Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Friday that Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. lied to Congress during his confirmation hearings by pretending to be open-minded about his judicial philosophy.
"We got into a little jam with Roberts. Roberts didn't tell us the truth. At least [Justice Samuel A.] Alito told us who he was," Mr. Reid, Nevada Democrat, said, comparing former President George W. Bush's two successful Supreme Court nominees.
"We're stuck with those two young men," Mr. Reid said, though he added that Democrats hope to try to balance out the judiciary overall by "having some moderates in the federal court system as time goes on."
The Senate's top Democrat also vowed never to use the so-called nuclear option to change the rules to prevent filibusters of judicial nominees. Republicans under then-Majority Leader Bill Frist, Tennessee Republican, were poised to employ the tactic in 2004 but were headed off by a bipartisan deal.
"The nuclear option is only one of the things the Republicans in power at that time did or tried to do to ruin our country," Mr. Reid said. "There is no way that I would be part of using the nuclear option. I want every Republican to hear that."
Mr. Reid joined fellow Democrats in voting to filibuster the nomination of Justice Alito, and on final passage voted against confirming Justice Alito and Chief Justice Roberts. The chief justice did not face a Democratic filibuster.
Former Sen. Fred Thompson, a Tennessee Republican who shepherded the chief justice's nomination through the Senate, said Mr. Reid's charge was off base.
"Senator Reid has compiled quite a catalog of mean and irrational statements about various people," Mr. Thompson said.

Consider the source. The vile hatefilled rant against Justice Thomas is simply Reid being Reid. This is simply more of the same.
A lying, dishonest poor excuse for a human being.
Why, Harry, he’s as open-minded as you are.
*Now, fight that, Harry.

Add to that Bawny Fwank’s allegation of homophobia against Scalia.
I have a number of Morman friends here in FL who know all about Reid. Except that they don’t call him “Harry,” they call him “Jack.”
No need to accept the word of a known liar like Reid at all.
Reid's setting us up for a liberal liar disguised as a "moderate", which is, of course, the same thing.
If Reid is “convinced” in his own convoluted mind that Roberts lied, then he will move to impeach him.
Only need 2/3’s (66) for a Senate removal. Now at 59. Add Franken Specter, Snowe, Collins, Lugar, Martinez, Murkowski, Bennett and he’s toast.
Discredit the SCOTUS, that is what is starting to happen. Ginsberg may be gone this year, but replacing her is a one for one affair.
Discredit the court and more “faith in the rule of law” falls from America. Congress or the 0bama Administration usurp more power.
I've long been very uncomfortable with the congressional kangaroo court on the Hill. Calling up oil execs./bankers/energy sector people to “testify.” Testify to what, on what grounds, under what Constitutional Power did or do they have to call for such things? If these people or businesses broke the law...file charges in the courts. Congress has been acting like head investigators, prosecutors, judge, and jury for several years now.
Great line by Thompson. It bears repeating over and over again. Feel free to insert the name of any current Dem leadership.
Worth using on a bumper sticker, too.
Big deal, Reid lied about being a Mormon. If he really followed the LDS Church, wouldn’t he be a Republican?
“We’re stuck with those two young men.”
And, we’re stuck with Mr. Reid.
Exactly. And that makes him a Jack Mormon. As well as a lying sack of horse shiite.
Communist totalitarianism did not die with the Soviet Union.
IMHO
I have noted that ever since Reid took Tom Daschle's place, he has promised (and delivered) all the obstructionism of Daschle, twice the hatred, and half the intelligence. For examples of name calling, he called President Bush a "loser," Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas an "embarrassment," and said that UN Ambassador John Bolton is "abominable, mean, unreasonable and bizarre." My only surprise is that after all that, I expected him to call Chief Justice Roberts a "poo-poo head."
**** you harry... and your whore mother... you rat bastard!

Being majority leader in the Senate can he not be called out for making remarks against someone who holds a leadership position in another branch of government.
Surely there is some form of censure that it applicable or is this a case where freedom of speech means he can anything he likes about a fellow public servant.
The film “Casino”, based on the life, love, and leisure of Las Vegas casino executive and mob-connected sports handicapper Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, had Dick Smothers’ portray, the Senator, who was partly based on Nevada Senator Harry Reid, who was chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission. The scene in which the lead character is denied a license by the Nevada Gaming Commission is based on a December 1978 hearing when Harry Reid was the commission’s chairman; some of Reid’s statements are used in Smothers’ dialogue. Basically it showed the Senator lying his @ss off. (FR’s Cripplehawk, October 2008)
Too may commas and apostophes in my last - apologies to any repelled punctuation-purists.
JUST STFU REID. I SO DAMN SICK OF YOU.
