Thomas Sowell :: Townhall.com Columnist A Rookie President
Townhall.com ^ | March 31, 2009 | Thomas Sowell

Someone once said that, for every rookie you have on your starting team in the National Football League, you will lose a game. Somewhere, at some time during the season, a rookie will make a mistake that will cost you a game.

We now have a rookie President of the United States and, in the dangerous world we live in, with terrorist nations going nuclear, just one rookie mistake can bring disaster down on this generation and generations yet to come.

Barack Obama is a rookie in a sense that few other Presidents in American history have ever been. It is not just that he has never been President before. He has never had any position of major executive responsibility in any kind of organization where he was personally responsible for the outcome.

I await the inevitable false cries of “racism”.

He shouldn’t even be on the roster!

pssst... Dr Sowell is “black”.

So they’ll have to find some other epithet than “racism” in order to silence truthful critique.

I read this in IBD this morning. Absolutely fantastic, and chilling.

Letting the Iranians get a nuke WILL be a bell “echoing down the halls of history”.

What if it's worse than incompetence?

“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague.”

Sowell is my favorite writer. He has been getting the dart right in the bullseye a lot lately. I admire his skill and insight.

What a pity Helen Clark is off the the UN with a $500,000 tax free salary: if she weren’t, you might be able to fire Obama and hire her instead. She has 9 years experience running a country and, while she is almost red enough to be a communist, she did a competent job and left New Zealand in good financial shape.

At least she was never a Traitor. And she is very politically astute, owes nobody any favors, and knows how to handle foreign leaders — even the difficult ones. She would take no crap from Iran or Russia.

She’s not a “Natural Born” American, but then neither is Obama. And, sad as it sounds, she’d do a much, much better job as America’s first female POTUS than Hillary would have. She out-classes Obama by miles.

Thomas Sowell rarely writes a bad article, but this one is so amazingly perfect and on target I can’t believe it.

Out of the park indeed.

Question: What happens when the owners of the franchise select a rookie for head coach and then give him a four year contract?

Answer: He gets an even bigger head (I know, at this rate you'd think he'd have grown into those ears by now) and demands the General Manager position as well.

But partly due to the fact that there is no Prime Minister or anyone analogous to overthrow and partly due to mixed signals caused by beer spilled on the teleprompter control center, the rookie coach reflexively decapitated the head of GM.

Even his own team mates are unsure whether he knows the difference between 'Manager' and 'Motors' and are less sure how to answer when he says 'General Manager...General of Motors...whatever...just tell how many stars I get to wear now."

But his victory dance is just so entertaining to them:

"Dat's right, I'm bad. I'm da GM of GM baby. Oh yeah!" (pump fist, spin, splits, Lambeau Leap into adoring press box).

So they don't have the heart to tell the rookie emperor that he's got no clothes...and that it gets cold in Green Bay.

This rookie's performance has NOT been good so far:

Softball approach with Iran...swing and miss.

Adherence to campaign pledges regarding lobbyists, openness, etc...really awkward swing and another miss.

Diplomacy with Russia...foul tip at best.

Diplomacy with China...foul into their dugout.

Ability to influence G20...definitely behind in the count.

Management of economy...several ejections and a bench clearing brawl.

I don't know what libs consider a 'winning record'. But it seems to me that BigO is still so full of hate for Bush that he can't even stand to have a 'W' anywhere near his name in the standings.

Worst rookie honeymoon performance...EVER!
