WASHINGTON, March 6, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - President Barack Obama plans to rescind the Bush policy limiting federal funding for embryo destructive research on Monday. The Bush policy had allowed federal funding for experiments on already existing lines of embryos, but forbade the funds from being used to create new embryos for experimentation.
According to news reports, a signing ceremony will take place on Monday at 11 am. Details about the Executive Order are not available, but according to the Washington Post, "proponents expect Obama will simply lift the restriction without caveats and let the NIH work out the details."
Tony Perkins, President of Family Research Council commented on the news, saying, "Today's news that President Obama will open the door to direct taxpayer funds for embryonic stem cell research that encourages the destruction of human embryos is a slap in the face to Americans who believe in the dignity of all human life."
Perkins added: "I believe it is unethical to use human life, even young embryonic life, to advance science. While such research is unfortunately legal, taxpayers should not have to foot the bill for experiments that require the destruction of human life."
The Family Research Council leader pointed out that "Obama's policy change is especially troubling given the significant adult stem cell advances that are being used to treat patients now without harming or destroying human embryos."
He concluded, "Despite the significant advances using adult stem cells to treat patients, and new techniques to create stem cells from any patient, President Obama will choose to direct taxpayer's money to experiments that represent the poorest stem cell science.
Just this week ten pro-life Members of Congress spoke on stem cell research during a Special Order organized by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ). Smith and the other pro-life Congressman observed that embryonic stem-cell research is not only unethical, but unnecessary, given the superior results achieved through adult stem cell research.
"Human embryo-destroying stem cell research is not only unethical, unworkable and unreliable, it is now demonstrably unnecessary," said Smith. "Adult stem cells ... are truly remarkable. They work, they have no ethical baggage, and advances are made every day at a dizzying pace.
But despite so much progress in the adult stem cell field, "the Obama administration and the House and Senate Democratic leadership remain obsessed with killing human embryos for experimentation at taxpayer expense," said Smith.

Wasn’t the original ban bu Bush done by “executive edict”? There was never a Congressional vote on it.
How many states have begun to pass a Constitutional amendment to protect human life? I haven’t seen the amendment come up for a vote in my state yet, but I live in NJ, and it would probably never pass. How many states have banned abortion completely? South Dakota?
You should immediately contact your Representative to see what you can do to get your state to pass the Human Life amendment. It sounds like it would be a really basic way to get the Amendment passed for the Federal Constitution.
We need a federal constitutional amendment. Killing Americans (or harvesting fetuses) in California won’t keep your tax dollars from going there just because you live in North Dakota or Florida or...
And to think that LBJ was called a “baby killer” in his day.

While the Americans with Disabilities Act says you cannot discriminate against those with birth defects, there are those “charities” and PACs that push for prenatal testing to determine with a baby should be aborted because of the “risk” of a birth defect. They call it a “quality of life” issue. You need only look at the rhetoric that said Sarah Palin was guilty of child abuse for giving birth to Trig.
“My husband has Parkinson’s, and we have discussed the use of embryonic stems cells.
He has decided that he will refuse any treatment that might come from a murdered embryo. I support his decision.”

But why aren't there enough embryos for testing? How many embryos (human beings) are produced by fertility clinics, and how many of those will ever be implanted in a womb? I have heard that it is standard practice to produce 6 to 14 embryos per patient, and emplant maybe 2 or 3. The rest get frozen, or maybe some are discarded immediately and some frozen. About a quarter of those frozen will not survive freezing and thawing, and since the surplus of frozen embryos made by this process is over a hundred thousand, there are no takers for the majority of them, anyway.
I think we should ban fertility clinics from creating life that will be discarded. Implant all embryos immediately in a womb, or don't make them!
Where will the embryos come from for medical procedures (not just experimentation but hospital use) if this pans out?
We shouldn’t be using embryos except for immediate implantation in a womb, and we shouldn’t allow them to be frozen, period. If it is human life, a 25% mortality rate right off the bat, and a dubious fate for the remainder, is not acceptable!

He is a wonderful man, and he is strong. Death comes to us all, and the best we can hope for is that it comes with dignity.
To live a few years longer because one has taken another life is disgusting, and gives death a value it does not deserve. Death should not be given this power.
We live and die, so be it. Let us do it with grace and faith, not shamelessly killing future life. How despicable can we be?
I know a family with a son with Down syndrome. It has been difficult at times and heartbreaking at others, but they wouldn’t change having him as their child for anything. They recently got to watch him address an auditorium full of people as he received an award he had earned. I guess these people would have denied him and them that experience.
