Mother Shoots Son, Self At Gun Range

CASSELBERRY, Fla. -- A mother shot and killed her son, and then herself, inside a Casselberry Gun Range Sunday afternoon, according to police.

When Casselberry police arrived at the Shoot Straight Gun Range on South U.S. Highway 17-92 (see map) just after 4:00pm, they found two people had been shot in an apparent murder-suicide.

Police identified the man as 20-year-old Mitchel Moore. The shooter, his mother, was identified as 44-year-old Marie Moore.

Eyewitnesses said the pair was acting strangely and then the woman ran out of the room to get more ammunition. When she returned, eyewitnesses said, she shot her son and then turned the gun on herself.

Eyewitness Jim Copertino was in shooting target practice next to the pair and said the mother and son appeared hyper and jittery, as if they were on drugs.

"I noticed both of them were very anxious with each other. She kept getting very close to him and he was firing. She was almost over his shoulder," Copertino recalled. "She ran out to get more ammo, ran back in and then both were down."

Well, since you know so much, of course you realize he’s most likely talking about Clint Smith, owner of Thunder Ranch and 1911 proponent. Nice movie reference though.

That’s a mighty quick poisoning, isn’t it? You’d be lucky to kill yourself with 15 minutes exposure to a pre-filled garage, let alone filling it and getting enough exposure to be fatal in 15 minutes. She must have driven an SUV....

Really I should have included and exception for a twenty year old in the Armed Services.

Such a twenty year old I would consider a man.

The sister range to this one in the story has Ladies Night one night a week. It is usually very well attended.

I happened to go on a Ladies Night and walked thru the door and into the range area just as a lady in a very tight-fitting tube top started to do the Brass Hop. The range went from 16 people shooting to ‘you could hear a pin drop’ in about two seconds :-)

Her name seems familiar but I didn’t see a photo in the Sentinel of either mother or son.

I go by this range alot too. Ironically, I think it's supposed to close very soon for renovations. They are to extend the current 15M range to 25M.

Even though I don't live far from this one I usually drive all the way to Apopka to shoot there. The staff is much more customer oriented.

Check out my post #15 for his MySpace. There are a few pics of him.

Neither the hot brass dance nor the aversion to taking the brass in the face from the left are chick things.

I’m right handed but left eye dominant. I think I hold the distinction of being the only USAF trainee to ever shut the firing line down, not qualify with the M-16, and still be awarded Honor Graduate from AF basic training.

The M-16 is THE worst about kicking the brass into the face of the lefty shooter. After the instructors noticed my bloodied face (we were well into the session) they finally scrounged up a brass deflector. Of course, they then put us on our stomachs. It was late August. Our sleeves were rolled up. If you think hot brass glancing off your cheek is hot, drop a piece down into the crook of your elbow.

I screamed like a 10 year old school girl having a frog thrown on her. That’s when I flung my arm up to get the brass off me and the range masters shut the world down around me. The one thing that I believe saved me is that, having grown up with guns, I knew to keep the muzzle downrange despite my “injury”.

They secured my weapon and sent me away for medical attention. In 1978, the AF trainee only spent a day on the range. Qualification was not required for my career field so I was not rescheduled.

Naturally, after basic and tech training I was sent to the only type of squadron other than security and special ops that required all its members to be M-16 qualified. I loved that year in RED HORSE in Korea and did qualify while I was there. I still had to shoot a right-handed rifle from the left and I still finished looking like I mopped the barroom floor with my face, but I qualified.

“Husband hates when I do that.”

Hey! My husband hates when I run out to get more ammo too! What is it with husbands? You’d think they’d like having a wife who appreciates a good ammo pile.

Woo Hoo tomorrow we can vote Falk out of office! Rose into office, and maybe even get old Shirley off the WI Sup.Ct! I can’t wait! No snow, I hope Bob Lindmeyer (my fav.) is sufficiently embarrassed for predicting up to 7 inches of snow. Still glad it missed us though. Cheers!

Perhaps the one shooting thread where the usual “needs more range time” response definitely does not apply.

Two things...

We have buckets and buckets of shotgun casings; winter is time to re-pack for the rest of the year. I like a nice rock salt pack myself, for General Household Use...such as getting Husband’s attention when he ain’t listenin’ to me, LOL! ;)

Actually, we host one or two trap shoots out here at our farm each year and husband and his brothers re-pack because they’re CHEAP b@stards. Just shotguns at the trap shoot, but of course everyone has to bring out the ‘fancy firepower’ for Show & Tell.

We have 700 acres around us and one part-time cop in our corner of the county. Life. Is. Good. :)

I’ll be voting after work tomorrow; I have to open the store at 8am...right when the polls open. I might run over at lunch if my boss can spare me for an hour. She hates her Mayor (she lives in Columbus) and can’t wait to vote her out, so I’m pretty sure she will, LOL!

We’re both voting for the same candidates, I’m sure. I received a very, very NICE letter from Nancy Mistele today thanking me for my hard work and cash contributions to her campaign against Falk and reminding me that THIS election WILL be won at the polls! You Go, Girl!

She actually signed it. Or else I did, for her. I forget, LOL!

Next target? Fred Risser. Jeeze, Man! You’re eighty-freakin’-two years old! Didn’t you ever WANT a life other than suckin’ off the Government Teat?

Of course not; he’s a ‘Rat! He’s not qualified for making a living in The Real World. *Rolleyes*

Sorry I live in NJ... we have to sign a release waiver. I just assumed that other states would have similar documents.

Yeah, what is up with Fred Risser? He just can get off the taxpayer dime I guess. Likes the power too. Went and voted first thing this morning. Prayed for all our candidates to have victory. Oh boy, if Falk gets booted out I’m gonna be so so happy! She’ll need to get a real job! No one will be more shocked than her, if she loses. I’d pay to see the look on her face. Rose is such a good gal, really hope she wins. How come Evers is not getting heat about the illegal use of gov’t computers for campaigning? Oh yeah, he’s a demorat. Don’t know a lot about Randy K, but all I’ve heard is good. On to victory!
