Obama: Troop move to Mexican border under consideration

WASHINGTON — President Obama weighed in Wednesday on the escalating drug war on the U.S.-Mexico border, saying that he was looking at possibly deploying National Guard troops to contain the violence but ruled out any immediate military move.

"We're going to examine whether and if National Guard deployments would make sense and under what circumstances they would make sense," Obama said during an interview with journalists for regional papers, including a McClatchy reporter.

"I don't have a particular tipping point in mind," he said. "I think it's unacceptable if you've got drug gangs crossing our borders and killing U.S. citizens."

My bet is that Pot is gonna get fast tracked to legalization, and ironically that will take some of the pressure off the border. Pot is so bloody cheap to grow, the profit margins on it are huge. If it gets legalized, and regulated (taxed to hell and back I would imagine), it will make the US market a lot less attractive. And get the bastards out of our National Forests.

But I don’t know, I have not seen a single sane thing come out of Obama’s White House yet, impossible to predict what is going to happen.

Other than MUCH higher taxes that is.

Your friends definitely should have skipped their scuba trip or booked it elsewhere. My family was discussing doing a cruise to the Mexican riviera and decided against it because of safety concerns.

Hopefully they return home safely and consider a different destination next year.

This act explicitly prohibits the military or any other such unit (like the National Guard) under federal control from acting in a law enforcement capacity within the United States.

Here is a little history on that "Act"...

I don’t care what Bush would do. The war on drugs has been a failure since the beginning. Instead of militarizing, the best solution is to let the states legalize it if the wish and stop pressuring the Mexicans if they try to legalize it.

The idea of troops on the southern border has been ongoing for a couple of decades! Most politics is too slow, but commonsense politics is even slower to nonexistent!

This is reserved for the states and states alone

Yes, and because illegal immigration enforcement is the job of the federal government, the states hands are tied.

Not according to the 10th amendment, but tied never the less.

Yes, it is a convoluted mess. But, what is of concern is the potential ease with which the military would be at the disposal of the CIC. I know it is a stretch to think that the military would take arms against the citizenry but, the founding fathers provided for the protection of the people from the government.

Dictatorial regimes in history have been able to accelerate their agendas once those military were positioned along with those dictators. I'm just saying....

My family was discussing doing a cruise to the Mexican riviera and decided against it because of safety concerns.

The San Antonio Express-News had a column, a few days ago, by a columnist of Mexican descent. A very elderly relative died in Mexico, but no one from his family attended the funeral. They were concerned about their safety in traveling to and from the small town in the interior where the funeral took place. Instead, they held a wake in El Paso.

I have a friend (also of Mexican descent) who works for an import-export company in the border town of Laredo. Part of his job is meeting with Mexican businessmen, who fly into Nueva Laredo, on the Mexican side of the border.

A few years ago, he would make an excursion of the trip across the border to pick up a client. Maybe do a little shopping. Wine and dine the client in Nueva Laredo. Now days, he says he fills his car with gas before he leaves, and the only stop he makes in Mexico is at the airport, either picking up, and dropping off, the client.

Unacceptable? How about a Clear and Present Danger, Mr. President?

“Sending a lot of our troops near a volatile border with so many sketchy gun holders on the other side is tossing matches at the truck of fireworks...it wouldn’t be as dangerous to send troops today...”

It’s MORE dangerous to do NOTHING and leave AMERICAN CIVILIANS at the mercy of a foreign ARMY.

This is what the military is for - TO DEFEND THE COUNTRY AND ITS CITIZENS FROM INVASION.

Sending troops to secure the border is EXACTLY what needs to be done, and if a shooting war starts, it will ONLY be because the Mexicans refuse to recognize our border.

Real simple solution for it - You tell the Mexicans - stay the F**k in your own country, and nobody dies. You cross my border with dope and armed gangs to harm MY people, you get shot dead like a rabid animal. Period.

This is a National Security issue, plain and simple.

Sure he does. Just not for law enforcement. But for national defense, from a foreign threat, he can deploy the military within the USA all day long.

Obama, of course, is actually creating his own army.

...the founding fathers provided for the protection of the people from the government

The PTB are getting close to invoking that rule from the citizens.

It's written quite well, and the government has to emasculate and disarm the citizenry before that happens.

It's kinda a race.

I call it what it is, the Mexican have an open insurgent criminal rebellion on their hands. It is located directly on our border and is a clear threat to Americans on this side. Nothing in the constitution that i can see prevents our military forces being deployed in a defensive posture along the national border.

We deploy Naval and Air Forces for other threats at the border, and dont just assume every incursion is handled with a fine from the FAA or a visit from a customs agent.

Where does all this talk of using the military come into play when it comes to Obama? I think Bambi should take his teleprompter and go to all the border towns personally and “talk” with the cartelees. I'm sure they'd listen and it would save us all a lot of worry.;) Isn't that his policy in dealing with these types? Reason with them 0, and they'll listen and change their behavior....yeah.
