Wake (Co. NC) judge orders home schoolers into public classrooms

Raleigh, N.C. — A judge in Wake County said three Raleigh children need switch from home school to public school. Judge Ned Mangum is presiding over divorce proceeding of the children's parents, Thomas and Venessa Mills.

Venessa Mills was in the fourth year of home schooling her children who are 10, 11 and 12 years old. They have tested two years above their grade levels, she said.

Her lessons also have a religious slant, which the judge said was the root of the problem.

"How do you split the baby?"

Well, this is the $64,000 question. And don't get me wrong, I think most local judges are morons so I wouldn't necessarily expect wise decisions.

But the fact that public school is a default schooling decision is obvious. So if the parents disagree, then the judge decides.

"Splitting the baby" might mean home-schooling 2 and sending one to the local PS. But this is idiotic and is no different than divorce decrees in the past that award custody of one child to the father and one to the mother.

The husband is probably trying to "stick it" to his wife. He knows the advantage of homeschooling and can see it in his kids. But he might be envious of the additional connection with the kids, and perhaps the time in intimate prayer, that he loses out on now that they're separated and Mom has them from 8 to 3 PM.

The problem here is the sin of divorce, not the judge's decision.

That’s correct. What I see here is the father having some say in how his children are educated. And he should have a say.

This is not as clear cut as it seems. The father obviously wanted his kids to have other influences in their lives than the mother who he is divorcing. It is not so much about home school or public school. It is not even about religious or not religious. It is about the parents not agreeing and the public school being the default choice

“The dad is being awful proobably just to harass the wife.”

The key word in your statement is “proobably”. (I know it’s a typo.) It could be that the wife is a nut job.

With that being said, I believe strongly in home schooling and know public schools are a disgrace. I also believe the dad has rights, too.

Add the governor is stealing the lottery money for education to use for other projects.

Well, yes... it’s a logical conclusion from their worldview.

After all, the KNOW BETTER because they have more modern, current information than the people who wrote and ratified the Constitution.

The problem here is the sin of divorce, not the judge’s decision. Absolutely correct. God hates divorce and one has only to observe the results it has on children to understand why.

Judges, liers and politicians give me a pain in the buttox. NC. They think they know more than the little people. Toss them out on their can.

There are a few facts missing from the article.

He said Venessa Mills decided to home school after getting involved with Sound Doctrine church "where all children are home schooled."

They both attended Sound Doctrine church, but after Thomas Mills' adulterous affair (which he admitted to in court) the church shunned him. He later claimed in court that the church was cult. (Could it be that his insistence on public school was less about whats good for the children and more about revenge to the mother and church?)

Also even though Mr. Mills makes $9,400 per month, the judge required him to make the lowest monthly child support payment the law would allow, $1,383.75. That figure is only $300 more than the mortgage payment of the Mills home which the judge ordered that Mrs. Mills must pay. If she does not pay the mortgage payment Mr. Mills can pay it and deduct the amount from his child support payment. Even if Mrs. Mills chooses not to live in the home! (This is a very unusual ruling indeed.)

That leaves her with $300 to feed and cloth the children for an entire month, but insures that he will not face any financial repercussions from loosing the home. It also insures that she must get a job to support the children and that would leave no time for homeschooling.

Also the judge ruled that Mr. Mills could continue living in the home until the divorce was final even though he continues his adulterous affair.

The entire ruling has too many strange things in it to not think that the judge is trying to punish her and reward him. Note that in North Carolina by the way the laws are designed the adulterous spouse usually ends up with the short end of the stick.

Looking through the comments section in the WRAL link, it appears that the divorce was due to the husband's infidelity. So there appears that not all the "facts" are on the table. Just sayin'....

They need a mediator, someone who can help them come to a good solution, one that is best for their children. I just don’t happen to think that WCPS system is the best option.

You’re right. There are some very screwy things about this matter. And I guessed before seeing your details that the fellow was trying to stick it to his ex-wife. He probably joined the church reluctantly, at her urging.

The father has rights, too.

The “father” proved his concern for the children when he bedded some slut.

These judges need to be recalled if elected and houded until they quit otherwise. drag the family name through the mud for years if that is what it takes.
Use the dems playbook right back at them, only more of it.
