Berke spoke at the 10th anniversary reception for the group in Washington, D.C. on April 12, 2000 at the National Press Club, saying:
"This is at a newspaper where not so long ago -- when I started there 15 years ago -- the department heads were asking for lists of the gay reporters on different sections so they could be punished in different ways. So things have really changed at the newspaper. Since I've been there, there's been a dramatic shift. I remember coming and wondering if there were any gay reporters there or whatever. Now it's like, there are times when you look at the front-page meeting and … literally three-quarters of the people deciding what's on the front page are not-so-closeted homosexuals. … [It is] a real far cry from what it was like not so long ago."

According to those words, the decision to start cheerleading for homosexuality began soon after 1984 when Pinch Sulzberger first arrived at the New York offices. Since then he alone has effected a remarkable transition --- in the paper and in the nation --- as a result of his interference in Massachusetts politics, beginning in 1999. He took full charge of the conglomerate in 1997 when he became Chairman.

Link: Cheerleading New York Times.

And then, lest we forget the kind of garbage we're dealing with, coming from The New York Times, there's this:

NYT Bias Example

"Bush Cheered at Fort Benning: FORT BENNING, Ga.--President Bush, surrounded on Thursday by cheering soldiers in camouflage, defended his decision to send 21,500 more U.S. troops to Iraq and cautioned that the buildup will not produce quick results. 'It's going to take awhile,' he said."--headline and lead paragraph, Associated Press, Jan. 11 [2007]

"Bush Speaks and Base Is Subdued: FORT BENNING, Ga., Jan. 11--President Bush came to this Georgia military base looking for a friendly audience to sell his new Iraq strategy. But his lunchtime talk received a restrained response from soldiers who clapped politely but showed little of the wild enthusiasm that they ordinarily shower on the commander in chief."--New York Times, Jan. 12

What about multiculturalism's "other," poor Southern whites?

Which isn't "hate speech," btw, but the right to use the "f-" word and burn the flag.

and government intrusions in the private lives of citizens.

Good to know that this guy is opposed to requiring people to fasten their seat belts.

54% of American Catholics voted for Obama. Someone is not reading or listening to theological facts in those churches.

How many of those 54% go to Mass every Sunday?
The numbers would be different if you took a poll of Church-going Catholics. Granted, there are some bad Churches (and priests) and older people who are just habituated to voting D. Still, I think the numbers would be different.

“I think it’s because organized religions usually have pretty substantial followings. If the left can usurp the leadership, they already have a structure in place to spread their ideology to the members of the group. Infiltration.”

You have just summed up the operating principles of Saul Alinsky’s Industrial Areas Foundation, The CCHD, (Catholic Campaign for Human Development), Maryknoll Missionaries, and a host of “Social Justices” groups and advocates.

They are leftwing activist tapeworms eating the insides of the Catholic church. They include the CCB (Conference of Catholic Bishops), where bishops statements are written by liberals on staff.

They are probably in YOUR parish or diocese too, and may have taken over your rectory. If you have an “Interfaith Alliance” group in your area and catholic churches are a part of it ... you have an infestation.

“54% of American Catholics voted for Obama. Someone is not reading or listening to theological facts in those churches.”

“How many of those 54% go to Mass every Sunday?”

Not many. About 50% of catholics actually are regular church attendees, the other half are cradle catholics. There is a sharp split, and regular mass-attending catholics are far more Republican, but not monolithically so.

The media and Obama’s campaign and EVEN THE CATHOLIC “FAITH CITIZENSHIP” GUIDE did many things to confuse Catholics maximally in order to help Obama.

It’s frightening and disgusting that we have that statistic followed up by Obama’s appointment of a gay-rights radical - to his “faith outreach” committee no less!! - who bashed the Pope, the KofC, and other catholic organizations. This is the moral equivalent of putting a KKK leader on a civil rights panel.

Nothing personal against the Catholic Church. The NYTimes hates any agent of traditional moral values and common decency.

Excellent facts, thanks. It is ashame when mainline Prot. churches also cannot see what real moral conditions are or recognize real evil worldwide.
