The Dirty Little Secret Is Out: Religious Faith and Evolution Are Incompatible
ICR ^ | March 20, 2009 | Frank Sherwin, M.A.

Posted on 03/20/2009 7:59:40 PM PDT by GodGunsGuts

In a recent book review, Jerry Coyne, professor of ecology and evolution at the University of Chicago, admitted that the secular worldview of macroevolution (the development of complex life from “simpler” forms) is at odds with Christian faith...

snip..As seems to be the case with Feuerbach’s theory of religion as psychological projection, which begins with the presupposition that God is “not real,” just an illusion “in our minds” produced by own own existential anxieties

Spirited: Feurbach’s psychological projection theory is based on poor reasoning and false assumptions. First, it’s evident that Feuerbach has anthropomorphized ‘anxieties’ by way of endowing the ‘anxiety-entity’ with ineffable power to create illusions in the minds of men. In this view, which is naturalism (materialism/pantheism), man lacks free will and is therefore helpless before the unseen forces of nature. In this particular instance, the unseen realm has caused man to imagine a god-—a spirit.

Second, as CS Lewis astutely pointed out, before man can imagine something, he must first know something. He cannot, as Feuerbach implies, simply imagine something (God) without first knowing something about God. For example, even though man knows quite a lot about color, and due to this knowledge can imagine the possibility of a fourth or even a dozen more primary colors, he cannot actually form in his mind an image of a fourth primary color let alone a dozen more.

Now if, as Feurbach implies, man’s imagination is infinite, therefore capable of imagining a spiritual entity without first knowing something about spiritual entities, then it ought to be easy to not only imagine a fourth primary color but to actually see its’ color in one’s mind.

Wouldn’t any science which conflicts with the Bible be incompatible with religious faith? Not just evolution?

[ I should also note, at the risk of sounding mystical, that a common testimony of those who have spiritually meaningful dreams or visions is that time is the moment, i.e. the Eternal Now. ]

I'm of that number.. all we seem to have is the moment.. When there gets here it is still just the moment.. As Jesus implied in several places.. Deal with the moment and the past and future will take care of themselves.. Quite an abbreviated lesson in the study TIME.. timelessness... and timing..

I should also note, at the risk of sounding mystical, that a common testimony of those who have spiritually meaningful dreams or visions is that time is the moment, i.e. the Eternal Now.

Indeed. Though it might seem "mystical" to say it, anyone who engages in meditation might discover that the experience of "serial time" can virtually disappear altogether. It turns out that a meditation, if measured "by the clock" after the fact, might actually have taken hours to complete. But to the meditator, it may seem as if only an instant has passed. Or people who have had visionary experiences might report that "serial time" at the very least can behave very oddly, if the sense of it does not disappear altogether, for the duration. Truly, the "sense of timelessness surpasses their sense of time passing."

These are very strange phenomena, and extremely difficult to describe in ordinary language — probably because we don't know what to make of the "time problem" that often becomes evident with such experiences.

Yet such experiences truly do give one an awareness of "timelessness while yet in the flesh" — just as you say, dearest sister in Christ!

Thank you ever so much for our outstanding essay-post!

Unless of course he doesn’t have the spine for just coming right out and saying what’s on his mind, under his own name.

So are you saying that Catholics aren’t Christians?

It’s a rhetorical question so don’t bother answering. Heh.

Jesus did NOT say that we had to follow all of the laws in Leviticus. Jesus made clear that the OT deserved respect. Jesus did NOT say that Christians had to live exactly as the Jews had lived, before us.
(As a Catholic, your post does put a smile on my face, as the Jewish temples that Jesus entered all had volumes of Maccabees and other books that all Bibles contained, for roughly 1,100 years, from the first Bible to the King James version.)

Besides, using YOUR logic:

For roughly 300 years after the first Easter, there was NO Bible at all.

For nearly 10 years, after the first Easter, there is NO record that ANYONE wrote down ANYTHING about Jesus.

Until the printing press was invented, Bibles were priceless works of art and were very rare, hand made treasures.

Throughout the recorded history of Christianity, most Christians have been illiterate until the last few hundred years or so.

The idea that Genesis, written roughly 4000 years ago, was intended as a scientific or historical journal is absurd. Genesis is nothing more than the written version of an oral tradition which tried to explain that God created the World, as we know it.

You are asking God to explain the divine, to illiterate people, as well as asking God to explain complex scientific and historical issues, to people, in a Book that was not intended for that purpose.

“Do not put the Lord, your God, to the test.”

I say Faith alone, Scripture alone, Christ alone.

You say something else. That is fine.

You slander God’s written word. You can assert Scripture + Tradition without doing that.

You well should know that many NT texts were written much sooner than you say.

Jesus’s believing (and AUTHORING) the OT is a totally different issue from continuing OT ceremonial laws, which are all fulfilled in Him - which you should know, unless you are an unschooled ass, as you appear to be.
